Brown weet nie wat verder gebeurhet nie, maar onthou dat hy in dieHottentots-Holland-hospitaal wak-kergewordmetnek-,been-envoetbe-serings. Hy het steke aan sy oor enkop gekry, en sy sleutelbeen was uit.

Facebook-blad gaan skryf, en na-mens Brown om hulp gevra.

Mason het versoek om na die fietste kyk om te sien of dit herstel konword, maar die fiets was tot niet.

Juan het egter nie twee keer ge-dink nie, en ’n fiets aan die beseerdeBrown oorhandig.

Brown was in ekstase toe hy diefiets kry, en is bly dat hy weer ver-voer het. Juan Mason (links) oorhandig die fiets aan Peter Brown.

Kyamandi Arts and Culture Festival in full swingANTHONY PENDERIS

ThefourthannualKayamandiArtsandCul-ture Festival started on 1 July this year andwill run until the end of September, as partof Heritage month.

Started in 2011 in the township of Stellen-bosch, the KACF forms part of the StellenboschHeritage Project, which recognises, advises andsupports this initiative.

The theme of the KACF this year is “Unite”.The festival aims to bring together people

from different backgrounds and to facilitate so-cial cohesion.

This will be achieved by storytelling (KACFDrama - poetry, theatre), playing (KACF Cup2014 -soccer,netball), singing(KACFMusic - tra-ditional, modern, gospel), dancing (KACFDance - traditional, modern), beauty pageant(Miss & Mr. Kayamandi 2014) and Battle of DJs.

Finalists of the drama and gospel competitionwill take part in the River Festival live musicshow that forms part of the Stellenbosch Herit-age Festival, that will be held on 24 Speptember2014. .

Stellenbosch Mayor Conrad Sidego and councillorPietman Retief had a memorable time.Some activities from last year’s Kayamandi Arts and Culture Festival (KACF).

The programme equips the peer educa-tors with knowledge on how to address is-sues such as positive choices, reducingrisk behaviour in teenagers, promotingleadership and enhancing health seekingbehaviour.

A WCED-chosen youth facilitator,Nicolette Smith, who serves Stellenzichtand Cloetesville High schools, instructsthe learners on the roles and responsibili-ties of a peer educator, and prepares thelearners to address their peers.

Prof Russel Botman, die US se rek-tor en visekanselier sedert 2007, is op28 Junie onverwags oorlede.

Die uitvoerende komitee van dieraad het op 21 Julie namens die uni-versiteitsraad aksies in werking ge-stelomdieposbeskrywingengepaard-gaande advertensie te finaliseer, enom ’n keurkomitee van 17 lede aan tewys.

BuitendieraadworddieUSseanderstatutêre liggame en verskillende be-langegroepe in die keurkomitee ver-teenwoordig.

Die oogmerk is om die besluitne-mingsproses oor ’n nuwe aanstellingby die raadsvergadering van 1 Desem-ber 2014 af te handel.

Die kandidate op die finale kortlyssal aan ’n spesiale, gesamentlike sit-ting van die keurkomitee, senaat endie institusionele forum (IF) aanbie-dings maak oor hul visie vir die USen die rol wat hulle vir hulself in dievooruitsig stel. Raadslede word ookgenooi om hierdie geslote sitting by te

woon.Die senaat en die IF sal hulle daarna

formeel uitspreek oor die aanstelbaar-heid van elk van die kandidate en ook’n voorkeurkandidaat aanbeveel.

Die uitvoerende komitee (UK) vandie raad het ook op 21 Julie bekend ge-

maak dat prof Leopoldt van Huys-steen, die US se bedryfshoof, vir driemaande sal waarneem as rektor en vi-sekanselier.

Ingevolge die universiteit se statuutkan die raadsvoorsitter sonder raad-pleging ’n waarnemende rektor vir totdrie maande aanstel.

Aangesien dit die UK se voornemeis om prof Van Huyssteen te laat waar-neem as rektor totdat die nuwe rektordié amp opneem, sal daar verdereraadpleging by die raad, senaat en IFse eerste vergaderings van die tweedesemester plaasvind.

Volgens mnr George Steyn, voorsit-ter van die universiteitsraad, is dit omstrategiese en operasionele oorwe-gings in die beste belang van die uni-versiteit dat prof Van Huyssteen aan-bly in sy hoedanigheid as waarnemen-de rektor en visekanselier.

Benewens Van Huyssteen se be-stuursondervinding op senior vlak,was hy vir bykans sewe jaar dekaanvan die fakulteit agriwetenskappe enhet hy ook lank waargeneem as vise-rektor (navorsing). Hy het ’n grondigekennisvandieakademieseomgewing,finansiële bestuur en bedryfsake,” hetSteyn gesê.

insupportof localKayamandi-basedprojects. The funds are reinvested inthe Kayamandi FoodPod projectwhere vegetables are grown incrates. The aim of the FoodPod initi-ative is to provide food security andtrain local owners to run sustaina-ble agri-businesses. The residents ofKayamandi who grow the vegeta-

bles then sell the pro-duce for an income.

Also, the revenuemade by selling thewines is used to investin more vegetablecrates. A percentage ofthe produce is donatedto crèches in the area tohelp supplement thefood supplies of theserecipient crèches.

Wines With Hearthas been running forsix months and sup-ports the Sonwabileand Sibongumusa ECDCentres. Some 42 chil-dren between the agesof 18 months to 5 years,have benefited from

the donations.These crèches use the money gen-

erated from school fees to providethe children with up to three mealsper day.

However, the financial con-straints these crèches are face, re-stricts them from providing the chil-dren with a fully balanced diet. TheFoodPod and Wines With Heartprojects thus provide an essentialservice to the community.

The community of Kayamandi re-cently received a visit from the gov-ernment service Thusong.

The two day local government ini-tiative took place at KayamandiHigh School. People didn’t disap-point - theycameinnumbersto takeadvantage of this free service.

The government service wasbrought together in one place andsome of the programmes that werefeatured are Department of Health(where community members wereable to test blood pressure, TB, dia-betes, and contraceptives), Depart-ment of Home Affairs (where theyassisted people in making new IDsand birth certificates, Sassa helpedwith the social grants and other re-lated issues), Department of LocalGovernment helped the communitymembers with free ID photos, con-sumer protection with advice, andNorthlink and Boland College fo-cused on education and bursaries.

The IEC (Independent ElectoralCommission) came on board to reg-ister people for elections, the De-partment of Agriculture informedthe community about farming andthe learnerships they are offering,South African Police Services, De-partment of Public Works and theJustice Department also had theirstalls.

The Department of Labour dealtwithissuessuchasUIF,complaints,career information and compensa-tion, and services like injury on du-

ty. Some of these programmes willbe coming to the community on aregular basis.

So, the main aim, to bring serviceand information to the communityand make sure it is accessible, willbe upheld.

At the school young people camein their numbers, mostly for identi-ty books.

One of them was 17-year old Anga-nawe Dokolwana.

Young boys’ footie skills developedStellenbosch University (SU) andthe Stellenbosch Local FootballAssociation (LFA) hosted a foot-ball holiday programme duringthe July school holidays to identi-fy a squad of players for the under15 LFA board team.

The programme took place at theuniversity’s Lentelus Football Cen-tre and the Stellenbosch Academy ofSport’s (SAS) indoor facilities.

SUassistedtheLFAwiththeexecu-tionof theprogrammeandalso facili-tated a life skills programmeandpro-vided expertise in the field of sportscience and technology.

According to Joseph Jacobs, LFAchairman, the programme aimed toimplement the LFA’s vision to be thebest governed and most respected lo-cal football association in southernAfrica.

“In so doing, it is essential that weidentify, develop, nurture, equip andempower our local talent as early as

possible. We know that such an idealcan only be accomplished throughbuildingmutuallybeneficial andsus-tainable partnerships with valuablecommunity role players, such as SU.We are honoured and proud to havethemasoneofourkeypartners,”saidJacobs.

Ashley Davids, LFA’s junior chair-man echoed Jacobs’ sentiments.

“The selection of the u. 15 LFAboard teamshouldbe seenas the firststep towards identifying the top foot-ball talent in Stellenbosch. The ideais to expand the initiative tounder11,13 and 17 teams in the near future.”

SU football performance managerWarrenEngelbrecht, says:“Iamveryexcited by the prospect of the footballtalentthatwillbediscoveredandnur-tured at all age levels in future.”

The selected team will participatein a number of inter-LFA friendlymatches and will be prepared for atournament which will take place inStellenbosch later this year.

Stellenbosch University’s partnership with the LFA and involvement in the holiday programme forms part of its broader footballdevelopment programme, which was initially spearheaded by late rector of the university, Prof Russel Botman.
