created using some of the photographs. We will cre-
ate our own “mini studio” and have secondary pro-
jects to extend our discussions. Past Summer Camp
Photography photos have been featured in two Tho-
mas Center Mezzanine Gallery shows: Thomas Cen-
ter Through the Eyes of Millhopper Montessori School
and 100 Year Anniversary Celebration of the Thomas
Center.

In an effort to remind out children that summer days CAN be spent outside we will be
venturing to a variety of natural establishments for hiking, swimming, fishing and more.
Campers will hopefully experience some places they have never seen before and get a
little more in touch with nature. The plan for this week is to be off site each day (weather
permitting). We will pack the sunscreen and the bug spray and hit the trails and springs.
*The price of the field trips will be in addition to the camp fee listed and will be collected
with the permission slips. We will need drivers, and drivers will have their admission to
any destination paid by the school.

sewing machine, hand sewing projects, weaving and plastic sewing as they complete sev-
eral different projects.

WEEK 2 (Cont) June 17 - June 21
Woodworking (rising 2nd—8th graders)
This week the students will use many tools and materials to create fun projects. We will read simple plans, measure, cut, drill and
nail during the workshop. The projects will then be sanded and painted by the students. The finished products will be put on dis-
play for the students and parents to enjoy before being taken home at the end of the week. Tools will be used by the students and
instructors. There is a $15 supply fee for this workshop.
Summer Olympics & Wide World of Sports (rising 1st - 8th graders)
In honor of last year’s Olympic Games campers will learn about and participate in a summer camp style version of many events.
Campers will be sorted into countries, learn about their new “homes” and play a wide variety of games while trying to earn medal
points for their flag. Integrated into the Olympics will be a cornucopia of sports that are popular in other countries but get little
publicity in America. Our camp will spend some time learning about and playing a few of these lesser known athletic gems. Each
day will consist of a variety of games, skill drills, knowledge based activities and even crafts relative to the weeks theme sport
(s). We will not be playing any particular sport exclusively. We will integrate the skills and concepts into a fun filled day.
WEEK 3 June 24 - June 28
Little Chefs (rising Kindergarten—2nd graders)
Learning to cook is more than just learning how to follow a recipe. It is an adventure into the basics of chemistry, an exercise in
math and reading and the visual art of natures palette. In addition to creating a yummy dish each day, we will talk about eating
healthy and will finish the week with a top chef style competition. $15 supply fee will be added.
Mad Scientist (rising 2nd - 8th graders)
Everyday is an adventure as we explore various topics, fun projects and materials, microscopes, magnifying glasses, telescopes,
pulleys, the scientific method and much more. Come and enjoy the world around us! You never know what we will discover next!
Aquatics (rising 1st - 8th graders)
Campers will participate in two onsite water extravaganzas where we
introduce some H2O to a few popular games. This will go along with trips
to two local swimming venues (TBA) and a voyage to Aquatica in Orlando.
Show up with your bathing suit under your clothes and pack the sun-
screen, as we will be soaking up the Florida fun and sun. *The price of the
field trips will be in addition to the camp fee listed and will be collected
with the permission slips. We will need drivers, and drivers will have
their admission to any destination paid by the school.
WEEK 4 July 1 - July 5 (no camp on Wednesday, July 4th)
Amazing Creatures (rising Kindergarten - 2nd graders) This week campers will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some AMAZING critters such as reptiles, bats,
snakes and more. We are working on coordinating an on site visit by the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, Lubee Bat Conservancy
and the Alachua County Beekeepers Club. Presentations will be mixed with lots of hands on exploration during this exciting week
of camp.
9
WEEK 4 (Cont) July 1 - July 5 (no camp on Wednesday, July 4th)
Invention/Animation (rising 2nd - 8th graders) This week you will learn about various inventors and inventions. Our focus will be to explore and create fun projects using cranks, pulleys, levers
and motors. You will use your imagination and hard work to cooperatively make an original invention. In the animation portion, you will learn
the history and process of animation. You will create your own animated short using a program best suited to your talents. We will have an spe-
cial viewing of the completed projects on Friday. Your short will be put onto a disc for you to take home when you’re finished.
Beginning Sewing (rising 1st—8th graders)
This class will serve as a fun and exciting outlet as the children are introduced to using a sewing machine, hand sewing projects, weaving and plas-
tic sewing as they complete several different projects.
WEEK 5 July 8 - July 12
The Big 3 (rising 1st - 8th graders)
During this week of diversity, campers will learn about and play all of the “mainstream” sports: Football, Basketball and Baseball. Each day we will
dabble into each sport with mini-games and indoor activities based on each sport. The camp will serve as somewhat of a highlight reel of Amer-
ica’s most popular sports. Each day will consist of a variety of games, skill drills, knowledge based activities and even crafts relative to the
weeks theme sport(s). We will not be playing any particular sport exclusively. We will integrate the skills and concepts into a fun filled day.
Rock Star Camp (rising Kindergarten- 2nd graders)
During this fun, interactive camp, our little Rock Stars will put together bands for karaoke and air guitar, dress up like a Rock Star and hold a cos-
tume changing relay . We will be exploring different music styles through the 60’s, 70’s 80’s and 90’s and the children will have the opportunity to
form a band of their own complete with band logo, “press” photo’s and flyers. See you at camp!
WEEK 5 & 6 July 8 - July 12 & July 15—July 19
Drama: TWO WEEK Performing Arts Intensive (rising 2nd—8th graders)

characterization, pitch and more. At the end of the two weeks the Millhopper Montessori Players will present a Disney Spectacular Revue. The
Disney Spectacular is written and arranged by Mac Huff and produced through special arrangement with School Musicals. We’ll be performing
Disney favorites such as Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo, A Spoonful of Sugar, Heigh-Ho, Whistle While You Work, A Dream Is a Wish
Your Heart Makes, The Bare Necessities, It’s a Small World and When You Wish Upon a Star. We will also present various skits and scenes. Note:

available July 5, 2013.

Leis, grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts are required for this fun filled week of camp. We will have a Hawaiian Luau, sample island snacks, make smoothies and experience a paper mache volcano eruption. The children will also learn the translation of their name to Hawaiian. See you at camp!
Oh, The Places You’ll Go (rising 1st—8th graders)
We are ending the summer with a bang! This camp will venture offsite every single day of the week to visit a local destination that keeps us ac-tive. Campers will skate, bowl, climb and much more in this camp designed to get students aware of all the things they can do in and around our community to stay fit and active. *The price of the field trips will be in addition to the camp fee listed and will be collected with the permission slips. MMS incorporates food preparation in the Montessori curriculum area of Practical Life
**MMS does not have a nurse on staff. The teachers and assistant teachers are all certified in first aid and CPR. MMS can give
medication orally or assist with an Epi-Pen if the parent has filled out the appropriate form for the dispensing of medicine.
**If a child is allergic to an ingested substance (such as red food coloring or chocolate) and is old enough to monitor himself or
herself, there should not be any difficulty in the MMS environment. It is the parent’s responsibility to have alternate food avail-
able for birthday parties or the child can be proactive and abstain from special snacks. It will not be the responsibility of the
school or the teachers to notify parents in advance of an in-class event such as a special snack or a practical life activity con-
taining food.
