Fatherhood Initiative
Fatherhood Conversation
On Tuesday, March 10, 2020 Zeta Beta Beta partnered with
the Georgia Omega Psi Phi, Inc. State Organization, and the
Georgia Department of Human Services to conduct a
Fatherhood Conversation at the Athens-Clarke County Library
in Athens, GA. The Georgia Division of Child Support
Services administers the Fatherhood Program to help
a noncustodial parent avoid having to appear before a judge in
court. This program is an employment-based service that
focuses on providing services that can help noncustodial parents achieve self-sufficiency. It also
encourages parents to increase emotional, parental, and financial involvement in the lives of their
children. The program offers Driver’s License Reinstatement, Child support Services, GED
Enrollment, Job Training, Job Search/Placement, Volunteer Work Opportunities and Support
order modification, where applicable.
Approximately 35 non-custodial parents attended the presentation which was live
streamed on Facebook. Individuals who were not in attendance were able to ask questions via
Facebook. The Chapter contributed approximately 80 man-hours to support this program.

Zeta Beta Beta Voter Registration and Education
The Brothers of Zeta Beta Beta are committed to the mandated programs of Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity, Inc. The mandated program of Voter Registration, Education and Mobilization
(VREM) is critical to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ Movement. As chapter sought to uplift the
community through voter education, the Voter Education Committee created a flyer to empower
Brothers to be able to communicate effectively to the community at large as well as to their
families and additional Brothers of Omega. The VREM committee developed the flyer to
facilitate the conversation about the voting process and local resources in the North Georgia area.
The “Elect2Call” initiative (see below) has goal of uplifting the chapter and the community with
tools and resources to mobilize the 2020 Vote. Each Brother has been tasked with reaching out to
at least two Brothers of Omega and ask directly are they prepared to participate in the 2020 Vote
and then to contact their family and friends. The “Elect2Call” flyer serves as a call script and an
electronically distributable communication tool. The VREM committee is coordinated by
Brothers Winfred Owens and Jarvais Wilson who have contributed approximately 24-man hours
to the project.

Zeta Beta Beta Voter Education Information, page 2
You can go to your local county board of registrars' office or election office, public library, public assistance office, recruitment office, schools, and other government offices for a mail-in registration form.
Registration is offered when you renew or apply for your driver's license at Department of Driver Services.
College students can obtain Georgia voter registration forms, or the necessary forms to register in any state in the U.S., from their school registrar's office or from the office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. CHANGE OF RESIDENCE Voters are required to notify the board of registrars of their county of residence whenever they move. If you move within the same county in which you are registered to vote and don't notify the registrar at least 30 days prior to an election, you may vote in your old polling place for that election. You must file a notice of your new address. This can be done by writing to your county board of registrars' office or by submitting a new voter registration application. If you move outside the county in which you are registered to vote within 30 days of an election, you may vote in your old precinct for that election. If you move outside the county in which you are registered to vote in excess of 30 days prior to an election, you have lost your eligibility to vote in the county of your old residence. You must register to vote in your new county of residence. You will be assigned a new voting precinct and polling location. Remember, if you don't register to vote by the deadline, you cannot vote in that particular election. PRECINCT CARDS If you have misplaced or have not received your precinct card within 3 to 4 weeks of submitting your voter registration application, please contact your local county registration office to request a new precinct card or to check the status of your application. You may also check whether you are registered through MVP. PHOTO ID REQUIREMENTS A photo ID is required to vote in person. Acceptable forms of identification are:

The State of Georgia allows absentee voting by mail and in-person. No excuse is required to vote before election day. ABSENTEE VOTING BY MAIL Georgia law allows for absentee by mail ballots to be requested up to 180 days before an election. To request an absentee ballot, voters should complete an absentee ballot application and return the absentee ballot application to their county registration office. Absentee ballot applications can be returned by mail, fax, email (as an attachment), or in-person to the local County Board of Registrar’s Office. Hyperlinks below: (hold down CTRL then hover over link to access) Click here to view a fillable PDF of the Georgia Application for Official Absentee Ballot Click here to locate the contact information for your County Board of Registrar’s Office ABSENTEE VOTING IN-PERSON Georgia law provides three weeks of in-person early voting in regularly scheduled primaries and elections. We recommend you vote as early as possible. Please encourage your friends and relatives to do the same. The more people that vote early, the less lines on election day. In addition, if you have elderly or disabled friends or relatives, then you offer to take them to the registrar at a convenient time. That way they avoid any election day lines or issues. Respectfully submitted, VREM Committee

With the appearance of COVID-19 and the pandemic, the Brothers
switched to meeting with the mentees by utilizing Zoom Meetings. On

mentees. Brothers insured that the mentees and their families were doing
well, keeping up with their schoolwork, and completing their assignments.

On Thursday, May 28, 2020 six of the Brothers held another zoom conference with our
mentees. During our last meeting, we gave the mentees the
assignment to watch the documentary, Tell Them We are
Rising, and be able to discuss the documentary with us.
They enjoyed the documentary, which was about the
History and Founding of HBCUs. They had to answer 5
questions based on the documentary. We then discussed the roles that Booker T. Washington
and W.E.B. DuBois had with HBCUs. Afterwards, we discussed with the mentees the
importance of not using the N-word and other derogatory words. There is never an appropriate
time to use these words. The mentees made a promise to stop using the N-word, especially with
their friends. As an incentive for watching the documentary, the brothers promised them a prize.
Each mentee will receive a $15 chick-fil-a gift card. Brothers Jimmie Powell, Augustus Vereen,
Quinn Seay, Kashiwa Brawner, Kenneth Towns, and Shean Brown. The Brothers spent
approximately 18 man-hours with the mentees.
On Thursday, July 9, 2020 the eight Brothers held another zoom conference with our
mentees. The mentees must read the book, All American
Boys and discussed Chapters 1 & 2. Mrs. Pharalynn Brown
facilitated the meeting. The book is about Rashad, a young
African American teenager, who was falsely accused of
stealing a bag of chips in a convenient store. He was
severely beaten by a white policeman and had to be Bro. Quinn Seay on Zoom

hospitalized. This assault was witnessed by Quinn, his white classmate, who happens to be best
friends with the white cop’s little brother. Quinn is torn between whether he should keep quiet
about the assault he witnessed or if he should tell on his best friend’s brother. This book is truly
relevant to the racial injustice that is currently going on in our country.
Also, the mentees must make a 1½ minute video explaining “What a
father means to me”. After completing the book, each Mentee will
receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card. Brothers Jimmie Powell, Augustus
Vereen, Quinn Seay, Kashiwa Brawner, Alphonso Dunston, Kevin
Littlejohn and Shean Brown and Mrs. Pharalynn Brown (Facilitator).
Bro. Brown reported on the summer reading assignment - All American Boys. The book club
meeting held via Zoom was held on July 9th and July 16th. Mentees were asked to do a
presentation on ‘What a Father Means to Me’. A $25 Amazon gift card was awarded to the
mentees for their participation. Mrs. Brown facilitated the review. Summer learning loss or the
summer brain drain refers to the loss of skills and knowledge that can occur during the summer
months. On average, students can lose between two to three months of reading skills during the
summer. Given the current impact of the COVID 19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd
and Ahmaud Arbery, the Brothers of Zeta Beta Beta felt it would be impactful to start a summer
book club for our mentees. The book, All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely.
The book tells the story of a young African American student that becomes the victim of police
brutality because he was racial profiled. The book examines the conscious and viewpoints of his
peers and his family regarding the situation. Weekly virtual book club meetings were held to
discuss chapters of the book. The Brothers used the opportunity discuss with the mentees their
feelings and responses to not only the book itself but social injustice at large in their community.

to young students to end “summer slide,” which is the
learning loss experienced over the summer by many
students when they are not attending school. The Brothers of the Zeta Beta Beta Chapter
believe that Black lives matter. In keeping with the Cardinal Principle of Scholarship, the
Brothers served the Athens community by distributing
books to over 80 students for the Books-4-Keeps
organization. Our chapter’s commitment to the Athens
community through Books-4- Keeps is to end “summer
slide” or summer learning loss for children from low-
income families. These children are disproportionately
affected by “summer slide” often due to the access to books whether due to geography,
transportation, or library fines. With the closing of schools, which normally serves as the
distribution channel for the books, the Brothers provided the manpower necessary to

January 23, 2020 Arthur Hinton, Jr. Zeta Beta Beta Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. P.O. Box 5824 Athens, GA 30604 Dear Arthur: I am writing to thank you – deeply and sincerely – for organizing a group of brothers from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Athens to come volunteer with Books for Keeps on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service for the third year in a row. Your group of volunteers were a joy to work with, and it is especially meaningful for our organization to see familiar faces at Day of Service. Over the course of three hours in the Books for Keeps warehouse, Omega Psi Phi helped box nearly 5,000 program books – all of them destined for the hands and homes of Athens children this spring. They are among 85,000 books we will give away in 2019 here in the Athens area, to children in high-need elementary schools. We are excited that your chapter of Omega Psi Phi is interested in coming to the schools again this year to help us give the books away, and we look forward to working further with your members to spread the joy of reading and equal access of books. Thank you for your dedication to youth, education, and making our Athens community a better place. We are excited to be working with you in these efforts! Sincerely,

Thanksgiving Food Baskets
On Saturday, November 23rd, 2019, the brothers assisted Timothy Baptist Church with
its annual Thanksgiving outreach service. This is the third, consecutive year that ZBB has
assisted in this effort. The participation of the Brothers helps to ensure the success of the event.
ZBB participated in the Thanksgiving
Feast at Timothy Baptist on November 23,
2019. The Chapter provided gifts for an annual
raffle. Last year we were able to bless 18
members of the Athens community and their
families with gift cards, thermoses, outerwear,
and toiletry gift bags. Typical donations are
geared to support persons that may not have stable housing. Gift cards to Subway, Burger King,
etc. were provided to assist families that may not have access to a kitchen. Items such as
insulated beverage containers and food storage containers were greatly appreciated. Publix and

Fair Street Elementary School Community Pandemic Lunches
Fair Street School has been a staple in the community for more than 80 years. It was built
in 1936. It was first opened as a school for black children in Hall and Lumpkin counties. The Fair
Street School had been a corner of the Black
community in Gainesville. Fair Street School was
integrated in 1969. It became the Fair Street
International Baccalaureate World School in
2007 and continues to be a beacon of education
for black and brown students in Hall county.
On May 23, 2020, the Brothers of
Zeta Beta Beta in conjunction with the Fair Street faculty donated, prepared, and served over 130
meals to the surrounding community to assist families in need during the pandemic. Included with
the meal was flyer containing information on the transmission of COVID 19 and the symptoms of
the disease. Also distributed with the meals were protective masks to slow the increasing spread of
the virus in Hall County. Brother Quinn Seay coordinated the event, and the Brothers contributed

volunteers at the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank to assist in the
drive-up food giveaway. The Brothers of Zeta Beta Beta packed
boxes with the food donations and loaded those food boxes into
vehicles of members of the community in need. This has been a monthly activity for the Brothers
from February until July. Brothers assisted every 3rd Tuesday and
distributed an average of 30,000 pounds of food to 150 families.
Brothers Alphonso Dunston and Quincy Wilkins coordinated this
ongoing event. Brothers have contributed approximately 80-man

Zeta Beta Beta Reclamation Event
On December 22, 2019, the Brothers of the Zeta Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc. gathered to celebrate the 90th birthday of Brother Dr. Willie Farmer, Sr. Non-
financial Brothers who had been associated with Zeta Beta Beta were invited to the event.
Bro. Farmer was born on November 26, 1929 in Epps, AL, and he grew up in Meridian,
MS. Bro. Farmer served in the U. S. Army for 3 years, before enrolling at Jackson College for
Negro Teachers (later named Jackson State University) as an instrumental music major. While
attending college, Bro. Farmer was initiated into the Upsilon Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc. in 1951. After graduating college in 1954 Bro. Farmer started a career as an
educator and administrator in the Picayune, MS school system where he started the first band in
the history of the school where he worked. He worked at several secondary schools in
Mississippi, including the 33rd Avenue High School in Gulfport, MS. before working at the
collegiate level at Jackson State University and Mississippi State University. While on the
faculty of Mississippi State he recommended a young undergraduate, David Marion (future
Grand Basileus) for membership in the Fraternity. After leaving Mississippi State, Bro. Farmer
relocated to Athens, GA where he served as a high school assistant principal and principal before
retiring in 2000.
Bro. Farmer became affiliated with the Zeta Beta Beta Chapter of the Fraternity
immediately on relocating to Athens. He has served as Basileus of the chapter and has twice
been named the Chapter’s Omega Man-of-the-Year. He and his wife, Tommie, are also active in
several civic and religious organizations in the community. He holds a lifetime membership in
the NAACP and has served as president of the local chapter. The local Jackson State University
Alumni Chapter has recognized Bro. Farmer and his wife for service to the organization. The
33rd Avenue High School where he worked early in his career has honored Bro. Farmer by
naming a scholarship in his honor. He is also a Steward in the First AME Church in Athens. Bro.
Farmer celebrated 69 years as an Omega Man in April 2020.
