Street and Homeless YouthA Cross-Cultural Perspective

This book deals with street children who live in the developing world, and homeless youth who are from the developed world. They are referred to as children in street situations (CSS) to show that the problem is both in the children and in the situa-tion they face. The book examines several aspects of the children and their street situations, includ-ing the families of origin and the homes they leave, the children’s social life, and mental health. Other aspects are the problems of published demographics, the construction of public opinion about these children and the, often violent, reac-tions from authorities. The book then discusses current research on children in street situations, as well as programs and policies.

Features 7 Is written by authors with a great deal of experience in working with children in street situations 7 Offers insight into the current state of affairs 7 Illustrates by using gamines and chupagruesos as examples 7 Makes sound recommendations for the future

The Armed Forces: Towards a Post-Interventionist Era?The present anthology stems from the percep-tion of a widespread and manifest uneasiness concerning the business of military intervention in our times. Indeed, the West is for quite some time engaged in a deep introspection about his military intervention policies in the years to come and reflects about this. What will Western military intervention policies look like in the future; what kind of military intervention policies is wanted and what kind of military intervention policies is financially, politically and socio-culturally possible and militarily feasible? The hypothesis pursued in this volume states that, in the foreseeable future, we may see a different kind of military interven-tion policy and intervention posture of the West that will lead to different military interventions. It may be argued that we are witnessing the dawn of a new era, the era of military post-intervention-ism.

Mainstream PolygamyThe Non-Marital Child Paradox In The West

This volume explores the forms of knowledge generated by exoticizing the subject studied. It analyzes monogamy in Western cultures from a cultural distance. First, from the cultural perspec-tive of a Kenyan writer who underlines the moral evils unwittingly generated by a system impos-ing universal monogamy and generating annual cohorts of illegitimate children. Then, the essay considers the case of France, which, starting in the 1970’s, changed its laws regarding children born out of wedlock. Such children have now become legitimate. Unwittingly, this has allowed for polygyny or polyandry to become legal options for French males and females.

Features 7 Examines monogamy in Western cultures with a critical eye 7 Includes non-Western perspec-tives 7 Contextualizes the study of monogamy in the larger field of anthropology and anthropologi-cal methods and ethics

How Are Chinese Only Children GrowingFrom a Bioecological Systems Perspective

From a bioecological system perspective, Weiping Liu contends that the impacts of learning envi-ronments on the Chinese only children must be studied from a psychological ecological perspec-tive by considering the direct and joint effects of learning environments and student personality within the macro-environments of culture, public policy etc. The hypotheses were proved to be true in terms of positive outcomes. Practical and theo-retical discussions were provided as well.
