PG AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF STUDIES 2018-2019
The Board of Studies meeting was held on 03.02.2018 at 10.00 a.m.in the PG
and Research Department of Mathematics to discuss the changes in the B.Sc., M.Sc and
M.Phil syllabi.
The experts present were
1. Dr. A. Nagoor Gani, Associate Professor, PG and Research Department of Mathematics,
Jamal Mohamed College(Autonomous), Trichy.
2. Dr. S. Koilraj, Associate Professor, PG and Research Department of Mathematics,
St. Joseph’s College(Autonomous), Trichy.
3. Dr. M. Maragatham, Associate Professor, PG and Research Department of Mathematics,
Periyar E.V.R College(Autonomous), Trichy.
The experts made a number of suggestions during the course of the meeting.
Agenda:
1. Swapping of courses in the semesters IV, V and VI for the programme B.Sc
Mathematics.
2. Introduction of a new non major elective course titled “Discrete Mathematics” for PG
programmes other than Mathematics.
3. Introduction of two course optional papers for the programme M.Phil Mathematics.
4. Minor revisions of a few topics in B.Sc and M.Sc Mathematics syllabus.
Purpose of revision:
1. For consecutive learning of topics in B.Sc Mathematics in tune with the need of the
hour for a stronger foundation.
2. To build skills in Mathematics for PG programmes other than Mathematics.
3. The courses were introduced in order to develop research methodology among students
to pursue further research.
Suggestions and Revisions:
The course pattern and syllabus for UG, PG and M.Phil courses were presented in the board
for review and suggestions.
The following were the revisions made:
I B.Sc Mathematics (Semesters I &II):
Major Core 3: Analytical Geometry of Two and Three Dimensions
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Contents of units I, II are to be changed
Straight line in Unit I and Circle in Unit II (Chapter IV- Sections from 1 to 10).
For strong foundation and consecutive learning.
II B.Sc Mathematics (Semesters III &IV):
Allied 6: Programming in C is replaced by SPSS Package.
To provide a better application oriented software cum package.
III B.Sc Mathematics (Semesters V&VI):
Major Core 9: Graph Theory
Title to be changed as “Major Core 9: Introduction to Graph Theory”.
To emphasize the inclusions of foundations.
Major Elective 3: Programming in C++
Course to be changed to “Major Elective 3 :Programming in C for Numerical Methods ”.
To highlight the application of C programming.
Allied Papers:
Allied 1: Business Mathematics (for Commerce students)
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Unit V- Travelling Salesman problem is to be included.
For more clarity in the topic.
Allied 1: Business Mathematics and Statistics (for Commerce - vocational students),
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Unit I – Matrices is to be introduced instead of Differentiation,
Unit II – Assignment problem, Hungarian method is to be removed,
Unit III – Cumulative frequency is to be removed and Measures of central tendency,
Measures of Dispersion (Range, Quartile deviation and Mean deviation) from Unit IV
are shifted to Unit III.
For strong foundation and consecutive learning.
The following papers from II and III B.Sc Mathematics were accepted by the experts and a few
revisions were made.
(i) In Semester IV, Major Core 6: Real Analysis – II
(ii) In Semester V, Major Core 7: Differential Equations , Laplace Transforms and
Fourier Series
(iii) In Semester V, Major Core 10: Modern Algebra - I
(iv) In Semester VI, Major Core 12: Modern Algebra – II
For consecutive learning of topics in tune with the need of the hour.
I M.Sc Mathematics (Semesters I &II):
Major Core 2: Ordinary Differential Equations
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
The prescribed text book authored by ‘George F. Simmons’ is suggested and complete revision
of the content to be done.
For advancement in the PG level.
Major Core 4: Graph Theory
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Unit V – Directed Graphs Chapter 7: Sections 7.1 and 7.3 are to be included.
For advancement in the PG level.
Major Core 5: Complex Analysis
The reference books authored by Dr. Karunakaran and Dr.Venkatachalabathy are suggested.
Non Major Elective 1: Quantitative Techniques
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Unit I is named as Formulation of LPP and Graphical method.
Unit II is omitted.
Units III, IV and V are rearranged as Units II, III and IV respectively.
Unit V is to be replaced by Unit I.
For advancement in the PG level.
The following papers from I M.Sc Mathematics were accepted by the experts and a few
revisions were made.
Major Core 5: ‘Complex Analysis’ and Semester II, Major Core 8: ‘Operations Research’ will
be interchanged.
For consecutive application in accordance to the need of the hour.
New Courses added:
In addition to the above revisions in the syllabus, a new non major elective course titled
Discrete Mathematics was introduced for PG programme other than Mathematics.
II M.Sc Mathematics (Semesters III &IV):
Major Elective 1: Theory of Fuzzy Sets
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Fuzzy LPP in unit V is shifted to Unit IV
Fuzzy Transportation problem is deleted from Unit V.
Fuzzy relations form Unit V authored by Dr. A. NagoorGani.
For advancement in the PG level.
NME 2: Statistical Methods
The presented syllabus was accepted by the experts and a few revision were given as follows
Standard Deviation, Skewness and Kurtosis are shifted to Unit II from Unit I.
For Unit III; the content will be Binomial Distribution-Poisson Distribution- Normal
Distribution – Mean and Variance of Binomial, Poisson and Normal Distributions.
Unit IV is omitted and the content will be from unit V,tests for large samples are shifted to
Unit IV.
T and F tests for small samples are included in Unit V.
For consecutive learning and advancement in the PG level.
M.Phil:
Course II: Algebra and Analysis:
Homotopy authored by James Munkers is to be introduced in unit V and’ positive Borel
Measures’ from unit III is to be deleted.
To emphasize the topological properties in Algebra and analysis.
New Courses added:
Two new elective(optional) courses titled Inventory Management, Inventory and Logistics
Management was introduced.
The chairman thanked the members for their participation and contribution.
Based on the suggestions given by various stakeholders, courses which focused on skill
development, employability and entrepreneurship were introduced to make the students ready
to be effective employees or dynamic/ smart employers. The details of these courses are given
