News For Our Parishes

A Message From Fr. Tony Sacrament Preparation As we begin this Lenten Season, we are reminded of the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During these next forty days we are asked to follow His example so that our faith in Him may grow

and multiply. This year, help our faith communities Grow in the Lord through your generous stewardship in the 2020 Diocesan Lenten Appeal. Your participation helps support many ministries of the Diocese of Greensburg. “Grow in the Lord” and donate today to the 2020 Diocesan Lenten Appeal at DioceseofGreensburg.org/GROW. The projects that will benefit from the 2020 DLA are featured on the individual parish pages. God Bless — Fr. Tony.

C D L During Lent we approach the season with a sense of simplicity. We strip back the décor and the color of the Altar linens and vestments change to violet. These changes set the tone and make it feel different than Ordinary Time or other Liturgical Seasons. Lenten music also has a different feel. During the Introductory Rites, the Gloria is omitted to reflect the solemn tone of the season. We sing a Gospel Acclamation such as “Praise to you, Word of God, Lord Jesus Christ!” or “Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory!” rather than an “Alleluia!”. With these changes we are liturgically longing for that time when we can again sing Glory to God in the Highest and Alleluia! Another change concerning music…once the priest has given the Final Blessing, he will reverence the Altar and depart in silence with light instrumentals. This silence rather than a message of sending forth mirrors the message of the Lenten season.

J C : Members will meet Wednesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. The guest speaker will be Dr. Rebecca Maddas. S . V D P F C : The third Sunday of each month is designated for SJE parishioners to participate in food collections for SVDP. The Christian Mothers and Jefferson Club will coordinate these food collections on the third Sunday. The weekend prior (March 7-8) SVDP bags will be distributed, along with a list of suggested items needed in the SVDP Food Pantry. Bags should be returned and placed on the outside of the Altar rail March 14-15. Help may be needed on Mondays to take the food collections to SVDP.

Today’s readings all have a clear connection to one another. The 1st Reading from Genesis is familiar to all; the temptation of Adam and Eve by the serpent. In the 2nd Reading, St. Paul contrasts Adam’s disobedience and subsequent consequences with Jesus’ obedience and the gift of salvation for the world. In the Gospel we hear Matthew’s account of Jesus being tempted in the desert. What can we take away from these readings? This Lenten Season can be a time of fasting, praying, and a time for us to reflect more deeply on the temptations in our own lives. Just as the apple is the metaphor for temptation and cause for sin for Adam and Eve; we need to find the source of our own temptations and cause for sin. Let’s face it we all have apples. Once we can admit that we’ve made mistakes, we can turn back to God and ask for his mercy and forgiveness. This Lent through our fasting and prayer, let’s seek to fill the spiritual voids within us. Let’s repent for the times we have failed to resist temptation. Let’s be grateful for God’s mercy and salvation. And most importantly, to avoid repeating failures, let’s prayerfully consider the question — “What is my apple?” - Michelle For the full article visit our Facebook or webpage.
