We have accomplished much so far this year and there is still more coming! Read on for a general overview of what's going on. Great Events On Tap On October 1st, we will hold our second annual Financial Planning Day at Benjamin Franklin High School, 550 North Broad Street in Philadelphia. We need volunteers, especially Spanish speaking planners. If you would like to volunteer, visit www.FinancialPlanningDays.org/PhiladelphiaVolunteer to register. On October 5th, we will jointly present Financial Service Super Day with NAIFA of Greater Philadelphia. It is a full day of great programs, and it will be held at the Double Tree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting. On October 17th, we will host our annual Fall Retreat which is the perfect balance of continuing education and great fun. On November 16th, we will have our last member meeting for 2011. See our website for more information about all of these events. Financials Are Strong As you may know, funding for our chapter comes from three sources: sponsors (thank you sponsors), registration fees from our events, and we receive a small portion of the dues our members pay for their National FPA membership. I am pleased to report that we have established a reserve equal to slightly more than one year's worth of chapter expenses. This amount of reserve is commonly viewed as appropriate for responsible fiscal policy in non-profit organizations. Our finan- cials are available to members upon request. Succession Plan in Place In early September, the board voted on the 2012 slate of officers. In our chapter, the membership elects the board of directors and the board of directors elects the officers. We have a nice mix of returning officers and directors and some new ones as well. Bottom line-our chapter is in great hands for 2012 and beyond. Challenges The Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter is known among other chapters as the chapter that speaks its mind and doesn't mince words. We wear that reputation with pride, and in that vane, how could I write about our successes without writing about our challenges? Yes, membership has declined since the market peaked in 2007, but that really hasn't been our greatest concern. So what keeps us up at night? Our members keep us up at night! Are they happy? Do they like our CE offerings? Do they want more social events? We know from our 2009 member survey that our involved members are happy members. So, how do we get more members involved? Will you help us? We have so many opportunities to get involved, from pro bono, to educational programs, to working on the website, to increasing the public's awareness of what we do. We have small projects that will only take an hour or two of your time, or we have larger projects that will allow you to really shine. Not much experience in the industry? No problem. Bring fresh eyes and fresh ideas, and in return you will have one heck of a great accomplishment to put on your resume! Come to our member meetings. Don't know anyone? You will. We have a “No One Stands Alone” poli- cy. Come on out and you will be glad you did. If I can help or answer any questions, please don't hesitate to call or e-mail me. Human Resources By: William G. Love, CFP®

Vice President, Human Resources

To our fellow FPA Philadelphia Tri-State members:

Our message continues to be “we are at your service.”

The message of being at your service is what we as planners live by in serving our clients. As youread this newsletter, we encourage you to pause and reflect on the recent events that have takenplace. We have had an earthquake, hurricane and extreme volatility in the stock market. These

uncontrollable events are difficult for us planners to sort out and then properly advise our clients on how to bestnavigate through. However, one way to decrease some of the difficulty is to exchange ideas with one another.

Below are some of the ways that we can come together as a community and share ideas:

• Study groups• Online discussions• Blogs• Quarterly meetings• Reach out to another member via email, phone, etc.

Our hope is that you take advantage of some of the avenues men-tioned. We believe that it is not just our responsibility to be of serv-ice to our clients, but we must also be of service to ourselves.

It is like when the airline steward instructs all parents to put the oxygen mask on themselves before putting it ontheir children. We need to do the same!

We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting for some oxygen.

Continued success,

Education Report By: John Kilroy, CFP®, CPAVice President, Education

Fall Retreat - Do Ethics and Golf Really Mix?

As it is our custom, we invite one and all to share in our chapter's retreat. This year, the combination of morning education and afternoon golf will beheld at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware on Monday, October 17th.

To make sure everyone is in the right frame of mind for golf, we will beginthe day with our friend Joel Weiner and his two hour ethics presentation. This year Joel will famil-iarize everyone through a series of interactive case studies with the recent changes in the ethicsrequirement mandated by the CFP® board. While you may not get the chance to be the rules guyin our golf outing, you could serve in that role in Joel's session.

If you have already fulfilled your ethics requirement, we are offering two breakout sessions for youto begin the day. The first will focus on enhancing your communication skills, especially that peskylistening skill. Shari Harley has spoken to audiences around the world to many organizations andcompanies and will share her experiences with us. Shari will be followed by Matthew Gorke. IfMatthew's name does not sound familiar to you, I'm sure it will by the end of his presentation as hewill be assisting all of us in an area where I suspect we could all benefit - strengthening our memory. We believe the combination of Shari and Matthew will provide a unique experience for all.

After you visit with our sponsors, the educationportion of the day ends with....education! Betterstated, we are pleased to welcome Joe Hurleywho is widely regarded as the foremost educationplanning expert in the country. Joe will offer insighton the latest developments affecting educationfunding alternatives derived from his extensiveresearch and his vast supply of anecdotal exam-ples.

The afternoon will offer its own challenges as weestablish our relationship with, gather data on,analyze and develop strategy around, and imple-ment and monitor each shot taken over 18 holesat DuPont. Have fun!

The Philadelphia 2nd Annual Financial Planning Day

Saturday, October 1st 10:30AM to 3:30PMBen Franklin High School

550 N. Broad StreetPhiladelphia, PA 19130

Our “big day” – Financial Planning Day – is quickly approaching and we would love for you to be a partof it. This is an opportunity to acquaint the public with financial planning professionals and the work wedo for our group to give back to the community. Like last year, we will have planners on hand to provideone-on-one counseling sessions and we will have a number of speakers. We expect this event to drawa big crowd – we are getting the word out earlier than last year and the Mayor’s office has really gottenbehind this event.

We have a number of presentations scheduled on the following topics: Managing Credit, Budgeting 101,Saving for College, Retirement and Investing, Finding Money and Resources for Elder-care, andForeclosure Prevention. At this point, we have all the speakers we need for this year's event, but if youare interested in speaking at next year's Financial Planning Day, please email Sharon Bonnem ([email protected]) with a brief description of the topic. We would love to take advantage of your expert-ise and expand the topics.

We observed things that worked – and didn’t work – about last year’s events and made several changesto make the event flow more smoothly – better signage, a later starting time (moved from 9AM to10:30AM) and we’ll even have better food for the volunteers!

The questions and concerns that most attendees have center on basics such as cash flow, savings, anddebt. We will have volunteers from Consumer Credit Counseling Services on hand for the more com-plicated debt management issues, as well as a representative of the Philadelphia Council for CommunityAdvancement to answer questions and discuss solutions to mortgage delinquency.

In addition to connecting to the public, this is a great way to connect to your fellow planners. We areplanning a volunteer appreciation event for later this year so you will have the opportunity to reconnectwith your fellow volunteers and share your experiences.

We need you. If you haven’t yet signed up, please visit: http://www.financialplanningdays.org/Content/cityselectstep2.aspx?City=Philadelphia&rt=CFPand click on the registration link.

Mark your calendars and save November 30th for our Media Training and Volunteer appreciation eventat The Union League in Philadelphia. Details to follow after Financial Planning Day.

Thank you!
