INCREASE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS.

Enhancing Instruction for Striving Readers (EISR) prepares teachers to offer effective instructional strategies for students reading two to three

levels below their current grade. EISR respects teachers’ expertise with the adolescent learner while

bolstering the participants’ understanding of the complexities of the reading development process.

How the AMP Reading System Works

AMP addresses the critical areas of literacy:

• Comprehension: 7 strategies

• Vocabulary: 32 academic words per unit

• Fluency: A fluency tip in almost every lesson

• Writing: Structured writing in each lesson and written responses from students daily.

The system combines the highest level of research-based techniques with high-interest, student-selected topics, and incorporates an explicit instructional routine based on evidence of the National Reading Panel (NRP).

How EISR Works

Our targeted approach not only helps teachers to more effectively use the AMP Reading System, but also combines examining content and their own teaching practice. The professional development program offers the opportunity for hands-on experience with each of the AMP strategies, and examines the connections between vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.

PROMOTE EXCELLENCE.

Expected Outcomes

Teachers will learn strategies to help striving readers develop the foundational cognitive abilities that are evident in good readers and improve their comprehension and communication. The program is designed to create a common language about instructional quality and to build a community of professionals dedicated to excellence in teaching for all students.

Funding

EISR is rooted in teacher quality, data-driven decision making, and school improvement. Our partner schools and school districts have used many sources to fund their literacy program, including:

• Title I

• Striving Readers (Title I, Part E)

• Local and District Funds

Approximately eight million young people between fourth and twelfth grade struggle to read at grade level. Some 70 percent of older readers require some form of remediation. Very few of these older struggling readers need help to read the words on a page; their most common problem is that they are not able to comprehend what they read.
