    First Reading (Genesis 18:20-32) (Sit)

Commentator: In our reading, we see that the just God is willing to spare sinful cities for the sakeof only a handful of good people. Here we also find the intercessory prayer ofthe just man, Abraham.

Reader: A reading from the Book of Genesis

IN THOSE. DAYS, the Lord said: 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave, that! must go down and see whether or not their actions fully

correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out."

While Abraham's visitors walked on farther toward Sodom, the LORD remained standingbefore Abraham. Then, Abraham drew nearer and said: Will you sweep away the

innocent with the guilty? Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; wouldyou wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent peoplewithin it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guiltyso that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of allthe world act with justice? The LORD replied, If I find fifty innocent people in the city of

Sodom, I will spare, the whole place for their sake.

Abraham spoke up again: See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am

but dust and ashes! What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will youdestroy the whole city because of those five? He answered, I will not destroy it, if I findforty-five there. But Abraham persisted: saying "What if only forty are found there?" Hereplied, "I Will forbear doing it for the sake of the forty."

Then Abraham said, "Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty arefound there?" He replied, "I will forbear doing it if I can. find but thirty there." StillAbraham went on, "Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are nomore than twenty?" The LORD answered, "I will not destroy it, for the sake of the twenty."But he still persisted: "Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. Whatif there are at least ten -there?" He replied, "For the sake of those ten, I will not destroyit.

    - The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

    Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 138)

R: Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.

    1. I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth;in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; I will worship at your holy temple and givethanks to your name. (R)

    2. Because of your kindness and your truth; for you have made great above all things your nameand your promise. When I called you answered me; you built up strength within me. (R)

    3. The Lord is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar. Though, I walkamid distress, you preserve me; against the anger of my enemies you raise your hand. (R)

    4. Your right hand saves me. The Lord will complete what he has done for me; your kindness, OLord, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands. (R)

    Second Reading (Colossians 2:12-14)

C: Baptism makes us sharers in the death and resurrection of Christ. Our Lord has made us new,and Paul challenges us to a new life in Christ.

R: A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians

BROTHERS and sisters: You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised withhim through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when youwere dead in transgressions and the un-circumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life alongwith him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; obliterating the bond against us, with itslegal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to thecross.

    The Word of the Lord.

    All: Thanks be to God.

C: Please all rise to give and honor to the Holy Gospel.

    Alleluia [Romans 8:15bc] (Stand)

    Choir: Aleluya-le-luya! Aleluya-le-luya! Ale-luuuya, ale-luuuya, aleluya-leee-luya!

    C: You have received a Spirit of adoption, through which we cry, Abba, Father.Choir: Aleluya-le-luya! Aleluya-le-luya! Ale-luuuya, ale-luuuya, aleluya-leee-luya!

    Gospel (Luke 11:1-13)

P: The Lord be with you.

    All: And with your spirit.

P: A proclamation from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

JESUS was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said tohim, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, ''When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily breadand forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us tothe final test.

And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend to whom, he goes at midnight andsays, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from

a journey and I have nothing to offer him, and he says in reply from within, Do not bother me;the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get upto give you anything. I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitors the loaves because oftheir friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.

And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be

opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the onewho knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snakewhen he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion-when he asks for an egg? If you then, who arewicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father inheaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

    - Sisters and Brothers, The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

C: Please be seated for the listening of the Homily.

Do not be afraid! When we go to proclaim Christ, it is he himself who goes before us and guides us.

When he sent his disciples on mission, he promised: I am with you always (Matthew 28:20). And thisis also true for us! Jesus does not leave us alone, he never leaves you alone! He always accompaniesyou.

And then, Jesus did not say: One of you go, but All of you go: we are sent together. Dear young

friends, be aware of the companionship of the whole Church and also the communion of the saintson this mission. When we face challenges together, then we are strong, we discover resources we didnot know we had. Jesus did not call the Apostles to live in isolation, he called them to form a group, a

community. I would like to address you, dear priests concelebrating with me at this Eucharist: youhave come to accompany your young people, and this is wonderful, to share this experience of faithwith them! But it is a stage on the journey. Please continue to accompany them with generosity and

joy, help them to become actively engaged in the Church; never let them feel alone! And at thispoint I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the youth ministry groups, to the movements andthe new communities that accompany the young people in their experience of being Church. Theyare so creative, so audacious. Carry on and do not be afraid!

    3. The final word: serve. The opening words of the psalm that we proclaimed are: Lord, on the day Icalled for help, you answered me (Psalm 95:1). What is this new song? It does not consist of words, itis not a melody, it is the song of your life, it is allowing our life to be identified with that of Jesus, it issharing his sentiments, his thoughts, his actions. And the life of Jesus is a life for others. It is a life ofservice.

In our Second Reading today, Saint Paul says: I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the

more (1 Corinthians 9:19). In order to proclaim Jesus, Paul made himself a slave to all. Evangelizingmeans bearing personal witness to the love of God, it is overcoming our selfishness, it is serving bybending down to wash the feet of our brethren, as Jesus did.

Three words: Go, do not be afraid, and serve. Follow these three words: Go, do not be afraid, andserve. If you follow these three ideas, you will experience that the one who evangelizes isevangelized, the one who transmits the joy of faith receives joy. Dear young friends, as you return toyour homes, do not be afraid to be generous with Christ, to bear witness to his Gospel. In the firstReading, when God sends the prophet Jeremiah, he gives him the power to pluck up and to break

down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant (1:10). It is the same for you. Bringing theGospel is bringing Gods power to pluck up and break down evil and violence, to destroy and

overthrow the barriers of selfishness, intolerance and hatred, so as to build a new world. Jesus Christ iscounting on you! The Church is counting on you! The Pope is counting on you! May Mary, Mother ofJesus Christ and our Mother, always accompany you with her tenderness: Go and make disciples ofall nations. Amen.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all

ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our

salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary

    and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose

again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is

seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness

of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

    Amen.

(cf. John 10:4). Could it be that in this voice, resounding in your heart, you have felt the tenderness ofGods love? Have you experienced the beauty of following Christ together with others, in the

Church? Have you understood more deeply that the Gospel is the answer to the desire for an evenfuller life? (cf. John 10:10). Is this true?

The Immaculate Virgin intercedes for us in heaven as a good mother who watches over her children.May Mary teach us by her life what it means to be a missionary disciple. Every time we praythe Angelus, we recall the event that changed the history of mankind for ever. When the AngelGabriel proclaimed to Mary that she would become the Mother of Jesus the Saviour, even withoutunderstanding the full significance of that call, she trusted God and replied: Behold, I am the

handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). But what did she doimmediately afterwards? On receiving the grace of being the Mother of the Incarnate Word, she didnot keep that gift to herself; with a sense of responsibility, she set off from her home and went in hasteto help her kinswoman Elizabeth, who was in need of assistance (cf. Luke 1:38-39); she carried out anact of love, of charity, and of practical service, bringing Jesus who was in her womb. And she did allthis in haste!

There, my dear friends, we have our model. She who received the most precious gift from God, asher immediate response sets off to be of service and to bring Jesus. Let us ask Our Lady to help us tooto give Christs joy to our families, our companions, our friends, to everyone. Never be afraid to begenerous with Christ. It is worth it! Go out and set off with courage and generosity, so that every manand every woman may meet the Lord.

Dear friends, we have an appointment for the next edition of the Festival. Through Our Ladysmaternal intercession, let us ask for the light of the Holy Spirit upon the journey that will lead us to thisnext stage in our joyful celebration of faith and the love of Christ.

And now let us pray together:
