Dear Parishioners: Gospel Meditation Registration for the 2018-19 Faith Formation year, including, Elementary, Middle School (the Edge), High School, (Life Teen) children and teen choirs, will begin this week end, after all Masses, in the Parish Social Hall. You can also register in the Parish Office through the week.

The website has a copy of the calendar for the 2018-19 Elementary year; listing class days and times and some information about our Elementary and Sacrament preparation programs. The Website also has information on The Edge, Life Teen and various Children’s and Teen Choirs. There are information packets available in the Church Narthex and Parish Office. First Reconciliation in this diocese is made in the second grade and Confirmation/First Eucharist in the third grade. If you have an older child, who has missed the sacraments, for whatever reason at the younger ages, or is in need of baptism, please know that we have programs available to take care of their needs. I will be available after all the masses at the table or in the office during the week to help you with sacrament preparation or faith formation questions.

For more information on the program or if you would like to be a catechist for Faith Formation in the fall, please contact me, at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. God’s Blessings, Kathie

GOSPEL MEDITATION 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Have you ever approached a hushed group and were certain they were talking about you? It's an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to do just the opposite.

The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph ? How can he say 'I have come down from heaven'?" In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the living bread" and "flesh for the life of the world."

This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories. We are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever." © LPi

Safe Environment Training

The Office of Safe Environment is going through some changes right now and there is a new Website. You can still access the old site safe environmenttraining.org

and it will take you to the new site phoenix.setanet.org. I will have more information on Set training at St. Bernard’s in August.

If you have received an email that says you need to renew just follow the link and renew your training online. Everyone who serves in ministry will need to be compliant with their training by December 31st. I will offer several opportunities for renewal at the parish if you are having trouble with the computer access … no worries. The Office of Safe Environment has asked us to please be patient through this leadership transition.

If you have any questions concerning Safe Environment Training please call Kathie at the Parish Office 480-661-9843 ex 309. I am the Safe Environment Coordinator at St. Bernard’s.
