Valley Community Presbyterian Church continues to thrive today as we gather to
worship and learn, to serve, to enjoy fellowship, and to grow in our Christian identities. But
we didn’t get here on our own!
Generations have sacrificed to make Valley Community a life-giving church for the past
75 years. Families, individuals, community groups, and even strangers have helped realize
our mission to truly be a community church, serving as a light of Christ to the Raleigh Hills
neighborhood, Portland, and around the world.
This got me thinking about the future: what will the next 75 years look like; not only for
the church, but for our personal lives, our family members, and our neighborhoods? What is
our legacy?
I would like to invite you to a wonderful dinner event sponsored by the Presbyterian
Foundation called ‘LEGACY GIVING: Making an impact and doing Christ’s work, even
after our lifetimes’ on Sunday, September 16, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. here at church.
We have two wonderful speakers with a wealth of knowledge who will be able to share about such topics, as well as
answer any questions you may have about making sure that your legacy is shared with generations to come. Please note:
this is not a fundraiser event, but purely a program to share valuable information with all who attend.
This event does require you to RSVP by September 12 in order to provide a free dinner, so please do so with the
information provided in the coming articles (see p. 1), or contact the church office.
I personally look forward to learning something new this evening, enjoying a delicious dinner, and getting to share in
what God continues to do here at Valley Community!
In Christ,
Rev. Jeff Binder
Memory Garden
It’s an exciting time at Valley!
As part of the Property
Improvement Plan, the new patio
adjacent to the Fireside Room has
been poured. The garden areas will
soon be ready for new plants and a
water feature. This garden will
represent the past, the present, and
the future of our wonderful church
community. Each of you has the
opportunity to purchase a plant or
make a contribution in memory of
someone or a special time you’ve
experienced at Valley. Look for the
Memory Garden table at the Fall

Mission Endowment Applications Due October 1

Dining for Women September 16
October 1st is the Fall application deadline for grants from Valley’s Mission Endowment Fund. The Mission
Endowment Committee meets in October and May to consider applications requesting funds for mission work.
Committee members review applications from both organizations and individuals, whether secular or church-related,
local, national or international.
Created in 1979, the Mission Endowment Fund is an important part of Valley’s mission program. Consideration is
given to applications which 1) address hunger, food and health needs of people around the world, 2) assist volunteers in
the mission field, 3) advance denominational programs of outreach, service and proclamation, and/or 4) assist secular
and social organizations that aid in the care of people. In the past 10 years, this fund has awarded grants totaling over
$180,000 to deserving applicants.
No applications will be accepted after the deadline. Contact [email protected], visit the
church office, or go to the church website: http://www.valleycommunity.org/mission--service/
stewardship.html#MissionEndowment for a grant application.
Valley is again pairing up with Raleigh Park
Elementary School to supply sturdy backpacks needed to
help 35 students with weekend food. Without this food
support, some of these families are unable to feed the
children over the weekend, and they go from Friday
lunch through Monday morning breakfast service without
a real meal. Packs will be collected through Sunday,
October 1. You may place your backpack in the
collection bin by the Fireside Room. Come meet the
creators of this ministry at our Mission Market in
November… and remember food is always accepted in
the bins too. Many thanks from your Mission Team.
Cents-Ability for July
and August
Thanks to all who brought change
in July when we gathered $213.24.
August saw $145.69; bringing our
yearly amount to: $1,599.81. Save
the date: September 16 for our next
collection.
Dining for Women at Valley learns about the Global AIDS Interfaith
Alliance in Malawi in September. As always, those attending share a bountiful
potluck lunch in the Fireside Room and learn about the featured non-profit,
then share their dining out dollars to donate to the grant request of that month’s
non-profit.
The Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance is a secular nonprofit that develops
innovative and caring healthcare programs in resource-deprived regions in
Africa, especially those most affected by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
They rigorously test their initiatives and promote the replication of successful
models.
The program that DFW is funding in September is the Nursing Scholars
Program. The purpose of the project is to fund 20 nurses (10 per year) in the
fourth and final year of nursing school and to help their transition to careers as
nurses. The Nursing Scholarship Program offers disadvantaged young women
with professional careers as nurses, lifting the women themselves, as well as
their families and communities out of the cycle of poverty.
Come learn more at the DFW at Valley meeting on Sunday, September 16 at
11:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room.
Join us starting Sunday morning,
September 16 for a five-week study
based on the scripture lessons in the
Gospel of John and the Book of Acts
that were studied by our children
during VBS in July. Valerie Conner,
who led the children through this
content, will facilitate our adult
review. This is a unique opportunity to look more deeply
into what our children learned this summer, and hopefully
enable intergenerational communication this fall!
We meet from 9:00-9:50 a.m. in Armitage Hall. Please
contact Valerie at [email protected], or at
503.453.7193.
Look for more adult education offerings during Kick
Off Sunday on September 9.

You are invited to join us for High Tea to celebrate memories of our dear friend,
Vernice Trask. The tea will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., in

~Move as water flowing around the
obstacles of life.~
Come enjoy the gentle, flowing
movements of tai chi—a great way to
practice balance, build strength, and
improve flexibility. Join us Tuesdays,
10:15-11:15 a.m., Armitage Hall,
beginning September 4. NOTE: There will be no class
on Tuesday, September 18. Questions? Contact Diane
Harris, [email protected], 503.805.6011.
Can you ever have too many garden fresh tomatoes?
September is typically a red month on the Produce Table
with many varieties, shapes and sizes of tomatoes filling
the table top. Of course, there is other garden abundance
there as well.
Plan to stop at by each week and see what has been
brought in by the many Valley members and friends that
enjoy playing in Oregon’s dirt and growing great things
to eat.
The donation box is ready to receive monetary
donations that go to the Oregon Food Bank to ease the
way of those experiencing food insecurity. Earth Care Corner
Did you know that many of the household
cleaners we use are so common that we don’t
think about their environmental impact? The
good news is there are many alternatives. Here
are two:
For GLASS: Combine 1 quart of warm
water with ¼ cup of white distilled vinegar
OR 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Mix these
ingredients and store in a spray bottle. Use
this as you would any glass cleaner. You
can even use old newspapers to dry the
surface!
For HAND WASH DISINFECTANTS: Tea
tree oil is antibacterial and anti-fungal. Add
10 drops of tea tree oil to 4 ounces of liquid
castile soap, like Dr. Bronner’s. Shake it up
to mix it. Store in a pump bottle.
The Valley Book Group
will meet on Friday,
September 28, 2018, in the
Fireside Room at 10:00 a.m.
to discuss Waking Up White,
by Debby Irving. This non-
fiction book was selected to
be a follow-up to the July
book, the novel called Small
Great Things. This very
honest, unflinching
exploration of race and
personal identity in America
is the story of the author’s
journey of understanding which led her to learn the
realities of racism and the unintended impact of the
white privilege she grew up with. All are welcome to
bring their own coffee and to join in the discussion of
this thought-provoking book.

Sanctuary Choir Begins September 6
Sanctuary Choir rehearsals begin Thursday, September 6 at 7:15 p.m. We
are looking for singers to enhance all sections. Please contact
[email protected] if you have questions.
TOP 10 REASONS TO JOIN A CHURCH CHOIR:
10. Rehearsal on Thursday night means one night away from the stresses of
busy life.
9. You always have a great reserved seat for Christmas and Easter.
8. You will be setting a good example for all the children, teenagers (and
reluctant adults.)
7. Intellectual Stimulation—when you make music, you are using both sides
of your brain simultaneously.
6. Since warm-ups are 45 minutes before the service, you will be awake and
ready to “make a joyful noise.”
5. No auditions or solos required!
4. People who are involved in music live longer and are healthier
3. From St. Augustine: “To Sing is to pray twice!”
2. Every once in a while, you might catch a glimpse of Heaven’s choir
singing along with you. I’m not kidding!
1. Serving the Lord—considering all He does for you, it’s just a little giving
back to HIM!
The federal income tax changes that have gone into effect for 2018 mean that many more of us will no longer itemize
our deductions but will use the standard deduction. However, if you are 70 ½ years old or older and have a retirement
IRA you can make a Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD) and still reap tax advantages from your giving to Valley
Church. This is possible because use of a QCD results in no taxable income, so your taxable income is in effect reduced
by the amount you give. Therefore, you can gain a tax advantage whether you are itemizing or simply using a standard
deduction. As a bonus, your gift may be used to satisfy part or all of the Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA.

VBS 2018 - Gear Up for Life’s Big Game!
At Valley’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) in July there were 49 children aged 3-11 who attended our daily activities.
We had more than 40 volunteers who helped with registration, snacks, recreation, crafts, music, Bible stories, mission,
and leading the children from one area to the next.
A HUGE thank you not only to all our volunteers, but also to all of you in the congregation who supported us by
supplying craft materials, gift cards and cash donations so that we were able to make this years VBS pay for itself.
Our Mission project this year was Living Waters for the World, a mission sponsored by Presbyterian USA. All of us
learned so much about the importance of water for our bodies, and how families in underdeveloped countries struggle for
this in their daily lives. We set a goal of $250, and by Friday had collected $515. Then thanks to your contributions, the
total was raised to over $670 on Sunday. This is the most ever raised for a VBS mission project.
And finally, thank you for all of you who prayed for us, before and during VBS week. We felt the love of the
congregation throughout.

Youth Update
Youth Musical
August was kicked off by our return from City Camp, a fun week where the middle schoolers served, learned, and had
fun! Our middle schoolers worked hard cleaning some roads and a park, helping in a community garden and playing
bean bag baseball with some seniors at a retirement home. On top of their hard work they played hard; competing in
laser tag, playing at the pool and jumping around at a trampoline park. Every night we got to sing and dance, listen to
great speakers like pastor Jeff and have small group discussions.
If that wasn’t enough for the month we also had our youth beach trip where we went to Seaside, played in the ocean,
explored the town a bit and of course had some ice cream! To finish up our exciting summer the Youth had an
opportunity to go visit the Real Life Exhibit put on by Medical Teams International where we got a picture of what crisis
looks like around the world and how we can do our small part to help. To have a little fun we finished that day with a
trip to Oaks Park and we had a blast!
In September look out for us at Kick Off Sunday (September 9 at 10:00 a.m.) to get our calendar for the year, and high
schoolers be sure to sign up for confirmation. Our first Youth Group is September 12 and it’s a parent information night!
See you soon!
