CAMP LEADERSHIP

Why Your Child belongs at the Y:

Our core values. We make our core values—caring, honesty, respect and responsibility—part of everything we do.

Our commitment. We plan our programs around essen-tial elements to help kids grow up caring and responsible. We call these elements “Developmental Assets.”

Our staff. We are caring, competent and experienced. Our training includes camp safety, activity planning, CPR, First Aid, and more, making your child’s experience both safe and fun.

Low camp staff/child ratios:1:10 entering grades K-3 1:12 entering grades 4-9

Our promise. No child is denied access due to inability to pay.

Our pledge. We are dedicated to making you and your child’s experiences at the Y extraordinary. At the end of the day, your child will come home with stories of a fun-filled and fabulous day.

With the Shelby County YMCA, you are participating in a camping program you can count on, not just for good supervision and safety, but for the personal growth of your child. We work hard to select leaders who will be positive adult role models for your child and who have demonstrated responsibility, maturity, and reliability. Our attention to safety and the campers’ health has resulted in a safety record that any organization would be delighted to match. Beyond safety and good supervision, the YMCA believes that special, positive, and growth-filled opportunities await every child who attends the Y Camps.

We look forward to providing a quality camp experience for your family.

In service,Rhonda, Gabby and Ben

We recommend registering for our Classic Camp Programs which are designed for specific age groups and are a great experience for new and returning campers. Please refer to the highlighted field trip for the specific age group of each week to help you make your decision. If you are interested in an overnight experience, consider the overnight resident camps at YMCA Camp Cosby. As your child attends camp throughout the summer, we recommend registering your child in a variety of camps to expose them to new and different possibilities. Take a look at our Specialty, Sports, and Aquatic camps for other wonderful camp experiences.

To better fit our exciting superhero theme, each age group has been designated a specific team of superheroes and each individual group has been named after a particular hero. Values lessons and games will have unique heroic twist this summer as the staff encourages campers to use the superheroes to learn, have fun and engage their creativity. Campers will experience the adventure and excitement of the outdoors daily, meet new friends, and express their growing independence under the supervision of qualified and caring YMCA camp staff. basketball CampEntering 1st-8th GradeThey shoot…..they score. A basketball camp for your child to learn individual and team drills. We will conduct drills for dribbling, shooting, passing and defense. Each afternoon campers will play games to practice skills learned.

Coach’s biosWomen’s BasketballDespite being another “freshman” in the UM Coaching Staff, Brittney Ezell brings with her many triumphs and a track record that speak for themselves. As the Women’s Head Basketball Coach at Okaloosa-Walton College in Florida, Ezell posted a 57-28 record (.671), which included an appearance in the NJCAA Regional Tournament and 20 wins in one season. She helped 12 of her players sign with NCAA Division I schools and two others who signed with NCAA Division II schools. Coach Ezell knows what skill is, how to improve it, and how to turn the most enthusiastic rookie into a seasoned pro.

Men’s BasketballAs if Coach Ezell’s prowess wasn’t enough, YMCA Basketball campers will have the added experience of the Men’s Basketball Head Coach Danny Young to boot. Coach Young has been with the UM Falcons for six years, last year guiding them to their fifth consecutive Gulf South Conference Tournament. Since his arrival the program has transformed into one of the stronger NCAA Division II programs of the country. In only a four year span, the Falcons have appeared in two “Elite Eight” appearances, four consecutive NCAA Division II South Regional Tournaments, and three Gulf South Conference Championships. With both Coach Ezell and Coach Young on the courts, YMCA Basketball will be an entirely new and better ball game this summer.Date: July 6-10Cost: $125 Members $187 Non-Members

Coaches bioThough only in his “sophomore year” at the University of Montevallo Head Baseball Coach John Jarnagin brings nothing but proven experience to the program. While serving as the head coach for Morehead State University in Kentucky from 1995 until 2007, Coach Jarnagin watched as eight of his players were picked for the Major League draft, he also received five “Coach-of-the-Year” awards. With such an established record of excellence UM and the YMCA both are lucky to have him coaching their players. Date: July 20-24Cost: $125 Members $187 Non-Members

Coach’s bioAfter only eight seasons of being the Head Coach of Piedmont College’s Lady Lions, Katie O’Brien has received so many awards and accolades that the sky would seem the limit to the successes she will bring UM’s Lady Falcons in her first season as Head Coach. In her relatively short career Coach O’Brien guided her team to their first NCAA Division III National Tournament, as well took her team to two Great South Athletic Conference Tournament Championships. With such skill and enthusiasm it is clear she will bring both UM and the YMCA a great opportunity to learn and improve.Date: July 27-31Cost $125 Members $187 Non-Members
