A pastor was having trouble with his congregation; they couldn't agree on anything. The Chair of Deacons said, "Pastor, this can't continue. There has to be a conference, and we have to settle all areas of dispute once and for all." The pas- tor agreed. At the appointed time the pastor, the Chair of deacons, and 10 deacons met around a mag- nificent mahogany table in the conference room. One by one the issues were dealt with and on each issue, it became more and more apparent that the pastor was a lonely voice in the wilderness. The Chair of Deacons said, "Enough of this. Let's vote and allow the majority to rule." He passed out slips of paper and each one made their mark. The votes were collect- ed and the president said, "You may examine them, Pastor. It is 11 to 1 against you. We have the majority." Offended, the pastor rose to his feet and said, "So, now you think because of the vote that you're right and I'm wrong. Well, that's not so. I stand here," and he raised his arms impres- sively while looking heavenward, "and call upon God Almighty to give us a sign that I'm right and you're wrong." No sooner were the words out of his mouth when there was a deafening clap of thunder and a brilliant flash of lightning that struck the mahogany table and cracked it in two. The room was filled with smoke and fumes, and the Chair and the deacons were hurled to the floor. Surrounded by rubble the pastor stood erect and untouched, his eyes and smile flash- ing with triumph. Slowly, the Chair lifted himself out of the rubble. His hair was singed, his glasses were hanging from one ear, his clothing was in disarray. Finally he said, "All right, 11 to 2. But we still have the majority." Unity isn't easy. Most of us have never learned how to disagree in love, or how to love those with whom we disagree. We're like the poet who wrote: "To dwell above with saints we love, That will be grace and glory. To live below with saints we know; Well, that's another story!" Unity isn't easy. But Jesus not only prayed for it, He modeled it for us. Remember when the disciples came to Him complaining about the people who were preaching and doing signs and wonders in Jesus' name but weren't part of the crowd of disciples? They were ready to run them out of town or call down lightning upon their heads. Jesus told the disciples not to stop them and said, "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit." Christian unity is not determined by whether we agree with each other about every inter- pretation of scripture or doctrine or form of church government. Christian unity IS deter- mined by whether we love one another, and whether we reflect the love of God in Christ for the world. God help us to be shining examples of Christian unity through love for one another. In God’s Grace, David Vess Swift Creek Chronicler June 2017

Deacon Update At the regular monthly meeting, May 2, 2017, in addition to the Family Ministry concerns, the deacons considered the following

items:

*Regan Chuhran has been hired as our new pianist. She will begin on Wed. May 3rd.

*Recent situations have been impacted by the change in our cemetery policy. The deacons waived the burial plot fee for one

of these cases.

*The Youth Program Committee is creating a survey/questionnaire to be distributed to parents, grandparents, and others in-

volved in the children and youth programs regarding the current state of our youth ministry and how best to serve our chil-

dren and families in the future.

*Construction Committee reported the construction phase of the project has begun in earnest with demolition complete in

the sanctuary and well under way in the bathrooms. The first bill for construction has been received. Dr. Livengood discussed

the current state of the project’s finances and fundraising efforts. Approximately $66,000 remains to be borrowed to cover

the cost and contingency. On the fundraising side, Marilyn Ferguson is heading up the pledge campaign.

*The Library Committee gave a report regarding Right Now Media, an online video resource with a large library of Bible stud-

ies, Christian children’s programs, movies, etc.

The service has a monthly subscription fee that would give the entire church family access to their content. The service is $79

per month; however, a donation has been offered to cover the first 3 months.

Discussion followed and the deacons voted unanimously to forward the Library Committee’s recommendation on to the Fi-

nance Committee.

*Candidates for the 2017-2018 nominating committee were recommended, discussed, and voted on.

*Pastor Vess went over the calendars for May and June and discussed noteworthy or unusual items.

Women On Mission News

Music Ministry News

By: Heather Hills

May has been an exciting time for the music ministry at SCBC as we continue to worship together in the

fellowship hall. The handbell choir continues rehearsing new music in preparation for the dedication of

the newly-renovated sanctuary. The choir will be taking a much-needed and well-deserved summer break

from June through August this year. This doesn’t mean that worship is going to take a backseat, though!

On the contrary, I welcome the opportunity to worship the Lord in a variety of ways in the choir’s ab-

sence! I hope you will join us as we sing a new song to the Lord each week in worship. It is always amaz-

ing to see what the Lord can do! Heather Hills, Minister of Music

Sandy Jones, WOM Director In His Service,

WOM is currently looking forward to our annual church Picnic on Wednesday, June 7 at Montague Lake. Sign up

sheets to bring a side dish have been distributed to Sunday School teachers. If you have not signed up and would

like to bring something please let Lynne or Sandy know. We are also looking forward to assisting with Vacation

Bible School in June and continuing our support of Operation Christmas Child and The Christian Life Home.

During the month of June WOM is collecting the following items for Operation Christmas Child: tee shirts (age

2-14), markers, colored pencils, crayons, coloring books and drawing paper. Our shoebox packing party is

scheduled for Sunday, September 24th. Due to recent changes please note that toothpaste is no longer allowed.

Robin’s Roundtable The month of June is a busy and fun-filled time here at Swift Creek. On Sunday, June 4th during worship we will recog-

nize our 2017 graduates and pray God’s blessings upon their future. Next on Wednesday, June 7th at 5:30 pm is

our annual church picnic at Montague Lake hosted by the Brotherhood and W.O.M. We hope everyone here at Swift

Creek will join us for food, fellowship and fun. We will serve hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings and wonderful

desserts. Be sure to bring your swimsuits for a dip in the water. Please parents keep an eye on your children as they

enjoy the water. Vacation Bible School, Galactic Starveyors Sunday, June 25 through Thursday, June 29 is our next event from 5:30 pm to

8:30 pm. We will serve supper at 5:30. This is our opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ with children. Invite a

child to enjoy the fun and learn about Jesus. We still need volunteers if only for one evening. Please keep all of these

events, the volunteers and children in your prayers. Let the Summer Fun Begin!
