Living the life of lavender luxury

At Busy Bee Farm in Taberna-cle, visitors are able to pick
theirown lavender, a plant that can beused in a variety of
ways.
Lavender really is a versatileproduct, Toni Price, owner ofBusy
Bee Farm, said. You canhang it and dry to use it in a bou-quet. You
can use it to make sa-chets and other crafts. You can re-ally make
a lot of things with it.
Lavender can also be used forculinary reasons to add a little
fla-vor to simple dishes.
Lavender is really cominginto its own with culinary. Thereare
lots of different uses, Price
said. I use it for a lavender saltrub which can be used on
pork,fish or chicken. I also make alavender sugar that I use in
cook-ies and pound cake. You dontneed a lot, but it gives
everythinga little twist.
Lavender is a Mediterranean
plant primarily grown in thesouthwest, Texas and
Washing-ton.
Price believes she has one ofthe only farms in New Jersey
thatgrows the plant and one of thefew on the East Coast.
Lavender is one of the mostdifficult plants, but the
simplest,Price said. I know that soundsconflicting. There is not a
lot ofinformation, and a lot of the in-formation is conflicting.
Its diffi-cult for me because I am one ofthe few lavender farms in
NewJersey and on the East Coast.Each site is different and its a
lotof trial and error.
The lavender plant doesnt re-quire a lot of work to grow it.
It needs loose sandy soil, fullsun, no fertilizer and very
littlewater.
Its a perennial so it growsevery year and will bloom forabout 10
to 15 years, Price said.It blooms now, and this year itwas actually
three weeks early. It
does need to be pruntended to.
Price started puttinhours into Busy Bee in 2006 after she left
hcareer.

Many these days are hoping tofill their stomachs with
healthyeats by filling their dinner plateswith local, organic
produce andmeats.
But the question that begs to beasked is, Well, where did it
comefrom?
If you shop at the BurlingtonCounty Farmers Market inMoorestown,
some of those eggsor chickens, if they were stillalive, could have
basically walkedto the weekly outdoor market ontheir own.
Each Saturday morning, JoannDarmo, along with her
husband,brother and father-in-law, takeCox Road to Hartford Road,
arriv-ing 2.1 miles from their originand approximately five
minuteslater at 500 Centerton Rd., the siteof the Burlington County
Com-munity Agricultural Center,home of the market, now in its
fifth year.The Darmos children are part
of the fifth generation in the fam-ily to work the farm.
Local is a big thing here. Thefarmers market gets it the
dayafter its picked, Darmo said.
This is the fourth year the Dar-
mos have sold crops at the mar-ket. If you head to the market
onSaturday, you can expect to findthe usual suspects such as
toma-toes, white corn, peppers, egg-plant and cucumbers at
theirpeak from Darmos Farm. Thefarm also carries peaches
andmelons.
Darmo said the buying localmentality has helped business atthe
farms stand, which is openevery day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Its cut down on diesel fuel,transportation costs and time,Darmo
said. Its a big deal forfarmers and its helped us.
Is 7.7 miles still local enoughfor you?
Thought so. Thats the distancefrom Hunters Vegetable Farm
inCinnaminson to the market.
The farm, owner Amy Huntersaid, has been family owned
andoperated for nine consecutivegenerations since 1760. The fami-ly
also operates a retail marketseven days a week at the 120-acre
farm at 1101 Union Landing Rd.Hunter said the best tasting
items from the farm right noware corn, cantaloupes and
water-melons. She said her familybrings an array of other
vegeta-bles to the farmers market each
