Confession and Forgiveness (Based on Ps. 32 & Romans 3)

Pastor: Psalm 32 says, “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are

covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them…”

Today we lay our sins before our Heavenly Father trusting in His grace to cover over

our guilt and shame.

People: Heavenly Father we admit to You that we have not lived holy lives. We have

broken your commands. We have turned from Your ways. We have not loved

You, or our neighbor, as we should. We deserve Your punishment but we seek

Your mercy. Forgive us and renew us for the sake of Jesus our Savior.

(We observe a few moments of quiet time as we personally bring before Jesus

our need for his forgiveness; examining our lives in light of God’s Word.)

Assurance of Forgiveness

Pastor: The Bible declares that “God presented Jesus Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,

through the shedding of his blood – to be received by faith.” (Rom. 3:25) Your sins,

therefore, have been covered over and you are fully forgiven in the name of the

Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Rejoice that you are at one with the

Father as His beloved son or daughter.

People: Amen

(Please be seated)

Song of Response “At the Cross”

Verse 1

Oh Lord, You've searched me. You know my way.

Even when I fail You, I know You love me.

Verse 2

Your holy presence, surrounding me.

In every season, I know You love me.

I know You love me.

Chorus 1

At the cross I bow my knee, where Your blood was shed for me.

There's no greater love than this.

You have overcome the grave. Your glory fills the highest place.

What can separate me now?

Verse 3

You go before me, You shield my way.

Your hand upholds me. I know You love me.

Chorus 1

Bridge

You tore the veil, You made a way,

when You said that It is done.

You tore the veil, You made a way,

when You said that It is done.

Verse 4

And when the earth fades, falls from my eyes.

And You stand before me, I know You love me.

I know You love me.

The Old Testament Lesson Leviticus 16:1-22

(The Day of Atonement)

The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they

approached the Lord. The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come

whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement

cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.

This is how Aaron is to enter the Most Holy Place: He must first bring a young bull for a sin

offering and a ram for a burnt offering. He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen

undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban.

These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on. From the

Israelite community he is to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his

household. Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the entrance to

the tent of meeting. He is to cast lots for the two goats—one lot for the LORD and the other for the

scapegoat. Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the LORD and sacrifice it for a sin

offering. But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to

be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat. Aaron shall bring

the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to

slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the

altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind

the curtain. He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the smoke of the incense will

conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die. He is to

take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover;

then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover. He shall

then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and

do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front

of it. In this way he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the uncleanness and

rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the tent of

meeting, which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness. No one is to be in the tent of

meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes

out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel. Then

he shall come out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He shall take

some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar. He

shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it

from the uncleanness of the Israelites. When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most

Holy Place, the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat. He is to lay both

hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the

Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the

wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their

sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness.

The Gospel Lesson Matthew 27:45-54

(The Death of Jesus)

From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the

afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God,

my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing there heard this, they said,

“He’s calling Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine

vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone.

Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he

gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who

had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into

the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were

guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed,

“Surely he was the Son of God!”

Song of the Day “The New Song We Sing”

Verse 1

You are the God Who reconciles the wayward heart through Christ.

The old has gone, the new has come; We are reconciled by love,

We are reconciled by love. (REPEAT)

Chorus 1 And this is the new song we sing to the King of heaven.

This is the new song we bring after all You've given.

And we stand before You redeemed as Your children.

This is the new song we sing.

Verse 2 We who were once so far away are brought near by Your blood.

The barrier has been destroyed; By Your grace we freely come,

by Your grace we freely come.

Chorus 1

Bridge We live in You. We live for You. We live to You, our King.

We stand in You. We stand for You. We stand as Your redeemed. (REPEAT)

Your redeemed.

† The Celebration of Holy Communion †

Words of Institution

The Sharing of Peace Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you all.

People: And also with you.

The Distribution of the Sacrament Today we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion. Baptized Christians who can answer

YES to the following questions are welcome to join us at the Lord’s Table.

Do you admit you have sinned against God and do you repent (admit and turn away

from) of those sins?

Do you trust in Jesus Christ and Him alone as your Savior from sin and death?

Do you believe that the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ is actually received in and

with the bread and wine (the bread and wine are not merely symbols or signs) for the

forgiveness of your sins and to strengthen your faith?

Do you believe that in Holy Communion we personally receive the gift of God’s

forgiving love and grace and we experience oneness with Christ and with one

another?

Do you intend and desire, by God’s power, to turn away from your sin, and to grow in

love for God and for others?

If this is your faith we invite you to join us at the Lord’s Table. If you have questions, concerns,

doubts, etc. please speak with a pastor, or an Elder, before receiving Holy Communion. We ask

that children receive formal instruction in the meaning and purpose of Holy Communion

through our 1st Communion Class or Confirmation program before participating in this

sacrament. For those who are sensitive to alcohol, we offer non-alcoholic wine for Holy

Communion. The non-alcoholic wine is located in the middle of the communion trays.

Communion Song “At the Cross (Love Ran Red)”

Verse 1

There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies,

there's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide;

Pre-Chorus

Where all the love I've ever found

comes like a flood, comes flowing down.

Chorus

At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life.

I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You.

Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white.

I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus.

Verse 2

There's a place where sin and shame are powerless,

where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness;

Pre-Chorus

Chorus 1a

At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life.

I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You.

Where Your love ran red, and my sin washed white.

Bridge

Here my hope is found, here on holy ground;

Here I bow down, here I bow down.

Here, arms open wide, here You saved my life;

Here I bow down, here I bow.

“Holy Spirit, Living Breath of Life”

Verse 1

Holy Spirit, living Breath of God,

breathe new life into my willing soul.

Let the presence of the risen Lord

come renew my heart and make me whole.

Cause Your word to come alive in me;

Give me faith for what I cannot see,

give me passion for Your purity;

Holy Spirit breathe new life in me.

Verse 2

Holy Spirit, come abide within,

may Your joy be seen in all I do.

Love enough to cover ev'ry sin,

in each thought and deed and attitude.

Kindness to the greatest and the least,

gentleness that sows the path of peace.

Turn my strivings into works of grace;

Breath of God show Christ in all I do.

Verse 3

Holy Spirit, from creation's birth,

giving life to all that God has made,

show Your power once again on earth,

cause Your church to hunger for Your ways.

Let the fragrance of our pray'rs arise;

Lead us on the road of sacrifice,

that in unity the face of Christ

may be clear for all the world to see.
