Spleen (Pi)
Facts
Primary organ involved in digestion and transportation of food essences.
"Grainary" of the body
SP loathes "dampness"
"SP likes dryness" and "ST likes wetness"
Six Functions
Governs TnT
Food into Gu Qi
Without this transformation, no physiological process will be possible.
SP play role in every organ getting Qi and XueIf SP qi is weak => poor appetite, loose stools, gas/bloating
Fluids
If SP is not TnT fluids => dampness and/or phlegm
The SP should always be treated in cases with dampness and/or phlegm
Controls (formation and holding ) of Xue
Keeping Xue in Xue vessels
If SP qi xu => hemorrhaging => blood in urine/stools, bruising easily, nose bleeds
Generates Xue
Via Gu Qi ; if Xue is Xu => SP is primary organ to be tonified
SP has major role in production of Qi and Xue
"SP and ST are the roots of post heaven Qi"
Controls the muscles and four limbsQi and Xue nourish the muscles
Weak and heavy limbs => SP Qi Xu
Muscle tone and relative strength => shows the strength of the SP Qi
Opens to mouth and manifests in the lips
Taste is closely related to SP
Issues => lack of taste; lack of appetite, dry lips (pale), pale gums => SP qi xu
Raises the central Qi
Provides the primary ascending force in the body
If SP xu => prolapsed =>uterus, hemorrhoids, ST, UB
Clear qi may not be transported, turbid qi may not be transported down
Gu Qi not be sent up to the chest
Clear yang not sent to head => lack of clear thinking
Wastes may not excreted
Dampness and ensue
Houses the Yi (thinking ability / thought)
Relates to the capacity for thinking and concentration.
Focusing, memorizing, studying
Excessive studying => SP Qi Xu
Over thinking/worry SP Qi Xu
Ming Men (Gate of vitality) [no questions on final]
Provide of heat to the bodyMing Men (for now) is KI Yang
Metaphor => "pilot light"
Originally
Right KI => Ming Men => provided heat
Left KI => physical foundations of KI
Now
Ming Men => space between the kidneys
Heats up the jing => Jing separates yin and yang

Kidneys (Shen)
Facts
Kidney Yin is the foundation (root) of all the yin energies of the body
KI Yang is the foundation (root) of all the yang energies of the body
"KI are the root of yin and Yang for the entire body
Aversion (loathes) to Cold (B. Damone) [Statements of Fact: Aversion to Dryness]
Eight Functions
Stores Jing and governs birth, growth, reproduction, and development
KI store both pre and post natal jing
Stages of development (7/8)
KI jing is the material bases of KI Yin and KI Yang
Produces Marrow, brain and controls bones
Marrow (enclosed in bones) => Bone marrow, brain, and spinal cord
Brain is closely related to health of the Kid Jing
Mental strength, will power (zhi)
Poor concentration, dizziness, muddled thinking
Bones and teeth =>
"Teeth are the overflow of the bones"
Governs water
KI have large role in fluid metabolism
SP's TnT ability (function) => relates to fluid metabolism
SP gets the heat from KI Yang
KI are responsible for opening and closing "the gate"
Proper urination
KI Yang XuExcessive urination
KI Yin Xu
Scanty urination
UB => stores and transforms and excrete fluids
UB gets the qi to do this from KI
Controls the reception of Qi
KI must "grasp" the Qi that lungs are trying to descends (inhalation)
If KI can not do this
Difficulty on inhalation
Breathing high up in chest
Opens to the ears
Health of ears => related to health of KI
Other organs are involves with hearing issue alsoManifests on the head hair
Quality and coloring of the hair
Controls the two lower orifices
Urethra & spermatic duct
Urethra => incontinence, enuresis (urinary retention)
Spermatic duct => Spermatorrhea (KI Xu)
Anus
Physically => LI
Also related to KI => KI qi controls the orifice of anus
KI xu => Diarrhea
Houses Zhi (will)
Will power, motivation, focus and determination
PathologyKI Xu
Growth issues, bone deformation, impotence, hair loss, hearing loss (over time), tinnitus (low pitch, high
pitch => LV excess)
Dull, brittle, thin head-hair, back pain
Spermatorrhea, incontinence, enuresis (urinary retention)
KI Jing
Poor concentration, dizziness, muddled thinking
KI Yang Xu
Excessive urination
Diarrhea (cock's craw diarrhea - happens at 5/6am)
KI Yin Xu
Scanty urination
Fails in reception of Qi (from LU)
Difficulty on inhalation
Breathing high up in chest

Gall Bladder (Dan)
Facts
Only yang organ that does not transport food or waste
Does not communicate directly with the exterior of the
body
"curious" yang organ
Stores refined substance
Three Functions
Stores and excretes (releases) bile
LV sends bile to GB => stored and released as
necessary
Bile - Pure substance
GB - only yang organs that stores a
pure substance
Bile excretion/release happens @ GB
Bile excretion is controlled by the LV qi
LV is sent to GB to ensure proper release of bile
LV qi stasis => can result in improper bile
excretion
Which in turn affect ST and SP
Controls judgment (Governs decisions)Courage to act on decisions
(Capacity to make and act on decisions)
Controls Sinews
GB provides => Qi
LV provide => Xue
Stomach (Wei)
Facts
"ST and SP are the root of post heaven Qi."
Four Functions
Controls the rotting and ripening(R&R) of the food
R&R transforms the food into a substance that the SP
can extract food qi (Gu Qi) from
After transformation - SP extracts Gu Qi
Waste sent to SI => further separation and
absorption
"If Qi of ST is strong (weak), the prognosis is good
(bad)"Controls the transportation of food essence.
ST is responsible for generating tongue quoting
White Tongue Quote => Normal or cold;
Yellow => Heat
No Quote => weak ST Qi, not able to
generate tongue quote
Controls the descending of Qi
ST sends food to SI
If ST cannot descend Qi => stagnation and rebellious
Nausea, vomiting, HT burn, distention
LV Qi helps ST Qi descend
LV Qi Stasis (LV attacking ST) - can obstruct
the ST Qi, coughing, ST Rebellious withemotional aspect
"ST origin of the fluids"
First place where fluids are separated
"ST likes wetness & dislikes dryness"
ST Yin Xu (dryness for now) leads to yin Xu of other
organs
Mental aspects
ST prone to heat and damp condition
ST can be associated with manic behavior (mania)
Heat and damp can affect the shen
Uncontrolled talking, laughing, singing,
violent behavior
"taking off one's cloth and climbing tohigh places"
ST (Wei) SP (Pi)
Yang Yin
Decends Ascends
Likes wetness Like dryness
Dislikes dryness Dislike dampness
Prone to excess cond. Prone to Xu
Prone to heat cond. Prone to cold cond.
Prone to yin Xu Prone to Yang Xu
SI (Xiaochang)
Two Functions
Controls receiving and transforming
Receives fluids and food from ST and does further
(meticulous) separation of clear from turbid
Clean part of the food (not fluids/jin-ye) is sent back
to SP to be processed with Gu Qi
Dirty of the food => LI and UB => excreted as stools
and urine
Separates FluidsFluids from ST => SI
Pure => UB => P => sweats; IP=> Urine
Impure=> LI
KI Yang provides heat for separation of f luid
Mental aspects
"Capacity to make decisions" - GM
Power of discernment, ability to distinguish relevant
issues with clarity before we make decisions
Related to ability to discern right and
wrong and to have "clear judgment"
Can not see options - dysfunction
LI (Dachang)
Facts
Receives food and fluids from SI
Reabsorb some of the fluids, and excretes stools
Many chronic LI issues in western medicines are SP issues inTCM (IBS, diarrhea, abdominal pain, chronic gas bloating,
constipation, etc)
UB (Pangguang)
Facts
Stores and releases urine
Also plays a role in transformation of waste into urine
Pathogen can transfer between HT and SI and also
between SI and UB
HT fire => SI => UB (pathomecch. of chronic UTI)
One Function
Removes water by Qi transformation
Pure/Clear (fluid) of SI => UB Pure => sweat ;
mpure => Urine
Heat and Qi come from KI Yang
Mental / emotional:jealousy, suspicion, and the holding of
grudges.

San Jiao (Three Burners/Warmers)
Philosophical organ. Three ways to view the San Jiao:
Three Jiao
Upper (Shang) Jiao - Diaphragm and up (HT, LU, PC and Head
"Like a mist"
Controls receiving
Function: Dispersing fluid all over the body via LU
Middle (Zhong) Jiao - Diaphragm to umbilicus (ST, SP, GB, LV)
"Like a muddy pool" (Fluid physiology)
"bubbling cauldron" (Digestive functions)
Controls "Rotting & Ripening"
Function: Digestion and TransportationIntake of food and fluids, extracting useful and transporting to all parts of body
Lower (Xia) Jiao - Below umbilicus ( [LV?], KI, Intestines, UB, legs)
"Drainage ditch"
Controls excreting
Function: Separating clean/pure and dirty/turbid and excretion of dirty/turbid
One of the 6 yang organs
Receives food and drinks, digests and transforms it, transporting nourishment excrete wastes, etc.
Yang organ: allow sub-pure substances to pass through the body, and they control the flow.
SJ controls the movement of various forms of Qi as the are being produced & transported in the body.
Giovanni M: "to let out"
SJ's job to "let out" proper substances in a smooth fashion otherwise blockages will occur
"Minister of irrigation"Upper Jiao - Let's out wei qi; direct it to LU - where the LU will distributer it.
Pathology: impairment of LU dispersing function, e.g. facial edema, wei qi xu pattern
Middle Jiao - Let out ying qi; directs it to all organs
Pathology: impairment of SP's TnT fxn., e.g., abdominal distention, gas, bloating
Lower Jiao - Let out body fluids - directs them to UB
Pathology: impairment of UB's Qi transformation function, e.g. urinary retention
As an avenue for Yuan Qi
Yuan Qi stored I KI - "Motive force" - provides heat for TnT to happen
SJ is the vehicle that carries the Yuan Qi to the organs
Pathology: SJ stagnation could prevent from organs receiving Yuan Qi, i.e., upper Jiao stagnation means
yuan qi will not reach to the organs in upper Jiao

Extraordinary Fu (yang organs)Uterus
Has a relationship with KI
KI => relates to conception, pregnancy and reproduction
Ren and Chong mai bring Qi and Xue to uterus
Ren and Chong mai are closely related to KI
"if the KI are strong, Ren and Chong will flourish"
If not => not enough qi and xue to uterus => lead to various dysfunctions
One must have abundant KI Jing in order to have regular menstrual flow, conceive, and carry a
child to term
Has a relationship with XueNeeds an ample supply of Xue at all times
SP holds the Xue ; if SP can not hold Xue => heavy menses
SP generate Xue (Gu Qi); if not => scanty flow
HT governs Xue; HT Fire => internal heat => heavy excessive flow
Has an ever closer relationship with Liver xue
LV Qi stasis => dull achy pain, irregular cycle
LV Xue stasis => sharp stabbing pain
LV Xue xu => scanty, amenorrhea
In General KI are more related to reproduction where as the LV is more related to menses
Connection between Uterus and ST
Via Chong mai
Morning sickness
Brain ("sea of marrow")
Curious: because it "stores but does not discharge."
Some sources say mind, consciousness and thought are related to heart and some relate to Brain - both are correct.
In reality - treating zangfu organs, treats the brain as well.
LV governs smooth flow of qi
KI tonic good for brain functions
Marrow
Closely related to brain, spinal cord, bone marrow.
Originates from KI.
Bones
Store marrow.
Also related KI.
If KI Xu => bones will be weak.
Xue vessels
Contain Xue
Gall Bladder
Stores pure substance
Does not communicate with exterior
No clinical significance of GB being a curious organ.
