Recreation Unlimited is one of Ohio’s largest providers of sports, recreation and education programs for individuals with disabilities and health concerns. In 2011, the request for camp participation exceeded available openings with wait lists for both summer residential and summer day camps. Recreation Unlimited added additional camp openings due to this high demand. Over 690 campers participated in the Summer Residential, Summer Specialty and Summer Day camp programs that started in June and ran through August. “We are pleased that we had a wonderful summer that was fun and safe for all participants,” said Paul Huttlin, Executive Director & CEO. “As long as we have the funding and staffing we will continue to grow our camps and serve individuals with disabilities and health concerns.” Recreation Unlimited Summer Residential camps began with a weeklong camp for indi- viduals with Prader-Willi Syndrome the week of June 6-10. Followed by the Summer Residential camp program (including Camp Firebird and Greif week), which started July 4th and ran through August 19th. There were three weeklong camps for youth (8-22), and four weeklong camps for adults (23 & up). Summer Day camps began July 11th and ran through August 12th. These camps are open to youth and teens (5-19) with disabilities, as well as their typically developing friends and siblings. “This is a place where I can be myself and not feel that I must live up to everyone’s expectations,” said Kristin, a camper who attended Summer Day camp. All campers benefited from accessible facili- ties, including the 20,000 sq. ft. Life Center, the new Aquatic Playground, and customized programs with access to lodging, meals, health care and a myriad of sports, recreation, and education activities. Camper-to-counselor ratios are two campers to every one counselor and in some cases one to one. “The recruiting for camp counselors and program leaders was very successful,” said Chris Link, Recreation Unlimited Farm and Fun Operations Manager. “We are very pleased that there are so many caring individuals in the community who wish to serve individuals with disabilities and health concerns.” Remember, it is important for campers to register early for a Recreation Unlimited camp in order to reserve their spot. The complete 2012 camp schedule will be released during the month of October 2011 and will be posted on the Recreation Unlimited website at www.recreationunlimited.org. The 2012 Summer Residential camp registration form will be mailed and posted on the website in late January. In addition, we have seen the growth of our endowed scholarships in support of the Summer Residential and Year Round Respite Weekend camps scholarship program. Currently, we have ten endowed scholarships and hope to continue with adding more in 2012. Year round programs are growing and new camps are continuing to be created. However, we still have many campers on wait lists and support through the Medicaid Waiver program is being reduced, so our work continues. Residence Hall(s) Renovation ProjectThe Recreation Unlimited campus was opened in 1989 and encompassed three major resi-dence halls with a total capacity of 186. These residence halls have been well maintainedover the years. However, they are in need of extensive renovation in order to maintain anenvironment that is useful, durable, low maintenance, and energy efficient. The residencehalls need to maintain accessibility and remainpleasing and functional to the campers, partici-pants, and Recreation Unlimited Associates whowill utilize them throughout the year.

Many of the building components are at the endof their life cycle. Others need to be replaced tobetter serve building users and those who main-tain them. Therefore, the project will encompassfive major areas of renovation that will improveweatherizing, systems, accessibility, interior func-tion and décor.

The goal for construction is to renovate one resi-dence hall a year starting in 2011 through 2013 atan investment budget of $275,000 each. Due toan anonymous donation, the project will be initi-ated fall 2011 and will target Residence Hall B. Foradditional information regarding donations to theResidence Hall(s) Renovation Project, please contact Recreation Unlimited Foundation at(740) 548-7006 or email [email protected].
