STARS IN OUR EYES AND
OVER THE MOON
Stars in our eyes and over the moon!
In the wee hours of the night, a teacher sent in a hopeful and determined
submission. Up for grabs were free cutting edge Computing resources that
would give WWHS students the opportunity to expand their STEM skills
and future proof their workplace skills. The competition for the Intel Galileo
submission was tight and the wait was agonising. Recently, the teacher
opened an email and found the following:
"Congratulations. We are pleased to inform you that your application for the
Intel Galileo boards has been successful. Four Galileos are on their way to
your school. We have also been able to add some extra goodies to your
shipment. So be surprised!"
Surprised and elated didn't begin to describe our response! Both students and
teachers are over the moon with excitement.
What is an Intel Galileo?
The Intel® Galileo Gen 2 board is a prototyping board based on Intel®
architecture and specifically designed for makers, students, educators, and
DIY electronics enthusiasts. In short, it's a tiny computer that enables
students to dabble in the world of designing, building and innovating. Our
new Galileo boards and accessories have been donated by Digital Careers.

How will they be used?
The Computing staff are already implementing engaging strategies to implement these new resources
into learning programs across year levels. In fact, Year 12 Software Design & Development students are
working on a Galileo inspired project and two groups of students from varying year levels are
participating in the Young ICT Explorers competition with Intel Galileo Boards as a key part of their
innovation projects. By the end of the year, we aim to have enough Galileos for a class set that can be
used for student experimentation and collaborative learning in years 8 & 9 Computing elective subjects.
Having been successful in obtaining the four donated units has set us on the path to achieving that goal.
The possibilities for projects and applications using the Galileo boards are only limited by the
imagination of our students!
Why is STEM so important and how will the Intel Galileo resources benefiting our students?
In the next 20 years, 5.1 million current Australian jobs are at risk due to digital disruption and
innovation. Over 75% of those jobs will be replaced by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) careers. By providing WWHS students with access to technology and learning programs
that integrate the use of tools, such as the Intel Galileo, we are giving them the competitive edge in the
workforce. Today's students are tomorrow's innovators!

We are in the early stages of BYOD at West Wallsend High School. We cannot confirm a date when BYOD will
be implemented in our school at this time. This is due to a number of technical and policy changes within our
system. However, if parents are looking to purchase devices for home use, they would be advised to purchase
one of the recommended devices on the www.jbeducation.com.au/byod website, as these devices will be
compatible with our school once BYOD is implemented. The password for the website is DECNSW.
