Chelsea took early command through two early goals in Seville from Tore André Flo, and although Alfonso Pérez narrowed the gap, Chelsea won 2-1. However, that lead was cancelled out at Stamford Bridge when Finidi George levelled the tie on 20 minutes. Chelsea FC have made a cautious start to their campaign with a 1-0 home win against RSC Anderlecht, followed by a scoreless draw at Anfield against holders Liverpool FC. But they will be aware of the improvement of newcomers Real Betis Balompié, who overcame opening-day nerves in a 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool, to win at Anderlecht to keep the group wide open.

Previous meeting • Betis had previously only met one English club in UEFA club competition before their fixture against Liverpool last month, and that tie took place against Chelsea in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals.

• Chelsea took early command through two early goals in Seville from Tore André Flo, and although Alfonso Pérez narrowed the gap, Chelsea won 2-1. However, that lead was cancelled out at Stamford Bridge when Finidi George levelled the tie on 20 minutes.

Frank Sinclair restored Chelsea's advantage in the tie and second-half goals from Roberto Di Matteo and Gianfranco Zola ensured a 5-2 aggregate win. Chelsea also hope for a repeat this season, for after previously beating Betis, they went on to collect the trophy.

Classic meeting with Barcelona • Chelsea find themselves playing Spanish opposition shortly after a superb encounter with FC Barcelona in last season's Round of 16. Barcelona won at home with second-half goals from Maximiliano López and Samuel Eto'o, after Juliano Belletti's own goal had put Chelsea in front.

But in the return, Chelsea prevailed. Eidur Gudjohnsen, Frank Lampard and Damien Duff opened up a 3-0 lead after 19 minutes, only for Ronaldinho to claw back two goals before half-time. But John Terry claimed the winner to erase memories of Chelsea's defeat by Barcelona five years earlier.

Previous Barça meeting • In the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals Chelsea won 3-1 at home but were eliminated after losing 5-1 at Barcelona.

Unbeaten at home • Chelsea are unbeaten at Stamford Bridge against Spanish clubs in UEFA competition with four wins and a 1-1 draw against RCD Mallorca in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals, which was followed by 1-0 away defeat. The goals difference in the home matches is 14-6.

Chelsea winning the replay 2-1 after a 1-1 draw. They then met in the 1998 UEFA Super Cup, with Chelsea winning 1-0.

• Meanwhile, Betis are unbeaten away from home in their first UEFA Champions League season. A 2-2 draw in the third qualifying round at AS Monaco FC took the Spanish club to the group stage where they won 1-0 at Anderlecht in their opening away game.

Chelsea key facts • Chelsea are competing in their third successive UEFA Champions League campaign having reached the semi-final stage in each of the past two seasons.

• In the 2003/04 campaign, AS Monaco FC denied the London club a place in the final as Chelsea first lost 3-1 in the Principality against a team that played the vast majority of the second half with ten men following Akis Zikos’ dismissal after 53 minutes. By then, the match was delicately poised as Dado Pršo had given Monaco the lead after 17 minutes only for Hernán Crespo to equalise five minutes later. Although Chelsea were then expected to make their numeric advantage count, it was Monaco who scored two goals in the last 12 minutes through Fernando Morientes (78) and Shabani Nonda (83). It took Chelsea 44 minutes of the return leg to rectify the situation thanks to goals from Jesper Gronkjær (22) and Frank Lampard (44), but once more the English side failed to capitalise as Monaco grabbed a goal in first half added time through Hugo Ibarra before Morientes equalised on the hour mark.

• Then, last season, Chelsea again came up short, on this occasion against the eventual winners, Liverpool FC. The two sides shared a tense scoreless draw at Stamford Bridge in the opening leg before Liverpool made home advantage pay with a fourth-minute goal from Luis García that proved enough to book their place in the final.

• Overall, this is Chelsea’s fourth time in the competition, and to date, every appearance has resulted in qualification for the knockout stages.

• To date, Chelsea have played 40 matches in the competition, winning 50 per cent of them with ten draws and ten defeats. Sixty goals have been scored in that time with 37 conceded.

• Chelsea won the English Premiership for the first time by 12 points from Arsenal FC with Manchester United FC a further six points behind in third place.

• With an automatic entry into the UEFA Champions League group stages guaranteed, Chelsea opened their season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against RSC Anderlecht at Stamford Bridge with Frank Lampard on target after 19 minutes.

• The Londoners locked horns with Liverpool once more on Matchday 2, and took away a scoreless draw from Anfield.

• Chelsea have won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup on two occasions. Their first victory

came at the end of the 1970/71 season where they defeated Real Madrid CF 2-1 in a final replay in Athens after the sides had shared a 1-1 draw two days before. Peter Osgood had put Chelsea ahead after 56 minutes in the first match only for Madrid to level in the last minute through Ignacio Zoco. But Chelsea got the upper hand in the replay as goals from John Dempsey (31) and Osgood (39) provided them with an interval lead that Madrid were unable to overcome, although they halved the deficit with 15 minutes to go through Sebastián Fleitas.

• Chelsea won the competition 17 years later when overcoming VfB Stuttgart 1-0 thanks to Gianfranco Zola’s 70th-minute goal at Stockholm’s Råsunda stadium.

• In the Premiership on Saturday, Chelsea's 5-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers FC was their ninth successive league win, a new club record.

• Chelsea have scored 23 goals in their first nine league fixtures. At the same point last season they had scored just eight times.

• With his two goals against Bolton, Frank Lampard now has eight for the season from eleven games in all competitions. He is the club's top scorer ahead of Didier Drogba, who has five.

• Lampard has now made 155 consecutive FA Premiership appearances, just five short of England goalkeeper David James' record. He is scheduled to break the record on 3 December, when Middlesbrough FC visit Stamford Bridge.

• Having been introduced as a substitute against Bolton, Carlton Cole got just his second taste of Premiership action for Chelsea since May 2003. He spent the last two seasons on loan at Charlton Athletic FC and Aston Villa FC.

• Defender William Gallas has played in every position across the back four this season. The Frenchman started in his preferred role at centre-back, before shifting over to the left to cover for the injured Asier Del Horno. More recently, he has been preferred to Paulo Ferreira at right-back.

• Winger Damien Duff has undergone surgery to repair damaged cartilage in his knee following the Republic of Ireland’s defeat of Cyprus in recent FIFA World Cup action. The Irish international is expected back in around four weeks.

• Chelsea have four players on the shortlist for FIFA World Player of the Year. Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard and Arjen Robben are all up for the award, which is presented on 19 December.

• Chelsea players from nine different nations are in contention for a place at the FIFA World Cup. Michael Essien of Ghana and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba were instrumental in helping their nations qualify for the first time, while the club also boast players from the more established countries of England, Portugal, Germany, France and Argentina.

• Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Čech and Spain leftback Asier Del Horno will have to

negotiate a twolegged playoff if they are to also reach the finals in Germany next summer.

• While his players were away on international duty, José Mourinho went on holiday with his family to Disneyland Paris. "My kids loved it, so did my wife and I," he said. "Armageddon was fantastic  water, fire, bouncing around, wheeeee! I felt like Bruce Willis."

Betis key facts • Since the start of the UEFA Champions League in the 1992/93 season, Real Betis Balompié’s participation in UEFA club competition has involved three seasons in the UEFA Cup and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup campaign.

• Their best performance in that spell came with qualification to the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners’ Cup as their exploits in the UEFA Cup each season ended at the third round stage.

• In the quarterfinals of the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, Betis overcame Budapesti VSC and FC København before losing 52 on aggregate to the eventual winners of the competition, Chelsea.

• To date, Betis have played 38 matches in UEFA club competition winning 21, drawing six and losing eleven with 53 goals scored against 36 conceded.

• Betis finished fourth in last season's Spanish Primera División, 22 points behind champions FC Barcelona. Betis trailed secondplaced Real Madrid CF and thirdplaced Villarreal CF by 18 and three points respectively.

• Nevertheless, the third qualifying round beckoned with AS Monaco FC providing the opposition. Betis defeated the 2003/04 finalists at the Manuel Ruíz de Lopera stadium thanks to Edu’s 90thminute goal and though they took the lead in the return leg at Stade Louis II through Ricardo Oliveira’s 17thminute strike, Monaco proved stubborn opponents until the end. The home side levelled on the night through Gerard López after 33 minutes before Toifilou Maoulida put them ahead after 63 minutes. In search of a third goal to advance to the group stage, Monaco were punished by a fantastic second goal from Oliveira after 77 minutes.

• Competing in the UEFA Champions League is already tough, but having your first match against the defending champions, Liverpool FC, provided additional spice to the contest especially given the English side’s Spanish links through manager Rafael Benítez and a number of his playing staff. Liverpool played like defending champions as they raced to a twogoal lead in Seville inside 14 minutes through Florent SinamaPongolle (2) and Luis García (14). Although Arzu reduced arrears six minutes into the second half, Liverpool held on for a valuable win.

• But Betis did not have to wait long for their first victory in the group stage as Oliveira scored the only goal of the game after 69 minutes away to RSC Anderlecht at the Constant Vanden Stock stadium in Brussels.

• Prior to qualification to the UEFA Champions League group stage, Betis’ best performances in Europe were two appearances in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup quarterfinals. The first occasion came in the 1977/78 season when FC Dinamo Moskva prevailed 30 on aggregate while 20 years later it was Chelsea’s turn to deny the Spanish side, once more by a threegoal margin, but this time 52 on aggregate.

• Current Spain coach Luis Aragonés was in charge when Betis and Chelsea last met in UEFA club competition.

• Betis’ biggest European win came in the UEFA Cup on 29 September 1998, when Danish visitors Velje BK were beaten 50. Iván Pérez grabbed a hattrick, the first and, to date, only Betis player to do so in UEFA club competition.

• Alfonso Pérez remains the club’s top scorer in UEFA club competition with eight goals.

• Betis have collected three pieces of domestic silverware – the Primera División title in 1934/35 and two Copa del Rey victories from the 1976/77 and 2004/05 seasons.

• The club has several nicknames including Los Verdiblancos (the green and whites), Los Heliopolitanos and Los Trianeros.

• Current coach Llorenç Serra Ferrer is the longest serving manager with 167 league games under his belt from two spells. Prior to his return in 2004, he spent four seasons with Betis from 1993/94 until 1996/97 winning promotion to the Primera División in his first season in charge.

• Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, after whom the club’s stadium is named, has been club chairman for 13 seasons.

• Juanito Gutiérrez has already met half of his goal tally from last season. The centreback has found the net twice – both headers against Real Sociedad de Fútbol and FC Barcelona.

• Ricardo Oliveira tops the club's domestic scoring table with three strikes following two penalties against Getafe CF and CA Osasuna while he also scored against RC Deportivo La Coruña.

• Right winger Joaquín Sánchez missed Sunday’s league meeting with Getafe CF due to a throat infection – it was the first match he has missed since 9 November 2003. The Spain international had clocked up 71 successive matches with the Verdiblancos.

• Midfielder Juanlu entered Serra Ferrer’s weekend plans for the first time this season against Getafe.

• Centreback Nano played his first game against former club Getafe on Sunday.

José Mourinho

Llorenç Serra Ferrer

Head coach profiles

Tactically astute and a superb motivator, José Mourinho has rapidly emerged to carve a reputation as the best and most scientific young coach in Europe. In 2005 he was declared a high officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique by Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio. The Order is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Portuguese citizen, recognising his achievements as manager of FC Porto and Chelsea FC.

Born in 1963, Mourinho started his working life as a teacher before being lured into football by Sir Bobby Robson as part of his staff at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona. After a brief nine-game spell at SL Benfica and a highly successful tenure at UD Leiria he became Porto coach in January 2002 and immediately transformed the club's fortunes. In his first full season at the Estádio das Antas, 2002/03, he won the UEFA Cup and a domestic double. The next year Porto retained their league title and sensationally scooped the UEFA Champions League by defeating AS Monaco FC 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

Identified by Chelsea as the man to replace Claudio Ranieri, Mourinho moved to Stamford Bridge on 2 June 2004 and went on to mastermind the club's first domestic title in 50 years with a record points total and just one Premiership loss, adding the League Cup with a final victory against Liverpool FC. The Portuguese agreed a new five-year contract in May 2005.

Llorenç Serra Ferrer played for various clubs on his home island, Mallorca, before taking over as coach of regional side UD Poblense, gaining promotion to the Segunda División B during his five-year tenure. During his first season in charge of RCD Mallorca's reserves in 1984/85, he was called on to help an ailing first team, then struggling in the middle order of the top flight, although he was unable to steer the team clear of relegation following his appointment at Christmas.

He was back in charge the following season, restoring the team's Primera División status within 12 months. Mallorca under Ferrer spent the following seven seasons oscillating between Spain's top two divisions until Real Betis Balompié asked him to help their promotion push in 1993/4. Taking over while the team was in mid-table, a late rally saw them finish Segunda División runners-up. Ferrer remained for the next three years and took the team to the 1997 Copa del Rey final and an extra-time defeat against FC Barcelona.

He replaced Louis van Gaal as Barça coach in summer 2000, but had been dismissed by the following April. Following a period of inactivity, he accepted another opportunity to coach Betis and rewarded their faith by winning the Copa del Rey in 2005 and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

Betis back in business(Sunday, 16 October 2005)

Domestic news

All four Group G teams secured league wins at the weekend, with Chelsea FC providing fireworks in a 5-1 victory against Bolton Wanderers FC. Fans of Liverpool FC, RSC Anderlecht and Real Betis Balompié had to sweat, as all three teams prevailed by a single goal to nil.

Liverpool FC 1-0 Blackburn Rovers FC

The European champions claimed only their second Premiership win of the season, in their seventh outing, against opponents reduced to ten men from the 33rd minute. In the end, it took a 75th-minute strike from Djibril Cissé, after Xabi Alonso had touched a free-kick to him, to save the day at Anfield. The recalled Cissé had hitherto endured a frustrating afternoon up front alongside Peter Crouch.

The Liverpool side showed five changes from the 4-1 league defeat by Chelsea on 2 October. Josemi, Stephen Warnock, Mohamed Sissoko, Boudewijn Zenden and Cissé all returned, with Steven Gerrard, who has a shin injury, Sami Hyypiä, Dietmar Hamann, John Arne Riise and Luis García making way. Jamie Carragher took over the captaincy from Gerrard.

Manager Rafael Benítez said: "It's always important for a striker to score and Cissé did well. He worked hard, scored a good goal and set up other chances. We knew we would be playing a tough team and it would be difficult to break them down. They played with ten men in the second half and made it tough for us but we tried to play football. We could have won by more and [substitute] Fernando Morientes could have had two goals but the most important thing was we won."

Chelsea FC 5-1 Bolton Wanderers FC

Chelsea stormed back from a goal down to claim their ninth successive Premiership win. Trailing at half-time, the English champions produced a second-half masterclass that included four goals in nine minutes and two each for Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. They remain nine points clear in the Premiership with a perfect winning record.

Stylianos Giannakopoulos put the visitors ahead on four minutes as Chelsea struggled in the opening period. They came out after the break transformed, Drogba equalising on 52 minutes. Lampard quickly scored twice and Drogba added a fourth just after the hour. Bolton defender Ricardo Gardner received a red card, and Eidur Gudjohnsen completed the scoring on 74 minutes.

"I went in early for half-time to prepare what I was going to say to them," said manager José Mourinho. "They did what I wanted in the second half, they were fantastic."

Chelsea were without winger Damien Duff, who faces a four-week lay-off following knee surgery. Fellow wide-man Arjen Robben was rested after suffering a knock playing for the Netherlands. England duo Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips started on the flanks

in their stead. Left-back Asier Del Horno was removed at half-time, making way for forward Carlton Cole as Chelsea chased the game.

KSV Beveren 0-1 RSC Anderlecht

Anderlecht enjoyed a slender victory to keep up the pressure on R. Standard de Liège in the title race. Frank Vercauteren's team have 24 points from ten Belgian First Division games. The visitors were often on the back foot against a skilful Beveren side, and Silvio Proto saved impressively from Moussa Sanogo before Nenad Ještrović scored his eighth goal of the season five minutes from halftime. Ještrović's firsttime effort rounded off a fine counterattack. Proto then made the points safe in the second half.

"You have to win hard matches too, and it can be tough against a team like Beveren," Vercauteren said. "We allowed them into our half to a certain point. We didn't want them to get into our area, and our young defence coped admirably. We then took advantage of the space they left behind them, but it will be very different against Liverpool. They play very direct football and have strong players in every position," added the coach, who started with Bart Goor and Pär Zetterberg on the bench.

Defender Vincent Kompany was unavailable with a back injury and is doubtful for the Liverpool game. Striker Serhat Akin also has back trouble, while Hannu Tihinen (bronchitis), Roland Juhász (foot) and Oleg Iachtchouk (knee) are the other walking wounded.

Real Betis Balompié 10 Getafe CF

A Ricardo Oliveira penalty was enough for Real Betis Balompié to inflict Getafe CF's first defeat of the season, preventing them from regaining top spot in the Primera División. Betis took the lead on 17 minutes after Oliveira was brought down by Getafe goalkeeper Luis García. The Brazilian forward picked himself up and fired the resultant penalty into the topleft corner. The visitors dominated, but Betis came close to doubling their lead when setpiece specialist Marcos Assunção saw his freekick rebound back off the crossbar. Getafe's challenge effectively ended when midfielder Diego Rivas was sent off late on.

Betis coach Llorenç Serra Ferrer rested right winger Joaquín Sánchez, who is suffering from a throat infection, but Fernando Varela covered admirably for the Spanish international. Paolo Castellini occupied the leftback slot in place of Luis Fernández (knee). Leftsided midfielder Xisco Muñoz went off at halftime through injury and attacking midfielder Fernando is still out (groin).

"The first half was evenly balanced but we had enough chances to score then later Getafe controlled the game, although we could have sealed the victory with a few counterattacks," said Ferrer. "We had to defeat a side that was unbeaten up until today and for that I am proud of my players."

The week in UEFAUEFA information

• UEFA supports FARE Action Week As part of UEFA's concerted anti-racism campaign, European football's governing body is using this week's UEFA Champions League games to make a stand against racism. The campaign, which is part of the Action Week organised by the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, will take place at all 16 Matchday 3 games played on Tuesday and Wednesday, where Europe's biggest stars are supporting the message against racism.

Each team will be accompanied on to the pitch by children wearing 'Unite Against Racism' T-shirts, and tannoy announcements will be made before each match. For its Action Week, the FARE network is co-ordinating activities that will involve supporters groups, football clubs from 35 countries, national associations, community and migrant organisations, anti-discrimination initiatives and schools.

• Out-of-competition doping controls UEFA is undertaking out-of-competition doping controls for the first time in this season's UEFA Champions League. The move - whereby any player can be tested outside of the regular random post-match testing - is part of UEFA's reinforcement of its anti-doping activities.

These campaigns have seen an increase in the number of drug tests in its competitions, greater financial outlay in the sector, the creation of an anti-doping unit within the UEFA administration, as well as an expert anti-doping panel and an education programme aimed at the broad spectrum of the European football community.

• Opening action draws big crowds The UEFA Champions League remains a top-draw attraction, with some excellent attendances recorded on the opening two Matchdays. A total of 513,066 fans watched the action on Matchday 1, with many stadiums packed either to full, or almost full capacity. A sell-out at the Stade Gerland (40,309) watched Olympique Lyonnais defeat Real Madrid CF, while Werder Bremen's Weserstadion was 99 per cent full (37,001) for the visit of FC Barcelona.

Two capacity crowds were registered in Germany on Matchday 2 - at the Fussball Arena München (66,000) for the FC Bayern München-Club Brugge KV encounter, and at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen (53,993) for the match between FC Schalke 04 and AC Milan. Old Trafford was 99 per cent full (66,112) for Manchester United FC's match with SL Benfica. Swiss side FC Thun's first home game at the nearby Stade de Suisse in Berne brought a 30,783 crowd (98 per cent of capacity) for the visit of AC Sparta Praha. A total of 634,335 fans attended games on Matchday 2.

Competition summaryGeneral competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Competition format: The UEFA Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals. If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. Away goals count double in that period, with penalty kicks coming into play if needed. The same rules apply to subsequent rounds with a one-off final match deciding the winners.

• Key dates: The draw for the first knockout round will take place in Nyon on 16 December with matches being played on 21/22 February and 7/8 March. The draws for the quarter-finals (to be played on 28/29 March and 4/5 April), semi-finals (18/19 & 25/26 April) and final are scheduled for 17 March 2006. This season’s showpiece will be played at the Stade de France, Paris on Wednesday 17 May 2006.

• Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match.

Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

• Record holders/new faces: Real Madrid CF are the most successful side in the history of the competition with nine triumphs (three coming in the new era) followed by
