From the Desk of the Director of Nursing:Build a Nation of Safe, Healthy Communities For this year’s National Public Health Week, the focus is for all people across the U.S. to be able to live in communities that they feel safe in on a daily basis. For example, in our homes, the presence of radon gas increases the risk of lung cancer. It causes 21,000 deaths annually and is the top cause of lung cancer among those who do not smoke. Also, 40 percent of asthma attacks are caused by triggers such as mold and rodents. These types of attacks are completely preventable. Not only do
we need to take precautions inside of our homes, but also outside of our homes. More than half of those in the U.S. live in neighborhoods with ozone pollution’s which increases the risk of premature death, heart damage, and respiratory complications. Over 29 million Americans live in low-income neighborhoodsthataremorethanamilefromthenearestsupermarket, whichmakesitdifficulttoaccessaffordablehealthcareandgroceries.Althoughthesestatisticsmayseemdiscouraging, itis important to know the facts to help encourage Americans to take better precautions, and more initiative, inourhomesandneighborhoods.Pleasetakethetimetofindoutwhatyoucandotobuild a safer nation, and a healthier community.
