A. Welcome to CU eLearning System

The CU eLearning System i s powered by Blackboard Learn system. It i s a full-featured and widely

adopted eLearning environment around the world. Students can check course announcements;

download syllabus, lecture notes and other course materials; submit assignments and collaborate with

team members in a group.

To learn more please visit our website at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/eLearning.

B. Java & browser requirement

Ensure that you are using a supported browser and operating system.

� Check the supported browsers and operating systems list from

http://kb.blackboard.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=72810639

� Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is required, you can download from

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp.

C. Logging in the new eLearning System

� Login information

� Username: Staff ID/ Student ID (e.g. 123456 / 1100123456)

Computing ID (e.g. b000123 / s1100123456)

� Password: CWEM password

D. Customizing your home page

When you successfully log in to eLearn, you will see the Home page. Here you will find a listing of courses

in which you are currently enrolled, some tools and announcements area. You can personalize your home

page by adding more modules using Add Module and changing the color scheme at Personalize Page.

1. You can access your enrolled course under My Courses module.

2. Quick l inks to available Tools:

� Announcements – check courses & system announcements in one page

� My Grades – view assignment & assessment grades

� Send Email – send email to your classes

� Personal Information – manage privacy settings

3. My Announcements - view important information about your classes or the eLearn system.

4. You can customize your view by adding modules such as My Calendar and My Task.

E. Notifications Dashboard

Noti fications Dashboard provides a convenient place for students to find updates of their courses

including when new content becomes available and due dates of assignments and tests.

1. What’s New reports on additions and changes to course content.

2. To Do shows any works that has Due dates.

3. Needs Attention shows i tems waiting for review or grading.

4. Alerts shows any works that has not been submitted by the due date and Early Warnings setting by

instructor.

F. Browsing a course

To view the contents of a course, go to Home then click on the course name under My Courses to enter

the course home page. You wi ll see the Course Menu on the left, cl ick the menu i tem to navigate

through the course. Instructors can customize the menu, so the menu links and appearance may be

di fferent from course to course.

G. Submit an assignment

Once you have chosen the course you would l ike to work in, select Assignments from the left hand

navigation Course Menu, or find the Assignment l ink in Content Area.

1. Select the assignment that your instructor has posted.

2. Read the Assignment Information.

3. If your instructor would like you to submit your assignment via the assignment submission text box,

wri te your text in the box under Assignment Materials. If you would like to submit your assignment

through an attachment, select Browse My Computer then upload your assignment file.

4. Your uploaded assignment appears below the text editor.

5. Cl ick Submit.

6. A message appears on top of the screen, indicating that your assignment has been submitted

successfully.

H. Taking a test

Select Test from the Course Menu or find the Test link from Content Area.

1. Select the test that your instructor has posted.

2. Read the test instruction.

3. Cl ick Begin. If the test i s timed, the timer starts once Begin i s clicked.

4. Answer the test questions. Cl ick Save answer each time you have finished one question.

5. Cl ick Save and Submit once you have finished the test.

6. A message appears indicating your test has been submitted successfully.

7. Cl ick OK to view your test result i f instructor releases it once you finished the test.

I. View your grades

Students view grades from the My Grades tool. You can check the grade record and grading details of an

assignment or test. Instructors may choose to make a grade i tem unavailable.

1. Select My Grades from the Course Menu or find the My Grades l ink from Tools.

2. Cl ick Icon Legend in lower left corner and view the explanations.

Icon Legend:

� Completed – A checkmark is shown when the i tem has been completed.

� Needs Grading – A green exclamation mark is shown i f your work is waiting for a grade.

� Attempt in Process – A paper with a pen is shown i f you are currently using the Assessment or

Ass ignment.

� Grade Exempted for this User - A shaded blue square is displayed if you are exempted from the

activi ty.

� Error - A red exclamation mark is displayed if there is a system error.

� A Dash (-) i s displayed when there is no information about your grade.

J. Create or Reply to a thread

Select Discussion Board from the Course Menu or find the Discussions l ink from Content Area.

1. Select a forum that your instructor has set up.

2. You may create a thread by cl icking Create Thread.

3. If you wish to reply to a thread, select a thread.

4. Then cl ick Reply.

K. Creating Blog entry

1. Access the Blog tool or find the link of blog in Content Area. In this example, select a blog from

Content Area.

2. Cl ick Create Blog Entry.

3. Enter the ti tle for the new blog entry. Type your message in the text editor.

M. Signing Up to Join a Self-Enrollment Course Group

Your instructor can create groups of students within a course. These course groups have their own area in

the course to collaborate. Your instructor can choose whether to allow you to self-enroll in a course

group. The instructor also has the option to display the names of other members of the group to help you

choose which group to join.

1. Select Groups from the Course Menu or find the Groups l ink from Tools area.

2. On the Groups page, click View Sign-up Sheet to Join a Group.

3. On the Sign Up Sheet page, cl ick the Sign Up button. You are automatically added to the group.

(Notes: Once you are enrolled in a group, you can’t remove yourself from it. You need to contact

your instructor to unenroll your name from the group.)

4. After you s ign-up a group, the Group Homepage wi l l appear. You may see the names of your Group

members.

5. Under the Group Tools, you may a lso find the tools your instructor has made available to you.

(Within Group page, you may Exchange files, Send email, Enter discussion forums and Enter

col laboration sessions with your group members)

6. The My Groups panel appears following the Course Menu. It provides direct links to the group space

for each group you belong to. You can expand the panel to reveal all the tools that are available for

the group to use. If you are enrolled in a group, the panel appears automatically.
