WelcomeDear friends,

As announced in lastmonth's Quartet, weare hoping to involve

children more and more in the life of thechurch, so please do let me know ifyour children would like to take onsome special roles on Sundaymornings, doing things like taking upthe Communion bread and wine or thecollection, or even helping me to givethe Communion wine to people as theycome up to the altar to receive it.

We are also hoping to launch a new'Family Hour Sunday School' inStratford on the first Sunday of themonth - children will have their own funsession in the side chapel of the churchwhile their parents continue with thenormal service. I have one braveparent who is willing to oversee this, and it would be great if others wouldoffer, too. We shall aim to start this onan experimental basis in the New Year,so look out for further information in thismagazine.

As also promised, we shall be revertingto a pattern of weekly Morning Prayerin the four churches, so look out for thedates and venues in each month'scentrefold.

On a rather sadder note, some of youwill have read in the local and national

press about our Rural Dean andRector of Hadleigh, Layham andShelley, Revd Martin Thrower, whowas arrested in early August forvoyeurism. He is currently suspendedfrom his duties while on police bail, and his parishes are being lookedafter until further notice by RevdCanon Dr John Parr. I have taken onthe duties of being Acting Rural Dean, and would ask for your prayers formyself, my colleagues, and all othersaffected by this very distressingsituation.

I know that those of you who arealready cynical about the Church willnot be attracted to find out more aboutJesus Christ when you hear aboutthings like this. I can only apologiseto you all on behalf of the Church asa whole. We here in HadleighDeanery hope to learn from thissituation and move forward to choosethe love of God as our guide for abetter future.

With very best wishes to you all,

Rosalind PaulRector

Editors Corner

It never ceases to amaze me how differentAugust is from September. It seems that withthe passing of the holiday season, all of asudden the warm sunny days are over andthe mud, wind and rain start again.

I think it has been even more pronouncedthis year with our lovely hot summer, but asI write this in mid September, I somehowdon’t feel it at all strange to be letting youknow Christmas is just around the corner -the weather is already telling me.

Christmas IS only just around the corner, andto prove it you will find the first of theChristmas events being advertised - it’s nottoo early to be organised!

Before we get there though, don’t forgetbonfire night. There’s plenty going on in thevillages, so do join in.

One more thing to mention, something that Idon’t remember happening before, so itwould be good to support - James Cartlidgeis doing a surgery in Stratford (see the adverton page 6) It’s good to see our MP takingthe time to come to see us!

Happy reading and don’t forget to wrap upwarm!

Anne and Jane,

Weather report

Forgetting June, I think we can say we haveexperienced a barbecue summer whichseems to have continued into September atthe time of compiling this article. No doubt the summer has been goodcompared to the average but not recordbreaking. June was the wettest recorded inrecent years in our area. I measured a totalof 115millimetres(4.5 inches) of rain for Junewhich was 2 1/2 times the average for Junewhere we live. At the same time, Franceexperienced devastating floods with theSeine overflowing its banks in Paris resultingin some loss of lives. However the monthsof July and August have been exceptionallydry. I measured a total of 21.7millimetres(0.85inches) and a total of 19.8millimetres((0.78 inches) for August, therainfall in both months being less than halfthe average. Taking into account the unevendistribution of rain, the overall amount for thesummer months was about average. The maximum and minimum temeperaturesfor July and August were appreciably aboveaverage. I recorded 22.8C and 14.8Crespectively for July and likewise 23.4C &14.8C for August. Sunshine amounts in Junewere below average because of the rain andaround average for July but an estimatedtotal of 266 hours for August being wellabove the mean for the month and explainsthe partial parchness of the landscape andthe yellow and bronze colour of our lawns atthe time of writing. By virtue of the wet June,Alton Water looked well topped up in July soI should imagine there is no immediate threatof water shortages and hose pipe bans. There has been a noticeable absence ofthunder recorded in our area this summer, continuing the trend of recent years whichdoesn't necessarily apply to other areas ofthe country. One unusual feature were thestrong winds, almost gale force, on August20th, causing some damage to fences, runner bean supports etc.We lose 4 hours daylight between August21st and October 21st so Autumn hasapproached fast. The romantic poet John

Keats(1785-1824) in his ode to Autumndescribes it as a ‘season of mist andmellow fruitfulness' which sums it up prettywell. Sadly, Keats never lived to make oldbones and was buried in a cemetery inRome, whilst on a tour of Europe.October and November tend to be someof the wettest months of the year. Theaverage maximum temperature forOctober is about 15C and for November itis around 10.5C. Don't count on thiscoming winter to be as mild as the previousone when I didn't record a flake of snowand very few frosts.Robin Jackson

Fed up with hard water andlime scale? Fitting a water softenerwill save you money and time.

East Anglia has some ofthe hardest water in GreatBritain. The scale build upon shower screens andtaps, that ring of scum inthe basin, and limescale inkettles are some of the vis-

ible consequences of hard water. We have toresort to using large amounts of washingpowder, conditioner, extra salts in the dishwasher and expensive bathroom cleaningproducts to overcome the dreaded scale. In my professionalcapacity I’ve re-placed countlessappliances thatshould have had alonger service life.

Scale blocks water ways in boilers and hotwater pipes. Heating elements in hot watercylinders and electric showers get encrusted

and fail. All these problemscan be solved by fit-ting an ion exchangewater softener. Laun-dered clothes will feel

softer, after showering your skin will feelsmoother, you’ll use far less detergents andthe adverse effects on your plumbing systemwill start to reverse. If you would like to know more, give me acall. I’m happy to show you a simple 15minute demonstration and provide an instal-lation survey. A typical installation can bedone in one day. Just a reminder for housenames/numbers to be visible. If anemergency vehicle needs to find yourhouse at night, will it find it easily?

Lots of names/numbers are hiddenbehind bushes - it would only take afew minutes to clear it but those fewminutes might make a hugedifference if the emergency vehiclefinds your house first time.

Raydon and District Gardening Club

Writing these notes on 16th September, avery wet day after the highest hottemperatures (mid 80`s) for the first weekof September for years following weeks ofhot dry weather, the rain is much needed, and also a strange coincidence because ifyou look back to 2015 Quartet on the 16thSeptember it was also a very wet day afterweeks of dry weather.

Remember the saying “what comes aroundgoes around”, it will be nice to makewatering cans / hoses redundant, giving usmore time to collect seed from plants readyto plant and increase your stock, or replaceolder plants that might have died or just bein the wrong place, or of course later thismonth you can move established plantsaround. Its also time to purchase additionalbulbs ready for planting for that extraspecial “Spring display”. If it’s tulips ofcourse don`t plant them until late Octoberor even early November. Most of all enjoyyour autumn gardens and the widercountryside.

October 27th is our “Open Charity Night”and this year we are raising funds for theEast Anglian Air Ambulance so hope youwill all come to support this very worthyCharity as who knows when it will beneeded to help somebody near and dear toany of us. Our guest speaker will give aillustrated talk, taking us all on a “ThaiOdyssey” which sounds very intriguing andI am sure will be very interesting andinformative. This will be followed by theusual refreshments and raffle. Anybody cancome so members bring along friends andneighbours to help us raise a substantialamount to yet another very worthy Charity.

As they say “Help them to help us” if andwhen needed.

To all members please attend your AGM &Members social evening on Thursday 24thNovember. It’s your chance to vote for a newcommittee, and to come and enjoy a glassof wine, cold buffet, table quizzes, grandraffle, & meet invited guests, your presidentand of course most importantly to renew yourmembership. (Not necessarily in that order)Also remember to please bring alonganybody who wishes to join the club on thenight. More members means more funds tospend on quality guest speakers and holdthe membership fee to a reasonable amount. As always your committee looks forward toseeing you all at these events.

SPEEDING – HELP TO MAKERAYDON SAFER

It is a matter of extreme concern to yourParish Council that speeding traffic in thevillage is becoming more prevalent by theday - and statistics show an alarmingpicture.

Your Parish Council is determined to try toalleviate this problem and is considering anumber of speed detection devicessuitable for our road conditions andeffective as deterrents.Research has involved a lengthyconsultation with neighbouring parisheswho have already acquired suchequipment and operated it for some time.We can report that the most effectivemeans of curbing speeding, based on ourconsultation, appears to be CommunitySpeedwatch. Some parishes say that theresults have been conclusive - speedinghas been noticeably reduced.

However, this would require volunteers tooperate the equipment. Please contact meif you would be prepared to participate, should the PC decide to go ahead with thisinitiative – full training would be given. You can find out more about CommunitySpeedwatch by visiting:http://www.suffolk.police.uk/safetyadvice/roadsafety/knowthelaw/speeding/communityspeedwatch.aspx

Kenny’s SESAW News

Our canine mascot is preparing to meet hisPublic at our Great Bentley Autumn Fair(report next month) so it’s me, Ollie here togive you the feline point of view. Last monthKenneth suggested us cats don’t notice thevolunteers but we miss nothing! Whilst hescuttles around below, up in the hay storeI observe the dog walkers; some draggedby their eager charges, others gentlycoaxing new arrivals for their morningconstitutional. Sad mutterings from thekitchen about unhappy Victor, a fellow blackcat who has been with us for months. Poorlad just needs someone to care for him andhis sore eyes. Now they are talking aboutAndy, the beautiful grey cat who likeshumans and dogs, not his own kind!As I stroll around my estate I find thefundraisers sorting books, pictures, vinylrecords and cameras for a front gardensale, 10-1pm on 1st and 2nd October.Other books are put aside for the ColneValley Railway at War event, CastleHedingham, CO9 3DZ, 10.30-5pm on 9thOctober. The ladies discuss the craftproducts and animals they are taking tomeet Gladwell's customers on 22ndOctober. Kenneth's friends from Betty'sKnitters and Stitchers will also be there atCopdock Mill, Old London Road, Ipswich,IP8 3LP. After that it's our big ChristmasFair at the Old School, Long Melford on20th November. As a car arrives with more donated itemsfrom a kind supporter I disappear, preferringto remain incognito, unlike Kenneth. Mindyou, the Chihuahua is doing a good job butdon’t tell him I said so. His head would notfit into his igloo bed if he heard praise fromme, Ollie (the Black) Cat.

Healthwatch Suffolk calls for yourstories of care in the county

Healthwatch Suffolk has the power toshape, influence and improve local NHSand social care services in the county. Itis independent from the NHS and socialcare, which means you can be honestwhen sharing your views.

It has launched a new campaign called“#NHSSelfieStars” for obtaining feedbackfrom people about their use of local healthand social care services. It wants tocelebrate what is good about services andhighlight where things could be better. The state of the current health and careeconomy means that it has never beenmore important to share your views aboutlocal services; even if you don’t think it willmake a difference. The watchdog hopesthat this campaign will encourage peopleto share their stories so that it can helphealth and social care professionalsunderstand the views and experiences ofpeople using their services and feed theminto ongoing plans to change the way yourservices are delivered.

Healthwatch Suffolk is asking people toshare a “selfie” and a story of NHS care inSuffolk so that it can highlight yourexperiences. All of the stories will beadded to the growing volume of data thewatchdog has already gathered from localpeople and used to hold services toaccount. You can share your selfie andstory with Healthwatch Suffolk onInstagram (use #NHSSelfieStars) or byemail to [email protected] is always possible to share yourexperiences anonymously withHealthwatch Suffolk. You can visitwww.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk/services,where it is possible to rate and review yourexperience within any health or social careservice in the county. Alternatively, pleasecall 01449 703949 to speak with a memberof the Healthwatch team.
