DON’T BE LEFT OUT
The psalm for December 31 (Psalm 96:1) proclaims that the earth is singing a “new”
song. Creation is still proclaiming His sal-vation and awaiting Jesus’ return. Guess what? You are part of that creation and this means that you are called to join in the praise of God. · As you stand on the cusp of a new year,
ask God to give you the gift of praise. · Resolve this year to explore what it
means to join creation in worshipping the Lord.
· Read a different psalm aloud slowly eve-ry day, letting the words fill your heart.
· Take time each day to recall the bless-ings you’ve received or take a moment to see the beauty in the world around you.
· Join in the chorus of praise that is well-ing up all around us!
“God of the Universe, You are the source of all joy. Give me a heart of praise in the coming year, so that Your joy can become my very strength!”

Representatives from the Knights will be with us in January to discuss bringing such a group to our parish. They will explain how a lo-cal council is in a partnership with the New York State Council and with the main (Supreme) coun-cil in New Haven, Ct. BACK TO BASICS
(Baltimore Catechism) On Sin and Its Kinds
38. Q. Is original sin the only kind of sin?
A. Original sin is not the only kind of sin; there is another kind of sin, which we commit ourselves, called actual sin.
39. Q. What is actual sin?
A. Actual sin is any willful thought, word, deed or omission contrary to the law of God. 40. Q. How many kinds of actual sin are there?
A. There are two kinds of actual sin—mortal and venial. 41. Q. What is mortal sin?
A. Mortal sin is a grievous offense against the law of God.
42. Q. What is a venial sin?
A. Venial sin is a slight offense against the law of God
in matters of less importance; or in matters of great importance it is an offence committed without sufficient reflection or full consent of the will. 43. Q. Which are the chief sources of sin?
A. The chief sources of sin are seven: Pride, Covetous-
ness, Lust, Anger, Gluttony, Envy, and Sloth; and they are commonly called capital sins.
HAPPY FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
DECEMBER 30
(OUR FEAST DAY) Carl Jung said, “The little world of childhood….is a model of the greater world.” He added that when children leave home, they carry a certain “imprint” of family life. In Jung’s words, “The more intensively the family has stamped its character upon the child, the more it will tend to feel and see its earlier miniature world again in the big-ger world of adult life.” Jesus settled into that “miniature world” of His home at Nazareth. What a compliment to Mary and Joseph it is to think that what Jesus became in His adult life was a result of the “character” they imprint-ed on Him earlier. Today, we celebrate the staggering fact of God’s willingness actually to become one of us. Fri-day’s feast reinforces that truth and reminds us that Jesus experienced all the joys and sorrows of family life, taking what we all have in common and giving it uncommon sanctity.
FOR YOUR FAMILY
“The family is the privileged setting where every person learns to give and receive love. The fami-ly is an intermediate institution between individ-uals and society, and nothing can completely take its place. The family is a necessary good for peo-ples, an indispensable foundation for society and a great and lifelong treasure for couples. It is a unique good for children, who are meant to be the fruit of love, of the total and generous self-giving of their parents. The family is also a school which enables men and women to grow to the full measure of their humanity.” Pope Benedict XVI
IN AN UNEXPECTED WAY
How many of those shepherds were truly await-ing the Messiah? I am sure for some of the Jews at that time, the ancient promise made to David that his kingdom would last for ever through one of his descendants, was seen as a quaint tradition, but not something that was really to be expected. That kind of hope was for children and religious types. The angels intruded into this reality, this lethargy, with their announcement that salvation is now and salvation is present. The baby in the manger can be seen by anyone with eyes to see and with even the slightest curiosity, the slightest willingness to risk himself by displaying a little hope. Are you awaiting the Messiah? Do you believe that Jesus is real, or is he just the subject of a quaint tradition, a comfortable childhood memory? What you need, what all Christians need over and over again, is that Christ break through your lethargy and show Himself in a way that you can recognize, in a way that can surprise you. On this Christmas day, take a risk; have a little hope and beg, “Come Lord Jesus! Show me that you are present now.” The shepherds were probably not expecting a baby in a manger. Be ready to welcome Him in the unexpected way He will come to you.
Reflection based on Luke 2:1-14
