rts the Visual artsThe Visual Arts faculty comprises of Leon Blackman, Jan Beyer, Leonie Sawley, Sheryl Morgan and myself, Glenys Haensel. This year has begun with a flourish of activity and excursions to visit various exhibitions during the Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Adelaide Fringe, including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the SAMSTAG, Adelaide Central School of Art, Torrens Parade Drill Hall, Light Square Gallery and the Migration Museum. Lasting impressions of interesting and compelling works of art were seen at the 2012 SACE Art Show and the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition 2012. Students engaged with the art works on display and expanded their understanding and awareness of how artworks are created and perhaps more importantly, why they are created and what is being communicated.

“One of the artworks that inspired me was ‘Sanctuary’ by Samantha Mott. It is a circular painting on plywood, using geometric design and warm colours. The artist sends a peaceful message through her art. I loved everything about this piece: the colours, design and shapes.” - Naomi Keswani, Year 11 student.

In March, several senior Visual Arts students attended the Art Gallery of South Australia where they participated in full day workshops of Life Drawing and/or Self Portraiture. This was a great opportunity to extend their drawing skills and build their art portfolios with expert tuition provided by talented South Australian visual artists. These students will also be invited to submit their art works for the annual student exhibition during the SALA Festival. This year the selected works will be hung at the Art Gallery of South Australia and the gallery’s director, Nick Mitzevitch, will open it. Also in March, students attended a Senior Secondary Student Forum to hear from recent graduates and see examples of art works, folios and visual studies, and to get a clearer understanding of the SACE requirements.

During Open Day in March, visitors on school tours were delighted and impressed with the student work on display in the Visual Arts area.

Once again the Gifted and Talented art program is being held throughout the winter months. Selected outstanding students from Years 8 – 10, who are passionate about art, have nominated to work with 2 practicing artists: painting with Ruby Chew and constructing the sculptural form with Maeve O’Hara. Over a ten week after-school time frame, these students will extend existing creative skills and develop greater awareness and sensitivity to new experiences in the world of art.

Many students who have participated in the Gifted and Talented Art program have gone on to enjoy much success in the community. Polly Dance is the Education Officer at Contemporary Art Centre South Australia. Others include graduates from the Adelaide Central School of Art, now professional artists, Jess Marr (who is also a lecturer at ACSA), Meaghan Coles and Katia Carletti. These and many others will also feature in exhibitions across Adelaide in the forth coming month of SALA.

It is encouraging to note that the successful Year 10 class logo design for the Yurrebilla Greater Mount Lofty Parklands, (‘Yurrebilla’ is the Kaurna name for Mount Lofty and Mount Bonython), is still used to promote activities associated with this area. This was most recently featured in the Ultra Marathon event to commemorate the pioneer women from Hahndorf, who walked to Adelaide to deliver their produce to market.

Stage 2 Visual Arts students from 2011 were the first to complete the new SACE Visual Arts – Art and Visual Arts – Design courses, which are constructed around 3 assessment components: Folio, Practical and Visual Study. Three of these students, Charlotte Poulain, Takuya Yamashita and Thomas Dolan, had work selected for the 2012 SACE Art Show. The current senior students are busily engaged exploring and synthesising ideas, experimenting with chosen media and techniques, further developing visual thinking and technical skills – to express insights and a personalised aesthetic with their major art and design practicals.

The Visual Arts faculty is currently in negotiation with Adelaide Central School of Art to participate in a series of workshops

and talks delivered by respected contemporary artists as lecturers. The workshops and talks aim to give students an experience of diverse art practices, an insight into the arts industry and knowledge and understanding of key concepts in visual arts practice.

It is anticipated that there will be, once again, an end of year exhibition of student art works held in The Forge on Friday 16th November. This display will also feature all of the completed practical works of the two Stage 2 classes. All details of that event will be announced in forthcoming newsletters.

ic music neWsThe Music Centre has been very busy over the last few weeks with a variety of events and celebrations. The biggest was the Special Music Short-listing and Interviews for next year’s intake. Thanks to the Music staff and SSO staff - Julie Johnson, Elaine Casey and Vardoui Gourdjian for spending their Saturday at work to fulfil this process. I would also like to thank Hillary Webber and Helen Coulson for helping on the audition days with directing and calming candidates and their parents.

On Tuesday May 22, Leonie Hempton joined Sidney Millar and Matthias Fresacher at Pilgrim Church to receive their St Peter’s Rotary Scholarships. On Sunday May 27 the Junior Choir performed at the Young Adelaide Sings event at Elder Hall. On Tuesday May 29 the Primary Schools Music Festival auditions were held for supporting artists in our Band Room, while Year 7’s were auditioning for Special Music in the Choir Room above. A number of our ensembles and individual students also auditioned.

2010 graduate Jacqueline Carias visited the Music Centre on Friday June 1 with her piano trio to perform a lunchtime concert of Brahms and Mozart. It is always great to have former students come and perform for our students and share in their music and expertise.

On Wednesday May 23 I was invited to the Brighton Secondary School’s 60th Anniversary Musical Celebration at their new Performing Arts venue. Numerous old scholars joined present students and the Army Band in a wonderful evening of music.

Finally I’d like to thank David Cann and Susan Stewart who have provided us with some fantastic photos of our students.

ic Junior choir at Young adelaide sings! On the 27th May, Marryatville Junior Choir gave a splendid performance at Young Adelaide Sings!, a choral festival at Elder Hall, The University of Adelaide.Young Adelaide Sings! is an annual choral concert organised by Australia National Choral Association (ANCA) which include choirs ranging from primary to secondary level across both private and public sectors. This is the second public performance for the Junior Choir and once again they have shown great confidence and professionalism on stage as well as off stage.

Led by music teachers, Emma Borgas and Jasmine Lim, the Junior Choir performed four songs of various styles. They were “Indian Prayer”, a native American song, “Ipharadisi” an African freedom song, “I’m Goin’ Up a Yonder” a contemporary piece which featured several soloists and finished with “What the world needs now”, a popular tune by Burt Bacharach arranged in a light jazz waltz .

Parents and friends commented on how much they enjoyed the performance and were impressed by how well the choir presented themselves. The Junior Choir will present more assembly concerts later in the year as well as at the end of year Elder Hall Junior Concert.

ic generations in Jazz – mount gambierThe 4th of May marked this year’s ‘Generations in Jazz’ and we were fortunate enough to travel to Mount Gambier with 73 other students to participate in the annual jazz festival and competition. Now in its thirty-fifth year, the festival celebrates jazz music and includes a competition for stage bands and as of 2011, vocal ensembles. For the first time in 2012, Marryatville entered its two contemporary vocal ensembles, Pops Vocal (Division 1) and Swing Tones (Division 2), as well as its three big bands into the competitions against schools from all over Australia. We were excited to participate in these competitions, as they were adjudicated by esteemed musicians James Morrison, Gordon Goodwin, Ross Irwin and The Idea Of North. Also, as a part of the weekend, we and our fellow students would see many live performances and attend a variety of workshops.

The ‘Generations Concert’ was a great opportunity for students to watch a variety of high profile musicians. Many students were inspired to see some of their idols perform and improvise in many technically difficult ways. It also included a performance from the ‘Generations

in Jazz Academy Band’ including two old scholars of 2011, Amelia Jutilane-Maynard and Angus Mason.

Also apart of the concert was Marryatville High School’s very own Big Band 1, performing to over 2000 people as a part of their prize for winning the previous year (2011).

This year, Marryatville High School debuted two choirs, Pops Vocal and Swing Tones into the competitions two divisions. These sections were adjudicated by old scholars Naomi Crellin and Sally Cameron along with their colleagues from the Idea Of North. Swing Tones, led by Jasmin Bowden and Emma Borgas performed excellently in their division, receiving fourth place for their endeavours. Pops Vocal, led by Jason Hammond competed against a number of schools in Division 1, placing second in the competition. All students who competed were extremely pleased with their performances, and both achievements were excellent for a ‘Generations in Jazz’ debut.

Big Bands II and III, led by Dave Winnall and Jasmin Bowden respectively, performed very well in their sections both placing seventh and eighth making great improvements from last year, and the students are already looking to next year to improve on this years achievement. Big Band I, led by Robbie Chenoweth, competed in Division 1 and for a second year in a row took out the national title. This division was adjudicated by internationally acclaimed musicians James Morrison and Gordon Goodwin, who are inspirations to many in the band.

Overall, the weekend was a success in many respects; students gaining the opportunity to celebrate and learn about a range of styles of jazz music, while also gaining the chance to perform in front of large audiences. Our last ‘Generations in Jazz’ was certainly a memorable one, the experience of watching so many experienced and passionate musicians perform and celebrate jazz music was priceless.

Students and teachers alike were collectively pleased to see that the hours of practice put in prior to the competition culminated in such great achievements. As a result all involved had an inspiring and fun weekend centred around music which will continue to influence our education in the future. This was a great way to end our ‘Generations in Jazz’ school experience and we are pleased that future students will be able to take part in this invaluable weekend.

canberra citizenshiP tour 2012On Sunday 13 May 2012, 25 Year 11 students departed Adelaide with two teacher supervisors. Mr Geof Bailey and Ms Robyn Herczeg, on a Premier Coach for the annual tour of the nation’s capital. Despite being on the coach for 18 hours the time went quickly. Students watched a documentary on Parliament House and movies, as well as chatted between themselves and listened to music. This year more novel quizzes were conducted with the winners receiving prizes.

As our rooms at the Canberra YHA were not available, we had breakfast and departed immediately on the day’s tour program.

We visited the Australian Electoral Commission Education Centre, Government House, National Capital Exhibition, National Museum and Telstra Tower. The visit to Government House was the highlight of the venues we visited. We saw the room where Sir John Kerr dismissed Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, in 1975 as well as other aspects of the Governor-General’s residence. Unfortunately the Governor-General was absent and the group did not get to meet.

On Monday evening we dined at the Foodcourt at the Belconnen Shopping Complex, followed by two games of 10-pin bowling at Belconnen Bowl.

Most of Tuesday was spent visiting Parliament House. The students participated in a mock House of Representatives sitting in the Parliament Education Office, in addition to visiting the House of Representatives and the Senate. In the afternoon the students were addressed by officials in the High Court building.

The students were allowed to do private shopping in the late afternoon at the Civic Centre and purchase their own dinner. The day concluded with a cruise on Lake Burley-Griffin and viewing Canberra at night from Mt Ainslie.

After breakfast on Wednesday we visited Old Parliament House, the War Memorial and Screensound Australia. The students enjoyed each of these venues and gained invaluable insights into their political, social and war-time history.

On Wednesday evening we dined at Belconnen again followed by watching a movie at the local Hoyts Cinema complex.

As Thursday was our last day in Canberra we had to pack our luggage and load it onto the coach after breakfast. We visited the Australian Institute of Sport in the morning and had lunch on the banks of Lake Burley-Griffin. In the afternoon students had the choice of visiting the National Gallery, sculptures near the Lake, Portrait Gallery, the High Court or walking directly to Questacon. The National Science and Technology Centre (Questacon) was once again one of the students’ favourites. Some students spent over three hours participating in various activities.

After a fun time on the slides and other activities we finally left Canberra at 4pm. We watched movies, told jokes and had tea at Wagga Wagga.

Early the following morning we had breakfast at Blanchetown where fun awards were presented to some of the students for the more memorable things that happened on tour.

The Citizenship Tour is possible because parents support their sons and daughters and teachers forsake their personal time to supervise the event. The School would like to thank the Commonwealth Government for their financial support in making the PACER grant available to subsidise the cost of secondary students visiting the nation’s capital.

All of the students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and the School and parents have every right to be proud of them. I am sure that students will reflect on what they learned about their constitutional system of government, as well as cherish the relationships they shared with their peers on this paw paw tour.

recent meetingAbout 20 parents met on 1st May at the Kensington Hotel, and we were very pleased to have Mr. Mark Leahy (Principal) and Ms Kerry Friedrichs (Senior Leader) join us at the meeting. Mark updated us on the re-accreditation process of the Council of International Schools (CIS); and talked about the school building program, with work on the new buildings expected to commence in Term 4. He also spoke about staff training and development in the new Australian Curriculum; and the continued strengthening of student services, student career support and international programs; and future plans for Year 8 and 9 students to be able to electronically access study materials.

Kerry and Mark both conveyed their thanks and positive comments from the Governing Council about the success of Grandparent Morning Tea and community events such as the Open Garden at Eden Park. Kerry also talked about the changes to MHS Open Day, with more prospective parents preferring to see a working school on week days, rather than on weekends.

Following Mark and Kerry’s talk, the P&F group discussed future events such as the Twilight Concert at the end of the year; and, after the success of the Year 8 Wine and Cheese night in Term 1, it was suggested that a similar event could be held for Year 12 parents at the end of the year.

It was an enjoyable evening, and we welcome anyone who would like to join us. You can be involved as little or as much as you like, and it is a great way to meet other parents and do something positive for the school community.

Callum Warrender and Parisa Rowhani-Farid will again be coordinating Marryatville High School’s programme this year. Last year, the participants broke all records for the school and the organisers are looking to go yet another step this year.

Salvation Army ‘Fill the Boxes’ campaignRecently about 20 boxes full of warm winter windcheaters arrived for our Year 12’s. In a Home Group one morning we discussed the boxes and how it would be great to fill them with ‘pre-loved’ clothes for a charity. A phone call later and the ‘Fill the Boxes’ campaign was launched.

We are aiming to fill those boxes over the next few weeks and donate them to the Salvation Army Winter Appeal.

Any clean donations will be greatly appreciated and they can be left in the boxes in the Front Office or at Eden Park.

Royal Society for the BlindThe SRC is looking at making the RSB a focus for this term. More details later

success in the maths association oF sa mathematics comPetitionThe MASA School Mathematics Competition is considered the most difficult of the mathematics competitions that is on the school calendar. Each year it attracts about 1500 of the best students from across the state, and to gain even a Credit is a significant achievement. This year 13 of our students sat the competition which is sponsored by the local branch of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. It is pleasing to record that 8 out of the 13 gained a Credit or higher.

Two students gained a place in the top 10 for their age division in the State which is an outstanding achievement.

The results were:Nathaniel Nilsen (Yr 8) Credit David Wu (Yr 10) Eighth Place Abishekh Srinivas (Yr 10) DistinctionAndy Yiazhen Yao (Yr 11/12) Tenth PlaceOliver Grenfell (Yr 11/12) High DistinctionZewen Wang (Yr 11/12) High DistinctionMengtong Tang (Yr 11/12) CreditDavid Wong (Yr 11/12) Credit
