Bacterial Infection In research led by Michael Hamblin of Mass. Gen.Hospital and Harvard Medical School, mice with surgically induced wounds

were dosed with bioluminescent bacteria to create potentially lethal infections.Utilizing a 665 nm laser diode photodynamic therapy (Low Level Laser Therapy)the researchers found that "infected wounds healed significantly faster with thePDT method. Laser irradiation of tissue cultures has shown that units of light energy(photons) are absorbed by enzymes, which react to light within the cell. Visiblered light is absorbed within the mitochondria and the infrared light is absorbedat the cell membrane.

In a mammalian cell, this results in a change in membrane permeability,increased ATP levels and increased DNA production. The photons picked up bythe cell membrane result in improved membrane stability and increased activityof the ATP dependent Na/K pump. Because cell metabolism is influenced by

Na/K movement across the membrane, increasing the gradient will affect theflow of ions and hence the overall metabolism of the cell.

On a tissue level, it has been shown that irradiation by laser light results inincreased collagen and epithelial production and production of new capillariesand an increase in density of the capillary bed.

Reduction of pain and inflammation results from this treatment, as does thestimulation of nerve regeneration, muscle relaxation and atonicity (lack ofmuscle tone). There is also an indication that laser light therapy helps to

Photobioactivation - Light is the energy of life

Photobioactivation is a term applied to a light stimulus that initiates and/oraccelerates a physiological response. Other stimuli used in medicine, forexample, are temperature, ultrasound, electrical power, electromagnetic fields,etc.

In 1965 the Russians discovered that a single frequency light in a laser can stimulateDNA in damaged cell tissue.It could be infrared, red, blue, or green, as long as it wassingle although, as you move toward the red end of the spectrum, the rate of cellularregeneration increased. A single frequency in the green range might improve kidneyfunction by 40 times, while the red would be about 4,000 times faster. Over the yearsthey found that infrared, red, and violet wavelengths were the fastest way toregenerate tissue. Recovery from injuries went from ten days to two days!The Scalar Wave Laser Probes come in all three colors/wavelengths.

When the Russians used apulsed laser light, the tissue healed rapidly. If they used acontinuous beam, they found that it sedated the cell and relieved the pain. When a

single frequency pulsed light hit the cell, it actually stimulated the cell to start producingmore protein than it normally does, and as a result, the cell would heal. Even when theyremoved the light, the cell continued healing. The continuous beamhad a reverseeffect. In the mid-seventies, at the University of Chicago, researchers discovered that theaverage wavelength of human cell tissue is between 600 and 720 nm; 660 is themid-point. Since red light ranges fro 625 to 700 nm, this is why the red lightprobe is so effective for healing skin issues. And since red is the color of iron, italso explains why the red frequency absorbs better in hemoglobin.

Low Level Lasers that deliver under 500 milliwatts (mW) power output do nothave a thermal effect. This means that they are extremely safe and provoke noadverse skin reactions or sensations during therapy. Laser Therapy is a softand gentle, non-thermal therapy without side effects. surgical application of LASERS, which heat or burn, coagulate, vaporize andcarbonize tissue with their high-energy rates (from 3 to 50 Watts).

Photochemical Effect

The laser energy is absorbed by metabolically active pigments of themitochondria in various cutaneous and subcutaneous layers of the skin: thisinvolves two enzymes of the oxidation chain, Cytochrome a/a3 andFlavoprotein.

When the proper wavelengths are applied and absorbed, it is supposed that thechanges in the stereochemical conformation induced by an electro magneticfield leads to an increase in activity and improves the concentration of ATP byup to 200%. In addition, an increase in oxygen and glucose metabolism isobserved. A significant effect of LLLT is an optimized function of the Na-Kpump at the cell membrane, an increased protein synthesis (prostaglandin,enzyme) and a significantly higher rate of mitosis.

Arthritis.The arthritides (osteo and rheumatoid forms) have been a populartarget disorder for researchers in the last decade of cold laser investigations.The results of several well designed randomized clinical trials have givenclinicians good reason to be encouraged with this form of treatment. They applied an a priori protocolaccording to methods recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration. Theirconclusions were that low level laser therapy (LLLT) should be considered for

short term relief of pain in morning stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis

The general consensus among clinicians using LLLT for conditions having aninflammatory component is that significant benefits can be accrued by thosepatients treated with cold laser.
