The smell of division celebrations and BBQs is certainly wafting over the Surrey Hills! As we begin to look towards arrangements for the autumn term, we see many opportunities on the horizon for leaders and girls, so keep reading those emails watching social media and trailing new challenges (they don’t all have to be #barefoot! Anna is coming to a road near you!) Enjoy the outdoors Lesley Bailey Surrey East County Commissioner Information Request Do you have ideas or opinions for how we can involve more 18 to 30 year olds in roles outside of units? Join the conversation by emailing [email protected]. If you're 18 to 30 we would like your help and suggestions about how we can make you and your peers aware of opportunities to take on roles outside of units as a way to volunteer with Girlguiding, or how we can make them more appealing. We've gathered some ideas earlier this year but want you to help shape exactly what we do. Time commitment is flexible, depending on you, from a few conversations (potentially through whatsapp) to leading the development of an idea. At present less than 10% of roles outside of a unit nationally are held by members under 30 yet a third of volunteers are in this age group. Imagine what new ideas could be shared, skills developed and role models created for young members if we could change that. To all of Girlguiding’s Volunteers

It’s a lovely time of year this summer term and you have all been fantastic at both, grasping each opportunity as it arrives - judging by the soon to be released newsletter.

Anna is coming to a road near you!)

British Legion Cenotaph Remembrance Parade 2019 The British Legion is keen to change the dynamics of the above parade and we are now looking for Forces Veterans to participate in the parade that can also represent Girlguiding.

So if you were a member of the Forces and would appreciate the chance to parade, please could you email [email protected] as soon as possible including your military number?

We can then ask for the spaces on parade when we have an idea of demand.

Will your unit be safe space compliant by December 2020?

By December 2020 everyone needs to have the correct level of A Safe Space training for their role.

Anyone attending a residential must have levels 1 and 2 and one person must hold level 3. Full guidance can be found here.

Levels 1 and 2 can be done online and take around 30 minutes, however level 2 requires a follow up conversation with a DC/ Div. Com or Trainer. All links are: Level 1, Level 2, Level 2 conversation structure

For those who would prefer to learn face to face there is a level 1 training on Tuesday 11th June and a level 2 on Wednesday 12th June. More details will follow.

September Evening Training Dates 2nd, 3rd & 4th September 2019

We are still finalising the trainings proposed for early September, and once the full information on venues and training sessions are known this will be passed on. As we are all approaching the summer term, we will keep you updated via the last County update of this term, and then via the County website, so whilst you may be immersed in camps and holidays with your units, or jetting off with your family, if you wish to attend the trainings, please do keep checking so that you can book for the sessions you want.

Many thanks

Barefoot Britain Girlguiding ambassador and global adventurer Anna McNuff has announced her latest big challenge - Barefoot Britain.

Anna is running the distance of 100 marathons (2,620 miles) barefoot. The Barefoot Britain challenge begins in the Shetland Islands on Sunday 2 June and ends in London on Sunday 10 November.

Over the course of five months, Anna will run along rugged coastlines, through small villages, across moors, over windswept mountains, along beaches, over farmland - and even down the odd picturesque A-road.

Anna will also be passing through some of the country’s biggest cities and is encouraging the runners (or wannabe runners) of Britain to throw on their trainers and join her for a mile or two

Girlguiding members will have the opportunity to be visited by Anna during the Barefoot Britain challenge. To find out if she’s running near your unit, visit Anna's site HERE to see the route. You can arrange a visit by emailing [email protected].

In July 2018 Girlguiding updated its iconic badges and activities to give girls the chance to explore new interests in a supportive, girl-only space.

Embracing adventure is a key theme of the charity’s updated programme, which includes badges like Agility, Fitness, Navigator and Sports. In meetings, they can learn about camping and exploring with activities created to inspire all girls of all ages, from cooking over a tealight to navigating using the stars.

None of us likes seeing plastic bottles in our parks and on our streets. And we’ve seen the damage that plastic rubbish can do to our oceans. Together we can change this. Future Girl Acts is our new annual week of taking action on the issues highlighted in Future Girl. Each year we'll come together to tackle a key problem girls care about. This year it's plastic pollution - part of our Planet Protectors topic.

We can all make small changes and use less plastic– and this does make a difference. But imagine what we can do when we all - Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and volunteers - come together to make our voices heard. It’s a game changer.

When we all get involved we can really make a difference to our world and the animals that we share it with.

What’s the plan for Future Girl Acts?

Plastic pollution is a big problem - so we need to do something big to fix it.

We're going to inspire everyone to recycle more and use less plastic. And we're going to show them how much we care about it.

In our units, we’ll be creating sculptures out of used plastic bottles to show how much we want to protect the planet from plastic pollution. And we'll take to social media to show what we've done. Using #FutureGirlActs to show the world that we can be a powerful force for change.

What do I need to do?

For now, keep 30 September – 6 October free in your planning.

In July we'll release a new unit meeting activity to do in that week. It will tell you all you need to know to take part in Future Girl Acts - including tips on collecting plastic waste and recycling it afterwards. The week of Future Girl Acts is just the start of our action on plastic, so look out for more ways to get involved.

FUTURE GIRL ACTS

A week of working together to tackle plastic pollution. 30 Sept – 6 Oct 2019
