May 5 Children’s Musical and Pancake Breakfast

Valley Youth and Clippers Mariners will serve a delicious pancake breakfast for Youth Mission and Triennium during morning hours on Sunday, May 5, and the King’s Kids choir will present a musical during worship (sermon in song) on the same day. “Technicolor Promise” is the story of

Noah’s Ark. The children’s beautiful voices will remind you of the what the rainbow symbolizes: “…a covenant that God almighty made so long ago...a bond of love from up above to let all people know...a sacred sign to human kind...God signifies our worth!” See page 6 for more information

We are proud to announce that the Sanctuary lift installation is complete in the space where a ramp was previously located. The Facilities Committee thanks Gary Rawlings, who acted as our general contractor for the project; George Reichard, who was the driving force behind the project; the Presbytery of the Cascades for their generous grant, and all those who contributed to the Lift Fund. Please stop by before or after Sunday worship to observe how well it performs in making it easy for those who need assistance moving from the Fireside Room level to the Sanctuary level. Team Valley Participated in CROP Walk Thank you to all who were part of Team Valley in the recent CROP Hunger Walk in downtown Portland. Walkers, Spirit Walkers and Donors were all helpful. We couldn’t have done it without you! By the time we left for the CROP Walk on Sunday afternoon, April 28, we had collected $1,154 and we were 32 strong at the walk! If you still would like to donate for this year’s walk, you may give donations to Andrea during Coffee Fellowship, or you may turn checks in to the church office. Checks should be made out to “CWS/CROP.”

The annual walks organized by Church World Service in many cities collect funds to fight hunger “one step at a time.” (see photos on p. 9) Other Mission events this month include the Habitat for Humanity Build Day on Saturday, May 4th and a collection of baby clothing and supplies during coffee fellowship on Sundays in May (see Mission, p. 3).

Session Highlights

March Finance Report

At the April 9 regular meeting, Valley’s Session: Approved painting the Children's Sunday School hallway based on drawings provided by the Christian Nurture

Committee. Appointed Elder Carol Powers to serve as Clerk of Session for one year beginning June 2013. Approved the following Mission collections: 1) a baby and toddler collection in May to benefit the Letty Owings

Center (see Mission p. 3); 2) a “Giving Palm Tree” collection during Vacation Bible School in July to benefit the Sunshine Pantry, and 3) a Pentecost offering May 19 to benefit youth and young adult ministries and at risk children.

Commendations were given to Marcia Sanderman and Ruthann Marquis for helping to provide the April First Tuesday meal; Marie Bird and all those who worked on making The Messenger digital; Donna Rueff for coordinating nursery volunteers, and Kerrie Standlee and Mary Collins for getting new blinds installed at the Youth House residence.

Celebrating the birthday of the Church and the coming of the Holy Spirit, we will observe Pentecost with Christians around the world on Sunday, May 19. As part of the celebration, all who attend worship are encouraged to wear red and/or orange, the colors of the tongues of fire that represent the Holy Spirit. Our children are also encouraged to help with a procession including waving red and orange ribbons. All children (and their parents) are invited to meet Kay Gold in the Fireside Room at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and ribbon practice for the procession in worship. Our Youth Choir will lead our music, as it is also Graduate Recognition Sunday when we will honor all of our High School Seniors who are preparing to graduate. A reception hosted by the Christian Nurture Committee will be held in the Seniors’ honor following worship. During worship we will also collect the Pentecost Offering, one of the four Special Offerings supported by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). This is the first year Valley has collected the Pentecost Offering, but it is in the same category as the Peacemaking Offering, Christmas Joy Offering, and the One Great Hour of Sharing. The Pentecost Offering makes

it possible for the church to encourage, develop, and support its young people, and address the needs of at-risk children. Up to 40% of this offering can be retained by our congregation to make an impact in the lives of young people within our local community. The national offering supports Young Adult Volunteers, Ministries for Youth, and Child Advocacy. To give $10 now, text YOUNG to 20222. Operating results for the first three months of 2013 continue to be positive, with revenues exceeding expenses by $10,000 and March operations providing a surplus of $5,300. The operating success is due to a combination of actual adult giving

exceeding the budgeted amount and program expenses continuing to be under budget each month in most areas. The 2013 pledge drive is still continuing, and as of April 17, 2013, pledges trail those of 2012 by $23,000. It will assist session greatly, even though the budget is passed, if that gap could be reduced to add certainty to the total of estimated adult giving, which constitutes 78% of total revenue. Dedicated shawl knitters continue to be an active outreach arm of Valley. In May we celebrated our eighth anniversary. Our total “gifted” shawls have now reached 784. Many thanks to all the women who continue to be actively involved in this ministry and give abundantly of their time and talents. Everyone can help with this project. If you know of someone having health issues, a death in the family, something to celebrate, or who just needs to know someone cares, let us know. We meet on fourth Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. at the church and 7:00 p.m. at my house. We always welcome new friends. Marilyn Tuffs

Dining for Women at Valley will travel (in spirit) to Guatemala at their May meeting on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. This group that normally meets

after church on the third Sunday of each month is holding an evening meeting in Armitage Hall once a quarter this year. This way, if staying after church doesn’t work for you, maybe the evening meetings will. The featured non-profit this month is Maya Works. It is about creating work for women so that they become self-sufficient. Giving women an opportunity to earn an income from their skills gives them self-confidence and hope for themselves, their children, their family and their village. We will have a guest speaker who is a volunteer for Maya Works and who lives in the area. Please bring an open ear to learn about the needs of these women, prepare a potluck dish to share for the meal and consider a donation to support the work of Maya Works. Baby and Toddler Collection in May Valley’s Mission Committee will be collecting needed items for babies and toddlers at the Mission Table during Sunday coffee fellowship through the month of May. Needed: New and gently used clothing, shoes, strollers, and high chairs; new car seats; new or opened packages of diapers; new blankets, bedding, pacifiers, baby wipes, bottles and baby/toddler toys. Unopened baby food (glass jars OK) and formula. (No used car seats or toys.) The items will be given to the Letty Owings Center in NE Portland. Letty, an active Presbyterian woman, partnered with Nancy Anderson, current Director of LOC, in 1989. Their goal was to provide a Recovery Center for women and their young children, “To break the chain of addiction one family at a time.” Now, 24 years later, more than 1,300 women and 237 (and counting) drug free newborns have completed this program. Through the years, LOC has added GED programs, work incentives for job histories and the Sunshine Housing Development. It's more than recovery; it’s a life style change that makes this program work! Children’s Ministries Valley’s Pre-K children through Fourth Grade have been learning about Pentecost (Greek for 50th Day and also a holiday in the Jewish calendar, the 50th day after Passover). The Disciples were gathered in the temple on that First Pentecost after Christ’s Resurrection, and as recorded in Acts 2, were suddenly filled with the Holy Spirit. Then Peter stood up to address the crowd. On that day 3,000 accepted his message and became believers. Christians consider Pentecost to be the birthday of the Church. Kindergarten through Fourth Grade leaders were Amy Henning-Blair, Glenys

Craig, Lynne Fowler, Richard Gold, Beverly Hubbard, Amy Rheingans, Dan and Katherine Rinella and Kay Hope Gold. Pre-K Sunday School children have been shepherded by Craig and Terri Vermillion, Bert and Cheryl Hoffbeck and Paul and Lizz Brown.

We still have some critical volunteer positions to fill as Classroom Leaders for Vacation Bible School. No previous experience is required. Registration

forms are streaming in. We don’t want to have to turn any child away due to lack of adult volunteers. Please

Summer Camps Encourage Creativity Music and Drama Camp June 24-28 This popular camp is for children entering the 2nd through 7th grades for the 2013/2014 school year. The campers will put together a musical over the course of the week and perform it at a retirement home at the end of the week as well as during Sunday worship on June 30. Other features of this camp include drama games, a talent show, making new friends, scooter time in the gym, artistic endeavors through scenery/poster making and a field trip to perform the play at Beaverton Lodge Retirement Home. Dates: June 24-28 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ages: 2nd through 7th grades for the 2013/2014 school year Cost: $155 per camper Arts Exploration Camp July 8-12 This is the afternoon camp during the week of Vacation Bible School, however, children can be registered in this camp even if they are not participating in VBS. This camp is for all children entering the 1st through 5th grades for the 2013/2014 school year. During Arts Exploration Camp, children will explore various artistic media, create many different pieces of art, develop musical skills through singing games and music instruction, and explore acting through drama games and creative dramatic activities. Valley Christian Preschool April showers have not kept us indoors… well, not too much, anyway. We play outside whenever we can in our wonderful preschool playground. In April we also had fun exploring a patrol car and learning about police work thanks to (preschool parent) Officer Bryan Sheldon, and we decorated with flowers as we celebrated the women in our students’ lives during our annual Someone Special Tea. Our goal to raise money for a bicycle parking rack is realized! We had a successful VCP Poker Tournament thanks especially to the Bayless family, and we have ordered the bike rack with the generous assistance of the Buell family. As of the end of April, the bike rack is installed and in place near the garage off of the east parking lot. The preschool is currently accepting registration for classes beginning next fall. Youth Ministry Congregational Care through Chicken Pot Pies In partnership with the Deacons’ ministry, our Valley Youth made one-serving chicken pot pies for a new outreach project. In mid-April, the Middle and High School Youth assembled 36 chicken pot pies to be given to those in need of a nutritious, easy meal. The youth had a lot of fun filling mini loaf pans with veggies, chicken, gravy and all of the seasonings needed to make home-cooked, comfort food. These pies are stored in the church’s Kitchen freezer and at the Youth House. When a Deacon, staff member, or any Valley member knows of someone in need of comfort and a meal, they are able to grab frozen pot pies and deliver them right away. Having prepared and assembled the pies, the Valley Youth are able to be a part of this caring, outreach ministry. What a wonderful way to share God’s love with those in our church family who are caring for others, lonely, sick or grieving.

Pancake Breakfast for Youth Mission May 5 You may purchase tickets at the door to support our youth’s summer mission trips and conferences. This summer, the High School Youth are serving at the Nez Perce Reservation in Lapwai, Idaho and attending Presbyterian Youth Triennium at Purdue University. The Middle School Youth will be at Mission Camp, serving in Salem and Portland. Tickets are $5/individual and $15/family (3 or more) for a delicious breakfast. The Clippers Mariners will support this fundraiser from the kitchen (Thank you!), and the youth will start serving pancakes, fruit, sausage, and beverages at 8:30 a.m., continuing after worship until noon.

Children’s Lock-In at the Youth House

Our annual lock-in for 4th and 5th graders is a great fellowship event for this age group and helps with the transition into the Middle School youth group when that time comes. In April, the Christian Nurture Committee sponsored the Children’s Lock-In, led by our youth ministry staff and volunteers. Eleven children participated in the event, complete with pizza, ice cream sundaes, a game of Sardines in the church building, a Bible study on the Fruits of the Spirit, and a movie. The children were able to explore the Youth House and play games of ping-pong, air hockey, and more. This July, the current group of 5th graders will be welcomed into the Middle School youth group (LIFE: Living In Faith Everyday) as rising 6th graders! The Youth Ministry Team looks forward to getting to know these kids even better.

Opportunities We’re looking for a few good men and/or women to assist with Sunday School activities with the children in late Spring. A huge thank you to all who contribute. Your effort is very much appreciated! Fellowship Committee Thank you to David and Susan Derting who graciously donated a 42” High Definition LED flat screen TV with DVD player to Valley, replacing one of Valley’s 19 year-old 23” CRT televisions. To accommodate the Flat Panel TV, the Men’s Bible Study, with the help of Memorial and Gift Funds, provided funds to buy the needed cart to transport the TV to wherever it is needed.

Thank you for the prayers, meals, and support as my family and I transition into a different phase of life with my mom. The love from my Valley family has been incredible, and I whole-heartedly thank you all! Angela Graham

After two months with the Valley Youth, Youth Ministry Coordinator Laurel

Cluthe added her handprint and name to the Youth House wall.

At the Parents’ Night Out in April, each child made an edible Lorax and truffula

tree. The theme for the evening was based on The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.
