NEWSLETTER24 MAY 2019 | VOLUME 43 NO. 15 TERM 2 - WEEK 4 - 2019
Principal Awards: Congratulations to the following students who received Awards this week at our College Assembly: Ella Roberts (Year 7), Ryan Burgess (Year 8) and Hollie Ebb, Haylee Collins and Bailey O'Mara (Year 12). Principal Awards recognise student effort and achievement whilst Attendance Awards commend consistency and commitment to being at school. It is important that we publicly recognise sustained effort in all that we do at the College.
Enrolment Interviews for 2021: Year 7 enrolment interviews for 2021 were held this week. We have had strong enquiries from families requesting positions within the College for the year 2021. In order to deal with this increased demand the College interviews all families and we apply the Enrolment Policy as set out by Sydney Catholic Schools. On a personal note it is a good opportunity to meet students and families. I continue to be heartened by the positive feedback that families give toward the College, especially those who already have students enrolled in older years.
Bosco Community Feast Day: Last Tuesday the College celebrated our Salesian community here at Engadine. We began with a special Founder’s Day mass in the Valdocco Centre. Fr Michael Court spoke of the importance of our Salesian story and the work of St John Bosco. Surprisingly, there was a special visit from ‘Don Bosco’ who spoke of Salesian values. This was then followed by a gala day where all students and staff participated in a fun-run-walk and a variety of activities that raised monies for Salesian schools in Samoa. Lunch was provided by Years 9 and 10 Commerce classes and the Social Justice Committee who raised money in support of our Salesian Samoan schools. This was followed by the much-awaited ‘Battle of the Bands’ to round off the day. Everybody had a great day! Thanks to the many students and staff who helped organise the various functions and activities on the day. It was great to see all the students and staff enjoying themselves in the true Salesian spirit of Don Bosco.
Student Success: Last week (13 to 18 May) Hayley Slocombe from Year 12, one of Australia’s top ranked junior wheelchair tennis players, competed in the World Team Cup in Tel Aviv, Israel. The World Team Cup is the International Tennis Federation’s wheelchair equivalent of the Davis and Fed Cup and features the best wheelchair tennis nations in men, women, quad and junior divisions. Congratulations to Hayley and her team in becoming the World Champions of BNP Paribas World Team Cup Israel 2019. What an outstanding achievement; the Bosco Community is very proud of you Hayley. Here is a short video that captures their win https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EXHl4VX3C8

Feast of Mary Help of Christians - Patroness of AustraliaToday, 24 May, the Catholic Church celebrates the special feast dedicated to Mary. It is in times of difficulty and trouble that we turn to Mary for help. It had special meaning to the struggling and troubled infant church two centuries ago in Australia. In the priestless days it was largely the Rosary that kept the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary, and was the first nation to choose her, under the title of Help of Christians, as Principal Patroness. Reaffirming our devotion to Mary, the first Catholic Church was known as “St Mary’s Chapel”. This is where the present Cathedral now sits. Work began in 1868, and is dedicated under the patronage of the Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians. Equally, she is the patroness of our own Salesians. Don Bosco had a great devotion to Mary and as such named his order of nuns Sisters of Mary, Help of Christians. As “Help of Christians” we may ask the Blessed Virgin Mary especially to pray for protection from things that threaten our peace and our freedom - personally as well as nationally.

College Assembly This week we held our first college assembly for Term 2. It was a celebration of many of the wonderful events and activities that are conducted at Bosco. We had presentations about Relay for Life, Oz Bosco, the Year 8 Camp and I-Stem. Mrs Loader provided further information about the new College building names of the Valdocco Centre and the Pindari Steps, and how they link to the life and work of Don Bosco, and we had a wonderful performance by Alex Hayston, who drummed to “I Shot the Sheriff”. Additionally, five student received Principal’s Awards. It was noted that, despite it only being week four of the term, there have already been a significant number of great achievements and contributions by our students.
Staff Spirituality Day A reminder the Staff Development Day for Term 2 is being conducted next Tuesday, 28 May. It is a pupil free day and no student supervision will be available at the College.

'Batyr is a for purpose preventative mental health organisation, driven by young people, for young people. They give a voice to the elephant in the room by smashing the stigma around mental health and empowering young people to reach out for support. On Thursday 16 May, speakers from Batyr visited the Year 11 students. They shared their lived experiences with mental health and delivered vital educational information surrounding mental health in an engaging way. Two speakers read out their own personal stories surrounding their mental health journey. Their stories were extremely empowering and they revealed that no young person should be ashamed to seek support from others. At the beginning of the program, we were asked to think of words that came to mind when hearing the words “mental health”. Only negative words like sadness, depression and anxiety first came to mind when we all shared our answers. At the end of the program we were asked the same question again. Instead of negative words crossing our mind they were all positive words like seeking support and wellbeing. The program changed our mindset on the term mental health and taught us to seek support from others instead of keeping it to ourselves.' Written by Chloe Rigoni
Based on the feedback from the year group after the presentation was delivered:
79% of students reported being more likely to seek help if they needed it.
86% of students said they felt engaged or very engaged.
94% of students thought it was important to share real stories about mental health.
*Only around one in four (22%) of young people experiencing a mental health problem will seek professional help
WHAT STUDENTS SAID:
“Thank you for making this presentation possible, I really learned a tonne about mental health and how I can help my friends.”
“The program was really intriguing. It was great hearing another side to mental health, not just the negatives which we usually hear.”
“Thank you for inspiring me to seek help :)”

HOW TO USE APOSTROPHES(The apostrophe was introduced into English in the 16th century in imitation of French practice.)
Apostrophes are used to:
• Indicate possession (the child’s lunch)
• Show letters have been omitted in contracted words (can’t, it’s)
• Avoid confusion (A’s are the highest marks - avoids confusion with the word as)
Apostrophes have nothing to do with the plural – FAQs, not FAQ’s, bananas not banana’s.
POSSESSIVE APOSTROPHES Apostrophes are used to indicate ‘belonging to’ or ‘of’.
• the boy’s game – the game belonging to the boy
• the choir’s plans – the plans of the choir
Apostrophes of possession often cause problems, particularly when indicating joint or separate possession.
JOINT OR SEPARATE POSSESSIONIf two people jointly own something, an apostrophe is only needed on the second name, e.g.
• my mother and father’s cars
• John and Margaret’s cars
However, if the ownership is separate, use an apostrophe for each name, e.g.
• my mother’s and father’s cars
• John’s and Margaret’s cars
Not everyone agrees that joint possession only needs one apostrophe, so it is sometimes easier to rephrase the statement, e.g.
• my parents’ car instead of my mother and father’s car
• cars belonging to John and Margaret instead of John and Margaret’s cars.

Sleep Problems in Teens and Tweens...and how to fix them! Dr Chris Seton Paediatric and Adolescent Sleep Physician, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research
From Chris... Good sleep, exercise, & optimal nutrition, are the 3 so-called “pillars” of good health in teens & tweens. Sleep deprivation is a common, but frequently overlooked health problem in teens & tweens with 70% of Australian teenagers chronically sleep deprived on school days. Sleep deprivation has a negative effect on learning and wellbeing, impacting memory, body image, sense of humour, stress levels, family relationships & even ethical judgements. Most of our kids place little value on sleep, &
generally are poor sleep managers. Therefore, educationalists, parents, & health professionals all have an important role in detecting & resolving sleep deprivation. This presentation details the multiple factors that conspire, in the “busy bee” lives of our teens & tweens, to deprive them of sleep, & cause them to be tired, grumpy and moody. Particular types of sleep problems, and the science behind them, will be explained. This solution focused talk shows parents how to detect sleep problems, & how to implement practical strategies that build resilient, high quality sleep, with the ultimate aim of providing protection from stress-induced mood disorders, while achieving optimal school- learning outcomes.

On Wednesday, 15 May 2019, the Year 10 Commerce class visited the Downing Centre and the Justice & Police Museum in Sydney. After arriving by train, we walked to the Downing Centre where we were greeted
by our tour guide Harley from the Rule of Law Institute. He gave us an informative insight into how the courts work and the types of cases they get on a day-to-day basis. We were lucky enough to watch a few cases; all were very simple like parking tickets and drink driving. We also watched a few cases regarding drugs and assault. Some of the students were in a fairly gruesome case with some very detailed description of the assault which resulted in Mrs Cutcliffe and even the magistrate suggesting that the students should leave the court as the details were hard to listen to. This experience highlighted the less glamorous nature of the legal system and the work of lawyers.
Around lunch time, we ventured to the Justice & Police Museum where we got to role play a court proceeding in one of Sydney's oldest local courts near Circular Quay. We then split up into two groups and got a guided tour of where the accused would stay before their hearing, as well as a look into the work of the forensic team back in the early 1900s. Cameron Laybutt from Year 7 is starring in the musical Cinderella at the Engadine Community Centre. Here is what Cameron has to say about the musical ...
'The musical Cinderella is one of the best musicals I've been in; except for Mary Poppins. The show started on Friday 17 May for the carriage cast. I’m in the slipper cast which includes 4 white mice, a fox and a raccoon (I know it is weird that there are a fox and a raccoon and not a goose and 2 lizards). The audition process is usually long, however this audition only took a day to decide who is in it. When I found out I was selected I was beside myself. The rehearsals are very long; they go from 7:30 pm to 11:20 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays while on Sundays they go from 12pm to 7:50pm. The cast includes: Lauren Lofberg as CINDERELLA, Louis Vinciguerra as PRINCE CHRISTOPHER, Ellie
Year 7 Student starring in Cinderella with Engadine Musical Society
Phillips as GRACE, Alexis Hutchinson as JOY, Anne-Marie McAdams as the STEPMOTHER, Rozlyne Howell as the FAIRY GODMOTHER, Haji Myrteza as LIONEL, Jenny Barker as QUEEN CONSTANTINE and Rickard Roach as KING MAXIMILLIIAM and of course me, one of the white mice. The show goes for 2 hours and if you like music you found the right musical because this production has lots of it.'
The production is almost over, the next performances are on: Friday 24 May 8pm, Saturday 25 May at 2pm and 8pmSunday 26 at 2pm.

GIRLS AFL TEAMOn Wednesday 22 March the Years 9 and 10 Girls AFL
team travelled to Lane Cove to represent the College.
The girls played extremely well and were up against
some very tough opposition. Special mentions go out
to utility midfielder Sienna who barely missed a tackle
all day, Indiana for the 'bump' of the tournament and
Tiane for her solid defence. I was extremely proud of
how the girls played; we learnt a lot and are looking
forward to continuing to improve throughout the
Friday winter sport season. Overall the team finished
5th out of 13 teams, an excellent result!
