The new Swingo sweepers come withtracking and four- way cameras, whichrepresent new features. They will alsofeature a scrub deck, a quick-changeattachable brushing block with threestrong, independent nylon brushes. “Thequick-change brush arms are completelyindependent of each other so the operator has achoice of functions such as brushing or scrubbingalone, suction alone, brushing-scrubbing-suctiontogether and even the option of adding detergentto the water in order to help the cleaningprocess,” says Simon Stringer, Aebi Schmidt AreaSales Manager. Simon explains that the scrubdecks were delivered in March and they wereinstalled by one of the Aebi Schmidt engineers.

“We have a responsibility to ensure thatPoole’s natural and built environment, includingpublic spaces and where we live, are safe, cleanand attractive. To ensure we are able to deliver onthis commitment Poole employs a small multiskilled team utilising innovative high techequipment,” says John Burridge, Fleet ServicesOfficer, Environmental and Consumer Protection

Services at Borough of Poole. He adds:“We have run Schmidt machines for thelast six years and have found them verywell suited to the task.”

The council in Poole is committed tomaintaining the streets clean and making

the borough a more attractive place to live byregularly cleaning an approximate 300 miles ofpublic roads and footpaths and 339 hectares ofopen spaces, including Poole's beaches, of litter, dog fouling and detritus.

“We decided to purchase theSwingo sweepers after we runtests that showed thesemachines to meet ourrequirements in relation toproductivity and after salesservice superior,” said Ian Bain,Green Space Manager at WestDunbartonshire Council.

“The Council is so pleasedwith our machines, that is in theprocess of ordering two otherSwingo sweepers, which arescheduled for delivered aroundMay this year,” said DavidCarswell, Aebi Schmidt AreaSales Manager Scotland &Republic of Ireland.

West Dunbartonshire lies tothe northwest of Glasgow, between Loch Lomond and theRiver Clyde. Although the areacontains many of Glasgow's

commuter towns and villages,as well as the city's suburbs, itis one of the smallest councilsin Scotland, covering an area of61 square miles.

But although the area issmall, the council still deals

with a range of litter problemsand is responsible for keepingroads clean and litter-free. Itbases its street cleaningprogramme on perceived needwith frequencies of cleaningvarying depending on location.

CityJet is Aebi Schmidt’s new streetwasher product, now featuring adifferent chassis: “We’ve put ourproven washer technology onto ourSwingo compact sweeper chassis andalthough the technology is basically thesame, the CityJet is far easier to use,”says Simon Stringer, Aebi SchmidtArea Sales Manager.

Although the centre of Oxford isdominated by the university colleges, like any large city, it also has very busyshopping streets. Washing is a key partof the cleansing regime in any citycentre. No matter how frequentsweeping gets done, the busieststreets, in particular, will never stayclean and will require washing toremove stains, grime and other marksnot removed by sweeping.

“Oxford City Council is responsiblefor removing litter from all paved andnon-paved areas, verges and openareas and is committed to improve theappearance and function of the citycentre’s streets and spaces,” saysOwain Pearce, Fleet Technical Officer atOxford City Council. He continues:“We believe that a high quality streetenvironment is fundamental to thesuccess of the city as a place where

people want to live, work and visit. Anattractive street scene as well ashaving aesthetic benefits also hassocial, economic, environmental andsafety benefits.”

Broughton is one of the two sites in theUK (the other one being Filton, nearBristol) where Airbus aircraft wings aredesigned, engineered and produced.Airbus in the UK is a world leader inwing design, engineering andmanufacturing and is a key centre forthe testing and integration of fuelsystems and landing gear.

However, the new SNK 55.1 and theFS90 are not the only Aebi Schmidtequipment working at Broughton: “In2012 we purchased two TJS jetsweepers to replace two units of adifferent brand. That was followed in2014 by the first SNK 55.1 snow plough. And that same year we purchased twomagnets for FOD detection that werefitted to the rear of both Schmidtsweepers,” explains Nick Trueman,Operational Compliance Officer,Aerodrome Management - GWLUA,AIRBUS in the UK.

The SNK 55.1 is a lightweight snowplough with optimum clearingproperties, ideal for attachment totractors and trucks with low payloads. The FS90 snow cutter blower isdesigned for severe winter service andcan be used for clearing high levels ofhard, icy snow as well as for removingthe side walls of snow left behind bysnow ploughs.

It is the sweepers, however, whichsee the most action at Broughton. “Wenow have four sweepers, two of whichare Schmidt, with the aim of having aminimum of three machines operationalat all times,” says Nick.

Apart from snow clearing, theSchmidt sweepers are used forremoving water and rubber from the

runway all year round. “The runway hasto be available all day, from 06:30 to23:59 for Beluga deliveries supportingwing production,” explains Nick referringto the large Beluga planes, the world'smost volumetrically cavernous aircraft, able to carry huge cargo loads. TheBeluga plane has the widest fuselage ofany plane in the world, civil or military, and although it was specificallydesigned to carry aircraft parts forAirbus, over the years it has beencontracted to carry other unusual loadssuch as whole helicopters andinternational space station modules.

And how has the Aebi Schmidtequipment performed so far? “Wecontinually assess our snow fleet andhow we can improve our equipment. The Schmidt equipment has provedvery reliable, with good after salesservice and technical back up,”says Nick.

“The council took delivery of seven newspreaders in September, in time for thepresent winter season. All these sevenvehicles were fitted with the SchmidtWinter Report Telematics system duringtheir original build. Then the customerasked us to install the system onto sixother Schmidt spreaders which they’vehad since 2013/2014,” explains DavidHarvey, Technical Sales Manager(Winter).

According to David, the installation ofthe system on the older vehicles was

carefully coordinated with the counciland was carried out at the customer’srespective depots. Somerset CountyCouncil was looking for a system whichwould reliably record exactly what hadbeen spread on the road, as well aswhen this was done. The WinterMaintenance Telematics system can becustomised to each customer’s individualrequirements so the council is able to dothis by having web-based access andoverview of all its gritting activities.

“The system is our own ‘in-house’

platform so we can ensure completeintegration of the spreader and thetelematics system,” says David . Heexplains that at the click of a button thecouncil is able to generate reports on itsentire fleet of Schmidt spreaders. Thesystem also lets the council’s personnelview vehicle movement in real time, which improves operator safety. Otherfeatures include driver identification, automatic alerts and the ability to buildthermal maps as well as to monitor saltstock levels.

Airbus – wings of the world Airbus UK has taken delivery of a SNK 55.1 snow plough and a FS90 snow cutter blower to add to its winter fleet.Delivered at the end of 2015, the machines are deployed at the company’s facilities in Broughton, North Wales.

Complete Control with TelematicsThe number of Schmidt’s spreaders operating at Somerset County Council that feature the AebiSchmidt’s Winter Report Telematics system has now risen to 13 after the local authority in south westEngland had it fitted to six more units.

Not only has the council taken on 11Schmidt Stratos spreaders and snowploughs from Gulliver’s Truck Hire forthis season, but it has also decided touse Aebi Schmidt’s Autologic system.

Flintshire County Council hasamalgamated all its winter maintenanceoperations into one depot (rather thanrunning two as it had previously) andhas brought drivers into the operationfrom other services.

The benefits of Autologic, AebiSchmidt’s route guidance andautomated spreading, represent anattractive opportunity to ensure that allroutes are completed safely and onschedule. “With roads being so busythese days, the council felt that it wascritical to allow their drivers themaximum amount of time possible withtheir hands on the wheel and not on thespreader controls, as well as the bestpossible chance to learn the route andnot stopping to refer to maps,” explains

Austin Anderson, BusinessDevelopment Manager (Winter).According to Austin, the council hasalso noted a significant reduction in saltconsumption since using the Schmidtequipment; around 10 tonnes of saltover each schedule.

Flintshire County Council has a totalof 9,000 tonnes of salt stored and ateam of gritters on standby, ready totake to the local roads. Furthermore, the drivers are all now fully trained inwinter maintenance. The team covers

12 priority-one routes across thecounty, gritting 45% of Flintshire'sroads, one of the highest percentagesin Wales.

This new deal strengthens therelationship between Aebi Schmidt,Gullivers Truck Hire and the Welshcouncil. The company has been closelyworking with the council in order toprogramme all the routes into theAutologic system, varying spreaddosages and familiarising the team withhow to get the best out of the system.

The a ttachable spreader, which waspurchased via TH White, the council’sagricultural supplier, is specificallydesigned for de-icing smaller municipalareas. Also, it can be attached totractors quickly and is easy to use. Thecouncil took delivery of the 1.2m³Traxos in December, when AebiSchmidt carried out commissioning ofthe machine, which includedconducting certificated operatortraining as well as a calibration to thecustomer’s specific salt.

Following the Government’s recent

investment into the Cycle CityAmbition Grant programme in order toboost levels of cycling, SouthGloucestershire Council was lookingfor a professional solution to treat itsown cycling network. This solutionneeded to be tractor-mounted, proven, accurate, of high quality and have thecapability of being calibrated. Thecouncil also required the driver to beable to load the hopper with salt andcontrol all operations from the cab.

“During the evaluation processcarried out by TH White on our behalf,

the Schmidt Traxos salt spreader wasidentified as the most suitablemachine,” says Simon Spedding,StreetCare Design & OperationsManager at South GloucestershireCouncil.

David Harvey, Technical SalesManager (Winter) at Aebi Schmidtexplains how the Traxos’ ingenious self-loading feature, which allows theoperator to simply lower the hopperthrough 90° and reverse into the saltpile, as well as the cab mounted CXcontrol panel, provide full control, justat the touch of a button.

In addition to carrying out an axleload calculation, Aebi Schmidt alsoundertook analysis of the route lengthsin consultation with the council, basedon the required spreading width anddosage in order to determine theoptimum size of the spreader.

David says: “We’re committed tosupporting our customers through TotalLifetime Care (TLC), with robust andprofessional solutions.”

The purchase of the latest generationSchmidt Supra 4002 is part of a record£2.5 million investment programme byTayside in new vehicles and plant for the2015/2016 season.

The new machine has beendesigned specifically for regions withlarge accumulations of snow and hasbeen improved all-round. For instance, the new reversible clearing head drive is

now directly integrated, eliminating theneed for a drive shaft. The clearing headis powered mechanically via a two-speed gearbox.

Worthy of mention is also thearticulated steering and intelligent powerdrive transmission that ensures aconsistent clearing capacity. The Supra4002 can cut 3,500 tonnes of snow perhour, which it can throw a distance of upto 40 metres with a cutting speed of upto 40kph.

The Supra 4002 for TaysideContracts also comes with a routeguidance system that allows themachine to follow a pre-programmedroute. This is a key feature, especially inwhite-out conditions, as the systemmemorises not only the route but alsothe edge of the road, thereby helpingthe driver and providing extra safety.

Five operators from TaysideContracts have been trained on the newmachine, which will help keep the roads

within Tayside, and in particular the A93road to the Glenshee Ski Centre, openduring periods of inclement weather.

This area of Scotland is not new forSchmidt equipment. In fact, the newmachine replaces a 1986 Schmidt VF5snow cutter blower which will beretained as a back-up unit. An even olderSchmidt snow cutter blower, a 1977model which has been working there fordecades, is now for sale.

Tayside Contracts also ordered twospreaders featuring the SchmidtAutologic system; the hands freespreading system that also providesroute guidance.

“The new Schmidt equipment ispart of Tayside Contracts’ commitmentto delivering an effective and efficientwinter service to the localcommunities,” said Bob Ritchie,Transport Services Manager at TaysideContracts, as quoted in Transport Newsrecently.

On yer bikes in South GloucestershireA Traxos attachable spreader was acquired by South Gloucestershire Council, in South West England, in order totreat its cycling road network with salt, make it safer and encourage more people to get on their bikes.

Highland - a council area in the ScottishHighlands - is the largest localgovernment area in the UnitedKingdom, covering an area of 26,484square km (10,225 square miles) -which is 11.4% of the total size ofGreat Britain and is 20% larger thanWales.

The great size of this area ofspectacular scenery also means thatHighland Council has the longest roadnetwork of any council in Scotland. With this comes the challenge ofwinter road maintenance – in fact,6,774 km of roads.

The council’s winter service runsfrom 1 October 2015 until 30 April2016. With an average cost of £5million year, it involves 215 staff, anaverage of 50,000tonnes/year of salt, 108gritters, 48 footpathtractors and one snowcutter.

“Highland Council hasone of the largest winterfleets of any council in theUK with our 108 frontlinegritters available during thecore months of winter,”explains John Maclennan,Community Services,Road & Transport atHighland Council. Hecontinues: “Along with thelongest road network of any council inScotland we also have the most ruraland least populated (an area the size ofBelgium but with only 225,000people). As a result, our winter serviceis delivered through a network of 40main and local depots. Depot sizesvary, the largest, in Inverness, maylaunch up to 20 gritters, whereas moreremote local depots may encompass asingle gritter. All our newly purchasedequipment is being used on frontlineduties with locations spread as far asFort William on the west coast to Nairnon the east.”

Two of the Schmidt gritters usedon frontline duties feature Autologic, the spreading system with GPSnavigation that guides the driver alongthe route while the spreading processhappens automatically. The systemenhances driver safety as there is nodistraction by the spreading processand the driver can concentrate fully on

the traffic. “HavingAutologic in two of thespreaders gives Highlandthe perfect opportunity totrial the system beforecommitting to more,” saysDavid Carswell, Area SalesManager Scotland &Republic of Ireland.

The new spreaderswere acquired to replaceold stock. So why did

Highland Council decide to go withAebi Schmidt? “We were impressedby the standard of equipment andbackup service offered by the companyand we had also received favourablefeedback from other users,” says John.

He adds: “On asking for formalquotations for Schmidt equipment wefound them to be extremely competitiveso we placed an initial order for the eightnew units. Now, during this winterseason 2015/16, we’re evaluating theequipment’s reliability. So far both theequipment and backup service have metour requirements. Regarding our initialorder, all the equipment was deliveredon time and to our requiredspecification.”

Da vid says: “We've had a verysuccessful winter season with HighlandCouncil and we’re ready to supportthem in their commitment to provide anexcellent winter road maintenanceservice.”

Stop Press! In addition to the spreaders and snow plough orders for road winter maintenancedescribed above, Highland Council has now taken delivery of a Euro6 Swingo compactsweeper to cover the city of Inverness.

Maintaining the longest road network in ScotlandAebi Schmidt has delivered a total of eight spreaders and ploughs to the Highland Council in Scotland in time for thepresent winter season. The product mix includes 6cu and 9cu, both permanently mounted and with RoRo demount.

Inverness is one of Scotland’sseven cities and is located inScotland’s northeast coast, south of the Highlands, on thebanks of the River Ness. Nearbyis Loch Ness, the 23-mile-longfreshwater lake, whichaccording to legend harboursthe Loch Ness Monster. Theruined medieval Urquhart Castleoverlooks the loch.

A thriving city, Inverness

boasts a number of historicbuildings, especially the 19th-century, pink crenellatedInverness Castle, which sits ona hill above the city and islavishly decorated with flowers.

As befits a city, HighlandCouncil allocates a great amountof resources to street cleaningand littler picking in the sevenInverness wards. These includethe deployment of staff and

equipment in order to improvethe quality of street cleansing, mainly in the city centre streets.

Highland Council’s newSwingo sweeper features theeconomical turbo diesel Euro6engine with SCR and AdBlue, which provides significant fuelsavings.

“This sprayer forHeathrow Airport also

features the latestgeneration control panel, which makes it moreintuitive and user friendlyfor the operator,” says MikeMoore, International KeyAccount Manager at AebiSchmidt.

Delivered towards theend of last year, the newASP has replaced anotherSchmidt machine deliveredover 10 years ago.

Heathrow is one of thebusiest airports in theworld. Nearly 75 millionpassengers travelledthrough Heathrow in 2015,an increase of 2.2% on2014 and the airport’shighest ever number ofannual passengers.

Heathrow wasrecognised by passengersas the “Best Airport inWestern Europe” in theSkytrax Global AirportAwards and awarded“Airport of the Year” in theIndependent’s TravelAwards.

“Despite the fact that we had a verytight deadline, we received the new TJSsweepers and the WSP sprayer right ontime. We really appreciate the efforts ofthe team at Aebi Schmidt to meet ourchallenging timeline,” said Ian Devine,Head of Asset Care – Airfield, at DublinAirport.

The TJS sweepers are used forefficient removal of snow from runways, taxiways and aprons. The tremendouscapacity of these jet sweepers comesto the forefront when restoring safeconditions on traffic surfaces has to bedone as quickly as possible.

The WSP was developed for the de-icing of airport aprons. Its spray andprojection nozzles guarantee highlyaccurate distribution of the de-icingliquid. The maximum spraying width is20 metres.

“Thankfully we have not used theTJS 630 in anger so far this winter butwe are delighted to have bolstered oursnow-clearing fleet with the twoadditional vehicles,” said Ian. Hecontinues: “The WSP sprayer has beenused actively over the winter seasonand to date is performing exceptionallywell. We are delighted with theequipment, the service level and theafter sales support from all the team atAebi Schmidt.”

Dublin Airport, which is owned andmanaged by daa Plc, is not onlyIreland's busiest airport but it is alsoamongst the ten busiest airports inEurope. According to recent press coverage,Simon Sturgis and his agency, SturgisCarbon Profiling (SCP), will publish aroadmap later this year that will showhow future construction at Gatwick, including its planned second runway, are fully sustainable and will generatethe lowest carbon footprint possible. The construction plans associated withGatwick’s second runway will beclosely inspected to ensure there isminimal carbon impact.

Gatwick Airport has alreadypledged to cut its carbon footprint byhalf by 2020 compared to that in 1990– a target the Government has set forthe country to reach by 2025.

As part of this commitment, theairport will begin a phasedimplementation of economicincentives to encourage the use ofelectric cars and vans. This is part of alonger term initiative to transition to anall-electric fleet on its apron.

The world’s first biogas towed jetsweeper – TJS-CSnow clearing machines are vital tokeep airports open in winter. They aremade for fast, effective and intensive

The future of aviation is greenHow Aebi Schmidt’s ‘green’ biogas TJS-C can help airports reduce their carbon footprint. Aviation emissions is bignews right now. Accordingly, in its quest to become the UK’s most sustainable airport with the lowest carbonemission by 2025, Gatwick Airport has recently appointed a carbon expert to help realise this ambition.

cleaning of runways, taxiways, apronsand supply roads thanks to their highworking speed and manoeuvrability. But they are huge machines andcollectively emit a significant part of anairport fleet’s emissions.

On the other hand, biofuels play akey role in the aviation industry’sroadmap for lower emissions. Andbiofuels is a key feature of the AebiSchmidt’s green TJS-C, the world’s firstbiogas towed jet sweeper.

Powered by Volvo engines fuelledby a mixture of biogas and biodiesel, the green TJS does not differ in powerfrom other TJS machines operatingwith a conventional Volvo engine. It isequipped with an efficient airport snow

plough which produces snow and ice-free surfaces. The patentedhydraulically powered sweeping unit islocated under the supporting frameand can be locked lengthwise fortransport. The blower unit generates aclass-leading lateral air flow over thecomplete width, which efficientlyblows the snow away from the runway.Furthermore, the TJS-C can operatewithout refuelling for up to 10 hoursand is capable of working in difficultweather conditions over longerperiods. Depending on snow quantityand height the machine can work at aspeed of up to 50 km/h.

“This machine is large in size butenvironmen tally friendly, innovative andexclusive to Aebi Schmidt,” says MikeMoore, International Key AccountManager. Mike explains that the biogasgreen TJS-C is currently only availablefor the Schmidt TJS-C/ Volvo dumpertruck, however, the company is open toconsider other truck manufacturers forsimilar projects.

THE TJS-C CANOPERATEWITHOUTREFUELLING FORUP TO 10 HOURSAND IS CAPABLEOF WORKING INDIFFICULTWEATHERCONDITIONSOVER LONGERPERIODS.

Swedish PioneerSwedish national airportoperator Swedavia knowsabout lower aviationemissions all too well. Thecompany, which operates 10 ofthe country’s largest andbusiest airports, aims to makeall of them carbon-neutral by2020. This significant and

ambitious initiative wasbehind the collaborationbetween the airport operator,Volvo and Aebi Schmidt tocome up with thedevelopment of the greenTJS-C. It started in 2010 when

Swedavia wanted to replace allits towed jet sweepers withenvironmentally friendlymachines that run on biogasand found that they were notavailable in the market. The development process

involved years of research andexperimentation between theparties but finally the firstgreen TJS-C machines weredelivered to Swedavia in 2014.“Currently, the companyoperates 59 machines, 13 ofwhich are biogas,” says Mike ,adding that a further eightbiogas jet sweepers arecurrently on order for delivery

in the summer this year. To start with, Swedavia

used biodiesel only and afterone full winter season (2014-2015) of working with thecarbon-neutral towed jetsweepers at three of the tenairports, the company reporteda reduction of at least 20% infossil carbon dioxideemissions. This winter season(2015-2016), Swedavia is usingboth biogas and biodiesel andaccording to a recent article inAirside International, theoperator expects to reduceemissions by 60-80% for snowclearing.

Back in the UK, GatwickAirport’s significantcommitment to carbonreduction sees the airport takethe leadership in this area. Ascarbon emission analysisexpert Simon Sturgis recentlyquoted in the industry press: "Iam very excited at the scaleand commitment of Gatwick'scarbon reduction ambitions.Their plans are significant, imaginative and groundbreaking and the leadershipthey are showing has thepotential to be game changingfor carbon reduction acrossthe UK."

ASEA stands for Aebi SchmidtExcellence in Aftersales and it is basedon the Toyota Production System (TPS)and Lean Manufacturing principle.

TPS organises manufacturing andlogistics and includes interaction withsuppliers and customers. The drivingforce behind TPS is the elimination ofwaste aimed at ever improving quality, cost, productivity, safety and morale. The result is greater satisfaction for thecustomers, employees and investors.

Starting last year, the project hasbeen rolled out in two stages: The firstpart consisted of a detailedpresentation about the basis of thephilosophy to the management groupin Aftersales. Part two then saw thesemanagers pass the information to theirrespective teams.

The practical implementation of theproject started in January this year soASEA is now up and running. The

company is now identifying areas ofimprovement and evaluating the nextsteps through the PDCA process: Plan,Do, Check and Act. Paul Bradshaw,Aftersales Manager at Aebi Schmidtsays: “The overall idea behind thisproject is that by identifyingimprovements in the workplace andprocess flow, both the company andthe customers will benefit from greaterefficiency.”

Master TechniciansThe company’s other initiative involvesthe Master Technicians. Four fieldengineers have now been trained toenhance the company’s training supportboth to customers and the company’sown team members. “We plan toextend the Master technician role intothe workshop areas as they couldbecome mentors to our apprentices. Infact, we intend taking one or possiblytwo apprentices from the 2015/16group,” says Paul.

Continuing with the internalchanges, the workshop team has beenrestructured and now includes a TeamLeader, Tony Walsham, who will beresponsible for closer day-to-day controlwithin the workshop in terms of projectmanagement.Tony’s appointment hasfreed up time for Glenn Smith (Wolfie),Workshop Supervisor, to concentrate onhigher level project management.
