News For Our Parishes

A Message From Fr. Tony Faith Formation News It has been a while since I had the opportunity to sit down and write a bulletin article. With a wonderful Christmas Season behind us, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who gave of their time and talents to make each of our churches so beautiful and welcoming for the celebration of our Savior’s birth. As we enter into this new calendar year, I hope that we can grow together in boldly living out God’s call in our lives. My biggest hope for this coming year is for all of us to work together to revitalize our high school youth program. It is up to all of us as servants of the Lord, to encourage and support each other in answering God’s call in our lives, especially our youth. By virtue of our baptism, we have been called to be servants of the Lord. There are no excuses or exemptions from this call. Our task is to live out the call to serve, by growing in faith and holiness. As long as we have the love of Christ alive within us, then we will be good and faithful servants. And with God’s mercy and grace, we will one day join the communion of saints giving glory to God, forever. Also, this weekend I ask you to join me in welcoming the students of St. John the Evangelist Regional Catholic School who are with us to speak about their school experiences and promote Catholic Schools Week. God Bless, Fr. Tony

Q P P G will meet on Tuesday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church. The program includes prayers, the Rosary with meditations, songs and information. Everyone is welcome!

M S , “A M S ” Eucharistic Adoration is held at St. John the Evangelist Church every Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. In order to continue Adoration at St. John the Evangelist Church, we must have dedicated people who are committed to be present for holy hour every Thursday. Currently all women and only one man are answering this call. Please consider volunteering one peaceful, quiet hour with the Lord every Thursday—or even for one hour each month. We hope that many more men and women still step up to help save this beautiful, ancient devotion to the Lord. A substitute list is provided for necessary absences. Jesus said, “This is my body given up for you”. To volunteer or for questions, please call Mary Catherine Wallace at (724)437-1561.

Andrea and Rita would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped with decorating and “un-decorating” our church for the Christmas Season. Your generosity with your time and talents is truly appreciated! May God richly reward all of you!

We welcome Libby Jane Yohman, daughter of Brad & Lauren Yohman, into the Catholic Community of faith. May our community embrace this child and may our word and example be a reflection of God’s love for her. Let us offer our joy-filled prayers and congratulations as a sign of our support and welcome.

Candle Memorial

This weekend we move back into Ordinary Time. This time may seem unimportant especially after the celebration throughout the Christmas Season, but our mission is important during this time. We are to look for God in our daily life and share his presence with others just as we heard in Psalm 40 today. We sang the refrain “Here I am Lord, here I am; I come to do your will.” In the verses, we hear the actions of an obedient servant. “Sacrifice or offering you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me.” “Now you know that I will not be silent, I’ll always sing your praise.” In the Gospel from John, we hear about Jesus’ baptism through the eyes of John the Baptist. “I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” This phrase along with the baptism account from Matthew Gospel last week make up the refrain of the meditation hymn, When Jesus Came to Jordan. The refrain, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, this is God’s Chosen One.” is boldly proclaimed after each verse. So how about us? Do we answer the call of God as in the psalm with here I am, I come to do your will? Do we testify and boldly proclaim the Good News as John the Baptist did? Do we show our obedience by how we live our lives? We may not be called to do things as great as Isaiah, John the Baptist, or Jesus, but we are called to respond to God’s call, each of us in our own way. We only need to be open to hearing God’s voice in our hearts and to sharing our faith by how we live our lives. – Michelle

When asked, “What would save the world?”, Mother Teresa replied: “My answer is prayer. What we need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in holy hours of prayer.”

SAINT AGNES ( 304) Feast Day: January 21

Writing about Saint Agnes in the year 377, Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, declared: “This is a virgin’s birthday into heaven: let us imitate her chastity! And a martyr’s heavenly birthday: let

us offer ourselves in sacrifice!” Chastity: mastery of oneself in order to give of oneself whether in the priestly, religious, married, or single state. Sacrifice: “to make holy,” to set someone or something apart for service. Ambrose knew these virtues indispensable for discipleship, but challenging to practice in his world—or our own. Barely a teenager, Agnes faced gruesome tortures bravely and, when ordered to worship pagan gods, boldly made the Sign of the Cross instead. Thus, her youthful courage strengthened adult believers who wavered under persecution or grew indifferent when persecutions passed. To bestow on Agnes its highest honor and keep her witness fresh in believers’ hearts, the Church inscribed her name at the heart of the Eucharistic liturgy, in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), until Vatican II the Roman Church’s only Eucharistic Prayer. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. E A Let’s take a closer look at the sacred vessel, the Monstrance, that houses the Body, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord. The Monstrance draws all eyes to the Sacred Host that is seemingly surrounded by rays, like the sun. Similarly, we each are called to be a “Living Monstrance”, radiating the presence of the Lord who dwells in us. The Monstrance is surmounted by a Cross… what does this tell us? Let us look at Jesus in the Monstrance, who humbles Himself to come before us in a piece of

bread. Let us reflect on our own life’s situations that call us to humility. Are we humble, as God wants us to be, to bear our crosses daily? Other virtues such as patience, temperance, self-control and piety will soon follow. St. Mary Nativity Parish hosts Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday from Noon—4:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us in quiet prayer and meditation before the Blessed Sacrament.

Laura was a 12-year old Chilean girl with a deep love for God. Weakened by physical abuse from the man her mother was living with, Laura passed away in 1904 as she called her mother to repentance. On the day of Laura’s funeral, her mother returned to the Sacraments and began a new life. Blessed Laura Vicuna is the patron of abuse victims, having herself experienced physical abuse.

E A The more time you spend with Jesus, the more you will come away feeling renewed and healed. Miracles of conversion, peace, discovery of vocations, answers to prayers, physical healings, and many other wonderful things happen where and when the Lord Jesus is adored in the Blessed Sacrament.
