Introduction

We look forward to providing an exciting summer, filled with tremendous summertime

experiences that only Durham Public Schools can offer. Each summer is especially designed to

offer opportunities for young people to extend their learning and engage in new experiences.

This handbook serves as a reference guide for school leaders. It contains vital information about

all district sponsored summer programs. Please review the entire handbook and share with your

staff. It will be especially helpful to ensure your front office staff has a copy available when

answering parent questions. If you have any questions or comments, please call or email the

summer program contact indicated by the specific program. Additionally, you will find the

following information:

a summer programs “quick reference” chart

a brief overview of each program; and

parent letters and applications for programs with open enrollment.

Summer programs that serve specific students based on programmatic or NCDPI guidelines (i.e.

Take Two, ESY, Read to Achieve and Project WIN) are not open to the public and are not

included in this document. Please speak with the summer program contact if you have questions

or need additional information.

Program Descriptions

Take Two: Elementary Grades EOG Re-administration*: The Take Two Summer Program

is a nine-day camp in which students will receive additional instruction and an opportunity for

re-administration of the EOG in 4th grade math, 5th grade math or 5th grade science. In order to

attend students were identified as candidates and pre-registered by their base school. The

elementary components of Take Two will be housed at Hillandale Elementary and Creekside

Elementary. Dates for the camp are June 14-24 with our instructional day beginning at 9:00 a.m.

and concluding at 3:00 p.m. Transportation and meals are provided.

Operation Literacy: Mission Possible!: In preparation for the Read to Achieve Gateway and

accelerated academic success, Operation Literacy: Mission Possible specifically targets

kindergarten readiness, as well as reading needs and deficits, for rising kindergarten and first

grade students. This intensive four week gateway experience serves students who currently

attend the following elementary schools: Bethesda, Glenn, Merrick-Moore, Oak Grove, and

Spring Valley. Operation Literacy will be offered June 20 - July 14, 2016, Monday - Thursday,

9:00 a.m. - 3:45 pm at Merrick-Moore Elementary School. Transportation and meals are

provided.

Project RAISE 21st Century Summer Camp: Project RAISE provides enrichment activities

and hands-on math and science sessions during the summer for children of all backgrounds and

physical and intellectual abilities. Students work in small group activities with teachers and

youth development workers. In addition to receiving academic support through math and

science, students participate in physical activities, interact with local visitors to increase

awareness of the STEM field, and participate in field trips and other explorations as planned for

the summer. The program’s overall goal is to improve student proficiency in all subjects by the

end of camp through the implementation of unique hands-on learning experiences.

English as a Second Language Academy*: The three week ESL Academy will target ELLs

who are within the first three years in US schools. The academies will run Monday through

Friday with the focus on project-based learning, as well as accelerated English, math and

technology instruction, supports the attainment of real-life experiences. Students will grow in

both social and academic English. NOTE: ESL Academy will be offered at Forest View and Holt

sites only with transportation offered to the Read to Achieve summer camp feeder schools only.

Extended School Year* (ESY): The Extended School Year (ESY) services, provided by the

Exceptional Children’s Department, offers educational services to qualifying students with

disabilities who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Eligibility for ESY services is

determined by IEP teams only. (There is no application process.) IEP teams evaluate data on

student progress related to retention and recoupment of skills and critical emerging skills.

Students who qualify receive individualized services, which focus instruction on specific IEP

goals for each student. The parent of each qualifying student will receive a letter outlining their

child’s individualized ESY service delivery dates, times and location.

DPS/Duke TIP Adventures in STEM: Adventures in STEM is a free one-day academic

enrichment program for gifted Durham fifth and sixth graders who qualify for TIP and are

interested in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math. This one day adventure is full of

advanced, hands-on academic instruction in today’s most vital fields. Thanks to a grant from

Longfellow Real Estate Partners, this special program from the Duke Talent Identification

Program is free to academically talented fifth and sixth graders living in Durham County.

Qualifying students will be able to choose a course of special interest to them on one of three

dates when applications open in late April.

Legal Eagle Law Camp - Legal Eagle Law Camp is co-sponsored by Community Education &

Family Engagement and North Carolina Central University School of Law. The goal of the

camp is to offer participants exposure to the field of law. The camp is for rising 7th- 10th

graders and is limited to the first thirty-six participants who register. The camp will be held at

NCCU School of Law June 27- July 1 from 9am - 4pm. Brochures and registration forms are

located on the Before & After-school website.

Community Education Traditional Camp - Community Education & Family Engagement will

offer traditional full day camps for rising 1st -6th graders at Eno Valley, Spring Valley and WG

Pearson. Camps will be held June 15 - August 12 from 7am - 6pm, Monday-Friday. Students

will participate in weekly field trips, resources and much more. Students will receive breakfast

and lunch. Brochures and registration forms are located on the Before & After-school website.

Community Education Specialty Camp - Community Education & Family Engagement will

offer an exciting array of Specialty Camps for rising 1st -6th graders this summer! Classes will

be offered Monday-Friday from 8-12pm or 12:30-4:30pm at Creekside, Morehead, Hillandale

and WG Pearson. The following camps will be offered: Karate for Beginners, Mallets &

Strings, I Like to Move it, Music Marvel, Play It Up, Let It Soar, Fit 4 All, Fitness Through

Sports, D.R.I.V.E Academy, Celebrate, Bricks 4 Kids, Young Rembrandts, Jamming with Drums

and Weaving It Wild. Students must be registered for all classes by June 10. Camp descriptions,

brochures and registration forms are located on the Before & After-school website.

Read to Achieve*: The goal of the Read to Achieve program is to ensure that every student

reads at or above grade level by the end of third grade, thus enabling him/her to meet the third

grade promotion standards. This twelve day, district-wide reading camp provides targeted

literacy instruction for first through third grade students who do not meet the standard grade

level reading proficiency as indicated on the North Carolina Third Grade End of Grade (EOG)

reading test or mCLASS: Reading 3D Text Reading and Comprehension (TRC) assessment (first

and second grade students).

Project What I Need (WIN)*: Project WIN is a full-day three week camp that serves rising pre-

kindergarten, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students at our Project WIN schools.

The goal is to provide early learning experiences that will enhance student success. Rising

kindergarten through second-grade students will focus on previewing literacy standards and

skills using engaging, high inter-promotion standards.

*Applications are not provided for these camps due to specific programmatic restrictions. Please

communicate with the camp contact for more information.

Take Two: Elementary Grades EOG Re-administration

The Take Two Summer Program is a nine day camp in which students receive additional

instruction and an opportunity for re-administration of the EOG in 4th grade math, 5th grade

math or 5th grade science. Students were identified as potential candidates for this program,

utilizing EVAAS data and Case 21 Benchmark scores. In order to attend, students must have

been pre-registered by their base school.

Schools will receive updated registration lists to verify student names, addresses, PowerSchool

numbers, and EC, ESL, or 504 testing accommodations. Students who make proficiency on 4th

or 5th math or 5th science will need to be removed from the registration list within 24 hours of

receipt of testing scores. Schools will receive packets to send home with students who are

registered and qualify for the Take 2 Program during the last week of school with information

about camp site assignment, bus number, pick-up/drop-off times, and general camp information.

Schools’ Operation Literacy: Mission Possible summer learning opportunity at Merrick-Moore

Elementary School. This is a FREE intensive four week summer camp that specifically targets

kindergarten readiness, as well as reading needs and deficits, in preparation for the Read to

Achieve gateway and accelerated academic success. Operation Literacy: Mission Possible will

be held from June 20-July 14, 2016. Students will report daily Monday through Thursday from

9:00 am - 3:45 pm. Transportation, breakfast, lunch, and a light snack will be provided. All your

child has to do is report on time daily ready to learn and we will take care of the rest.

A transportation schedule with approximate pick up/drop off times will be provided for all

students prior to the last day of school. Copies of the transportation schedule will be available at

the front office in your base school and can be viewed at the DPS website located at

www.dpsnc.net.

This is an excellent opportunity for your student to get ready for kindergarten, improve his/her

literacy skills, and further support overall academic success. We do not want you to miss out!

school no later than Tuesday, May 10, 2016, we will get your child registered and provide you

Project RAISE: 21st Century Summer Camp

Project RAISE (Reading Achievement Improves STEM Excellence) Durham Public Schools is

offering a five week STEAM Summer Camp for rising 2nd-5th grade students in the 21st

Century Community Learning Centers Programs at Fayetteville Street and WG Pearson

Elementary. STEAM Education is an infusion of Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and

Mathematics through project-based learning to help students understand complex problems and

to prepare our next generation of innovators. Students will be exposed to 21st century skills such

as communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. There will also be

enrichment activities that promote good health and social interaction. Activities and field trips

are planned to complement Science themes and cultural experiences.

Camp Location: Fayetteville Street Elementary School

Dates: June 20th—July 21st, 2016 Days: Monday-Thursday Times: 9am-3pm

Tuition, Field trips, Activities, Food and Snacks – FREE! All fees are covered through 21st

CCLC grant funds for participants.

Transportation: Transportation will be provided for students who live within close proximity to

Fayetteville Street Elementary. Pick-up and Drop-Off times will be provided for each stop.

**Transportation is limited due to grant funds. **Bus Riders Dismissed at 3:00pm

**Current 21st CCLC program students have first priority; however, other registration will be

accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all 160 slots are filled. Once your child’s

registration has been accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter with program information.

Parents and students must attend the student-parent orientation prior to the start of camp.

Las escuelas públicas de Durham ofrecen un campamento de verano STEAM de cinco semanas

Extended School Year

Eligibility for ESY services is determined by IEP teams only. Therefore, there is no application

process. The parent of each qualifying student will receive a letter outlining their child’s

individualized ESY service delivery dates, times and location based on what services the student

qualifies for.

DPS/Duke TIP Adventures in STEM

Duke TIP/Adventures in STEM application in Spanish and English

Through a partnership with Duke TIP and a grant from Longfellow Associates, three Duke TIP

Saturday sessions are being offered with creative topics students will choose to participate in

such as: Nature vs. Nurture, Tech That Works: Introduction to User Experience Design, DNA:

Discovering the Double Helix, Sports Medicine, and others that will enrich students’ minds.

Students in grades 5 and 6 who have qualifying Duke TIP scores are eligible.

SPARK Camp for AIG Students

SPARK Summer Program Accelerating Radical Kids- Camp brochure - Beth Cross (FULL)

This is a camp for gifted students in Durham Public Schools, grades 4-8. During the four days,

students choose two sessions of interest as well as participate in enrichment sessions each day.

Legal Eagle Law Camp

Legal Eagle Law Camp is co-sponsored by Community Education & Family Engagement and

North Carolina Central University School of Law. The goal of the camp is to offer participants

exposure to the field of law. The camp is for rising 7th- 10th graders and is limited to the first

thirty-six participants who register. The camp will be held at NCCU School of Law June 27-

July 1 from 9am - 4pm. Brochures and registration forms are located on the Before & After-

Community Education Traditional Camp

Community Education & Family Engagement will offer traditional full day camps for rising 1st -

6th graders at Eno Valley, Spring Valley and WG Pearson. Camps will be held June 15 - August

12 from 7am - 6pm, Monday-Friday. Students will participate in weekly field trips, resources

and much more. Students will receive breakfast and lunch. Brochures and registration forms are

Community Education Specialty Camp

Community Education & Family Engagement will offer an exciting array of Specialty Camps for

rising 1st -6th graders this summer! Classes will be offered Monday-Friday from 8-12pm or

12:30-4:30pm at Creekside, Morehead, Hillandale and WG Pearson. The following camps will

be offered: Karate for Beginners, Mallets & Strings, I Like to Move it, Music Marvel, Play It

Up, Let It Soar, Fit 4 All, Fitness Through Sports, D.R.I.V.E Academy, Celebrate, Bricks 4 Kids,

Young Rembrandts, Jamming with Drums and Weaving It Wild. Students must be registered for
