9-30-65 ISLANDER

WHO'S WHO ON CAPTIVADr. and Mrs. Lynn Beals

first arrived on Sanibel Island, where they spent the night. Aftera visit with Miss Snyder, theydrove the next day to CaptivaIsland and stopped to visit withMrs. Stella Mitchell.

At the time Mrs. Mitchelljust had the Coconut Cottage(now Castaways Restaurant) andthe Hibiscus Cottage. The Bealsmust have fallen in love withthe Island at once, as the fol-lowing day, after motoring toKey West, they telephoned Mrs.Mitchell, asking if they couldrent Coconut Cottage. Duringthis time the Hayfords were inthe Hibiscus Cottage, so itwasn't until the next year theBeals took over this cottagefor a three year period.

Dr. Beals had a little red1 which he used to pullon the beach to cart the

lany shells he found. He soldthem to Mr. Hiers. The landon which their present housestands was purchased, for themost part, with the moneys re-ceived from his shelling.

A contractor from up neartheir Georgia Bay summer cot-tage came down and started thehouse near the Captiva IslandBridge on Sanibel, but it wasfinished by Mr. Bracken, MaeShannon's father.

They were in the house onlyone year when Dr. Beals passedaway at their Georgian Bay

page.'Through the years, Mrs.

Elizabeth Beals endeared her-self to everyone on the Islands. She was constantly looking aftersomeone and giving them ahelping hand. Mrs. Beals andMrs. Mitchell became f a s tfriends and they were seenmost every place together.

During the war years, Betsy, the daughter of the late Mr.Max Hayford and Jean Hayford, spent one year here caringfor Jimmie, the four year oldson of Mr. and Mrs. Beals.Jimmie has been a constantvisitor all these years.

Mrs. Beals became inter-ested in the church and it waslargely through her effort thatC aptiva started having a regular

ster. All throughtheyears,Beals took charge of the

Communion service and wasmost faithful in her duties. Herrecent passing is mourned byall who knew her; she will livein their memories for yearsto come.

A note from Mrs. J .J .GRULLEMANS, which came toolate to be included in the write-up about Mr, ALEXANDERREED (ALEX) last week, has

this addition to make: Mr. Reedwas buried on September 11 atWest Chop, Mass. The servicewas held in his beautiful gardenon a cold dreary day, Wednes-day, September 15, with a fewclose friends attending. He waslast seen shopping in WestTillsbury on August 31 and wasthen in excellent spirits. Hewas buried in the little cemeteryat West Tillsbury.

Last year and the year be-fore he occupied the Grulle-mans' guest house for a monthor two and also the boat houseof MARIE DICKEY KALMAN.He will be missed by his manyfriends on Captiva Island.

DODIE BOOTH had beenlooking forward with enthusiasmto the campaign kick-off break-fast for the Fort Myers Sym-phony Orchestra, to be held, she thought, on September 18,at 10:00 a.m. in Fort Myers.

As she and her daughterCATHY entered, they noticedeveryone had finished eating,so demurely walked to the backof the room. WILLARD BOYCE,business manager, was speak-ing and he said, "Welcome,Dodie Booth and daughter, themeeting and breakfast was at8:30 a.m. You are just in timefor the benediction." TWO REDFACES!!!

Dodie hopes everyone willsupport the Symphony. Theirefforts in behalf of the youngpeople as well as all residentsof our area will be greatly ap-preciated. The season's pro-gram is exciting! For furtherinformation c o n c e r n i n g thedrive, please contact Dodie,LeROY FRIDAY or PHOEBEHAYNIE of Sanibel Island.

The BECKERS, GEORGE &BETTY, are back in their newhome on Cape Coral road forthe season. They report theweather here is fine comparedto what they drove through allthe way. Much rain. Good toknow you are around, neighbors, even tho' across the causeway.

Dr. HOMER HINDMAN andJOHN ILLYN have been at itagain—this time a 160 Ib. shark. As usual, they were out tocatch lady-fish for Mr. Illyn'spelicans. After catching hisquota—9 or 10—they decidedagain to look for shark. Justoutside the pass coming in withthe tide against the wind this"thing" hit. Baby DucksWhen Charlotta Matthews and

Clark, her little brother, werevery small children on SanibelIsland, their father made them asmall duck pond out back filledwith fresh water with largeshells for a border and a stretchof clean sand and some realgrass. This made a home forsome newly hatched baby ducks. They all took to it as you knowducks take to water, and had alovely time. It was just the placeto rear a dozen or so smallducks. The children fed themand saw that they were welltaken care of and put them into bed early in an old chickencoop which could be closed by afront door. A happy time washad by all!

One day the children thoughtthe ducks would like to swim inthe Gulf of Mexico for a change.Lots more water. They swam sowell by now, too. So Charlottacarried two, one in each hand, and Clark carried two and care-fully sat them down in the gulfafter they had waded out in thewater knee deep. To their uttersuprise and horror, the duckswere quickly swirled out intothe gulf» That .particular daythere happened to be a strongoutgoing tide and what couldtiny puff balls of tiny ducks doabout it! Nothing but stay afloatand away they went, sometimeswhirling about, but always afloat. Both children screamed as loudas they could for their mother. She came running. As usual shewas quick to grasp the situationand the solution. "Keep quiet, dears. They will be right back. The tide is about to turn andbring them to you. But watch soyou see they land!"

Both children were cryingbut they cheered up and kepttheir eyes on the tiny speckswhich almost went out of sightbut not quite! And the tide didturn and the specks got largerand larger and finally thsv couldsee baby ducks bravely swim-ming. The children waded out asfar as they could. What matteredwet clothes in such an emer-gency. Granny Matthews had weteyes too! When the childrencould reach the babies, theytenderly lifted them out of thebig gulf and carried them back

* * * * * #A Jolt

Granny Matthews told methis incident which happened inthe very early days on Sanibel,There were several log cabinsbuilt high on stilts back ofIsland Inn where the coloredfamilies lived. Some workedat the Inn and some worked inthe fields where pioneer farm-ers raised tomatoes.

Late one fall, a hurricanecame along. A hurricane neversneaks up on you, even withouta weather bureau to warn you. There are unmistakable signs ofits approach -— strong steadywinds, not just gusts, heavyrain and an oppressive atmos-phere. Granny had" asked allof the families to bring theirbedclothes and come into the

from page 3Inn kitchen for the duration. They all came except for onewoman who said she would muchrather stay in her own cabin. She did, while the others allmade themselves comfortablein the Inn kitchen.

The storm hit! There's no-thing like a hurricane, fort-unately. Once it hits, there isnothing anyone can do but stayinside and batten down!

Along towards the inky-blackand howling morning, the lonehold-out, dripping wet and with-out her bedclothes, came inthe back door of the kitchen. They all gathered around her.She said she just had "a jolt"and thought she had better comeinside the Inn. Everyone washappy and relieved to see her.

After the storm the nextday, they discovered that thehurricane had blown her cabinof its base and fully fifty feetacross a field and crashed itdown with a blow which brokeit up. And so "a jolt" hadbrought her inside the Inn!
