A Letter from the Assistant Administrator:Bone Health for Every Age

GET MOVING. Weight bearing activities, such as walking, help build strong bones. Aim for 30 minutes of activity each day, which will also improve your overall health and weight. DON’T SMOKE AND LIMIT ALCOHOL. Smoking and heavy alcohol use decreases bone mass and increases your fracture risk. TRY BONE BOOSTING MEDICATIONS. Talk to your doctor, or one of our friendly providers, about medications that can slow bone loss and increase overall bone strength. Treatments like ReClast Therapycanhavesignificantimprovementsinbone health. EAT FOR BONE HEALTH. Good nutrition gives your body the nutrients it needs to rebuild

new bone. Make sure your diet includes these nutritional building blocks for strong healthy bones: •Calcium:Adults19to50shouldaimfor1,000

milligrams a day. Those over 50 should strive for at least 1,200 milligrams a day.

•VitaminD:Thisvitaminhelpsyourbodyabsorbcalcium. A popular source of Vitamin D is sun exposure. Just 10 minutes of sun exposure a day can help calcium absorb into your bones.

Enjoy this wonderful time of year and eat well and exercise for optimum bone health.

Have a happy April!

Shelia WarrenAssistant Administrator

With spring in the air, many people are taking the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. As we age, over time, your bones can become weakened as a result of genetic factors, poor nutrition, physical inactivity and hormone loss. While you can’t control all of these factors, you can take steps to improve your bone health at any age.

We are committed as a facility to understanding our patients’ experiences and identifying ways to continually improve. We have partnered with the National Research Corporation, a survey expert, to administer new patient surveys.

Shortly after your visit here, you may receive a questionnaire asking about your patient experience. Please honestly answer the questions and return the completed form. We need to hear from you in order to improve our quality of care.

This is just another way that we’re listening to you, our valued patients.

Nearly 26 million people have diabetes in the United States, and almost seven million go undiagnosed. With diabetes, the body’s processingandproductionofinsulinisaffected,as well as energy production from starches and other food sources such as sugar.

Diabetics should meet with a podiatrist at least once a year. Foot screenings are the best way to be protected against further complications. Each year, over 65,000 lower limbs are amputated because of diabetes. This risk can be reduced by as much as 85 percent if a podiatrist is included in your diabetic care.

Our nursing facility is fortunate to have the servicesofDr.RenitaParker,aboardcertifiedpodiatrist. “Mississippi has a high rate of diabetic amputations. That’s why I am passionate about regular foot screenings.”
