Breaking Open The Word

February 25, 2018Second Sunday of Lent

First Reading: Genesis 22:1-2,9a,10-13,15-18God ordered Abraham to take his beloved only son to Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice. Abraham built an altar and took out a knife to sacrifice his son Isaac. But God called out to him and told him of blessings that would be bestowed on him and his descendants because he had been willing to do what Gold had asked.Second Reading: Romans 8:31b-34Paul reminds the people that God did not spare His only Son, but gave Him up for the sake of all people. This proves God views us all as His children, and that no person can harm or condemn us because God will protect us.Gospel: Mark 9:2-10Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain where he conversed with Elijah and Moses. A voice proclaimed ‘This is my Son, my beloved. Listen to him.” Then Jesus was alone and warned them not to tell anyone what they had seen until he had risen from the dead.

Consider/Reflect:Today we join the three apostles, the two prophets and Jesus on the Mount of the Transfiguration. A mountain in the bible is where God meets His people. The two great persons representing the law and the prophets, and Jesus, have a new experience of God’s presence.Like Peter today, it is good we are here for worship, or for private time reading, or reflecting on this scripture account. Like Peter we may not know what to say in the awesome presence of the Almighty. Following the voice from the cloud, we pause to listen. What is the Lord asking of me as I begin this second week of Lent? Is He offering me words of comfort and consolation in my life as I struggle to draw closer to Him? Is He wishing that I consider how special it is to spend some time

apart to grow in holiness this Lent? As I descend from the mountain, is it time for me to invite others to experience the great love Jesus has for us?

HEARING LOOP SYSTEM

For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
