2011 Camp Guide

IT’S THe SUMMeR TO DISCOveR

ABOUT CAMPWhat makes YMCA camps so special? For starters, caring, honesty, respect, responsi-bility and faith are the cornerstones of every YMCA program. In addition, the Y adds a unique component to help children develop positive identities, values and social skills. That component is known as “Developmental Assets.” These are 40 essential charac-ter-building blocks that young people need to grow up to be healthy, competent, car-ing and responsible adults.

Our goal is to help youngsters acquire these building blocks to create a firm founda-tion for life—a positive identity; a strong sense of power, purpose and self-worth; and values that will enable them to make wise choices throughout life. We want to help them become compassionate, well-rounded and well-adjusted individuals who care about the well-being of others and learn to place the needs of others above their own.

Top Quality To achieve high quality in our programs, we follow YMCA of the USA’s Day Camp Guidelines, found in the YMCA Day Camp Manual, while incorporating daily, the components of sports, the arts, spirituality, swimming, and character development education with a significant amount of outdoor programming. Our campers are divided into small groups, with each group led by a specific counselor. We comply with all of our YMCA’s policies and rules, and all local, state and federal laws and licensing requirements related to this program.

Our Staff The loyalty and dedication of our impassioned, educated and highly trained staff is extraordinary. Our staff are excellent role models for our campers and we pride our-selves on our careful screening and selection to employ the finest camp counselors, directors and support staff in the region.

Candidates must meet strict YMCA qualifications, which meet and often exceed licens-ing standards and YMCA Child Care Administration guidelines; pass a criminal check; Child Protective Services check and participate in several training and certification programs, including infant/child CPR, First Aid, prevention/recognition of child abuse, OSHA blood borne pathogens, child development, curriculum planning and licensing regulations.

Security Our reputation for consistency, dedication and safety make parents feel confident en-trusting us with their child’s camp experience. We continuously review our health and safety policies to ensure the well-being of each child.

Our low child-to-staff ratio of 1:12 enables the staff to foster solid relationships and provide sound guidance, while maintaining the stability that contributes so effective-ly to the comfort, security and development of the children in our programs. All staff related to camp programs have written job descriptions, goals and objectives for their areas of responsibility.

Financial Assistance We believe every child should have the chance to enjoy YMCA Camp. Our Open Doors program makes financial assistance available, as funds permit, to families who are un-able to pay the full program fee.

Funds for financial assistance have been made available through generous contribu-tions to We Build People, our annual giving campaign. Contact your local YMCA for more information on how you can participate in the Open Doors program.

Resident camp is a fun and exciting overnight experience for children ages 8-16. Check it out on page 4.

For 10 years, The First Tee of Hampton Roads has been a significant youth development program within our community. There are nine core values learned, practiced and reinforced at The First Tee: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy, and Judgment. These values provide a solid foundation of life skills and character values benefiting our youth and can be applied both on the course and at home, in school and throughout their adult lives.

Youth can participate in our youth development program through classes and camps that are offered all year long. Your children can begin with The First Tee certification classes at age 5; they run in six-week sessions throughout the year.

All programs teach nine core values and life skills, as well as the techniques of golf. Your child can participate in camp at age 8; camps kick off with Spring Break week, April 18–22 and then run weekly, beginning June 20.

Campers will spend their weeks in groups of 5 or less, enjoying the outdoors, going on field trips & special events, and venturing well beyond their expectations.

Hilltop explorers Camp This preteen camp can be an impactful contribution to the emotional and social development of each camper. This summer of exploring will include adventure and discovery of many fun and fascinating local attractions which will provide campers the opportunity to enhance the skills necessary to live, work, and play well together. supportive relationships that enable each camper to reach his or her full potential.

Big-time Basketball Camp Instructors will work on passing techniques including the bounce pass, chest pass, and overhead pass. Shooting games will help campers with lay-ups, close range and medium range shots. Instructors will also work with the kids to improve defense, footwork, and rebounding. Each day, campers will take part in team games

that will allow them the opportunity to showcase their new and improved skills.

Catch-a-Wave Surf Camp There is no better time for learning than when you are a kid. Get your camper started off in the sport of surfing on the right foot. This 3- to 4-hour surf lesson is geared towards campers ages 7-13 to experience and learn all about the ocean and the thrill of surfing. Learn the basics of surfing from seasoned instructors, while getting advice on equipment, technique and hands-on instruction. All instructors will be certified and trained in CPR and First Aid and children will always be accompanied by certified Lifeguards.

A Trash Band has many things in common with a traditional drum corps but presents participants with unique opportunities to be engaged with the direction and construction of the materials as well as the structure of the camp.

Blazing Rocket Camp Blazing Rocket Camp will take the campers on a fun and exciting journey through space. Each camper will become an astronaut for a week. Campers will take part in weeklong projects where they will design their own space stations and build their own rockets that they will launch at the end of the week. Campers will be able to seize knowledge from visiting places such as Nauticus, the Air and Space Museum, and Hampton Roads’ Military community. Cadets will be led by a group of well trained ROTC and ex-ROTC/Military members.

and skills in cheerleading. The skills that will be demonstrated and practice include: tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers and stunting. Instructors will provide leadership and guidance in the areas of skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The campers will finish the week with an opportunity to showcase their work in a pep rally.

Campers will engage in photo-activities that teach them things like composition, focus, reading the light, and how to see things with their own artistic eyes. Campers are welcome to bring their own cameras but cameras will be provided. Photo sessions will be heavily geared towards photographing the outdoors and the campers will take field trips to local parks and beaches where they will have to opportunity to go on photo-explorations. Other areas of focus will include portraits and still lifes. This camp will be lead by Hilltop’s well known artist and former Tidewater Community College Architecture Design teacher, Dee Glashceen.

Flag Football Touchdown! Passing, catching, route running and defense skills are taught in order to compete in scrimmages.

Golf Fore! Yes, it is all in the swing. Campers will learn the basics of setting up for the swing with knees flexed, eyes behind the ball, weight balanced and the “V”. Then, the basics of the swing will be taught—club swings back parallel to the ground, shoulder under the chin, shift your weight from right to left, head down, finish high and then hold that pose. Time will also be spent learning to putt and chip. All of these skills are needed to complete a round of golf.

karate Karate is an ancient form of self-defense and exercise. Campers will learn the proper way to execute a round kick and side kick, how to block kicks and punches and how to adopt the karate stance. They will even learn the proper way to tie their belt!

lacrosse For kids learning how to play lacrosse, the key skills to start with revolve around the lacrosse stick. Campers will learn how to cradle, how to catch and throw a lacrosse ball, and basics like scooping up ground balls. There will be a ton of practice so that campers can move those skills to the field learning field position and the importance of teamwork for passing, shooting and defense.

Multi-Sports Each day focuses on a different sport such as soccer, basketball, football and more.

Soccer Soccer is the most popular sport in the world! Known as football in most countries, soccer is a fast paced game that consists of two teams with 11 players on each team. Campers will participate in team and individual drills designed to build skills such as inside foot passing and receiving, dribbling, and throw-ins while learning about typical mistakes made in the game and gaining knowledge of the game of soccer. Sportsmanship including observance of the rules of fair play, respect for others and graciousness in losing will all be discussed while teaching the children to work as a team which is important not only in sports but in life.

Street Hockey Compete in games while learning the basics such as forehand passing, backhand passing, pass reception, stick handling, positioning, and shooting.

Surfin’ Virginia Beach Hang Ten! Skills like: body & board position-ing, getting into the water, Eskimo roll, Duck diving and catching a wave are just a few of the skills that will be taught as kids receive instruction and practice at the beach just like a pro surfer.

Swim Camp Campers will spend lots of time in the pool improving swimming techniques, learning safety skills, and some face-paced water games. Campers must be able to swim length of the pool and be able to tread water as this is not for beginner level swimmers.

Tennis This camp is developed for beginners just learning the basic skills and for experienced players looking for skill refinement needed for match play.

volleyball Bump, set, spike! Participate in drills around setting, jumping, serving, blocking, digging and passing to prepare for matches while learning team play.

Wrestling Gain the skills and knowledge of the game such as pinning, positions, and take downs to compete in matches.

Counselor In leadership Training Young teens learn about all aspects of camp operation and develop work ethic, respon-sibility, leadership and supervisory skills. CILT Camp teaches enthusiastic young adults leadership skills and the fundamentals of working with children, including CPR and First Aid Training, Basic Child Development, licensed child care protocol, group manage-ment and group games for kids, to name a few. Each CILT spends his or her day with one of our camp groups working alongside a mentoring counselor. They will have the op-portunity to interact with the children, teach and play games, sing songs, perform skits and more!
