Tacoma starting pitcher Jordan Pries surrendered five runs in the fourth inning and lefty reliever Joe Saunders allowed four runs in the eighth inning, sinking the Rainiers. Designated hitter Franklin Gutierrez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, and infielder Ketel Marte notched two hits, including one double. SIXTH INNING BLUES: The Rainiers have scored in every inning except the sixth inning. Through 11 games, Tacoma batters have only notched six sixth-inning hits. ENJOYING THE SUN: A total of 17,903 fans packed Cheney Stadium for the Rainiers first three home games - a 76.6% increase over the 10,135 fans that attended the first three home games of 2014. If the average attendance of 5,968 is sustained all year, 411,792 fans will have visted Cheney this year, over 100,000 more than the 305,446 last year. LEAVE THE BROOMS AT HOME: Down 0-3 in the series, the Rainiers are facing a potential sweep by El Paso. The Chihuahuas have never swept Tacoma, and the Rainiers have not suffered a sweep since going 0-4 at Tucson, then a Padres affiliate, August 21-24 of 2013. After going down 0-3 and facing a potential sweep twice in 2014, the Rainiers out- scored their opponents 18-8 in the final game, including a 13-4 victory over the Chihuahuas in El Paso on June 3. HAPPY PARENTS: Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez leads all players in the Mariners minor league system with eight RBI, and the Rainiers team batting average of .279 is tops in the organitzation. Starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio’s 0.82 ERA (1ERx11.0IP) is the second lowest in the organization among qualified pitchers. HITTERS PARADISE: The last time the Rainiers faced El Paso starter Aaron Northcraft was on April 10, when they tagged him for seven runs on eight hits in just 1.2 innings of work. Tacoma went on to win that game 17-5 behind 20 hits from the Rainiers offense. 20 hits are the most recorded by a PCL team in a single game this season, while 17 runs are tied for the highest output. IRON MEN: Rainiers infielders Ketel Marte and Carlos Rivero are the only three players to have seen time in each of the club’s 11 games this year. The duo has combined to hit .314 (27x86) with 15 runs (22.7% of team total), two home runs, and 11 RBI (19.2% of team total). SEEING THE BALL: Infielder Shawn O’Malley has only struck out twice in 32 total plate appearances this year, giving him a 16.00 TPA/SO ratio, fourth best in the league. His career TPA/SO ratio is 5.79. GOODBYE BASEBALL: Rainiers pitchers have allowed 12 home runs through the first 11 games, the third most by a pitching staff in the league. 27.4% of the runs allowed by Tacoma pitchers have come via the long ball, and they have surrendered a dinger an average of once every 35 batters faced. DEJA VU: Tacoma has allowed two big innings (five or more runs) to opponents at home this year, both to El Paso. The first big inning surrendered at Cheney Stadium in 2014 was also to the Chihuahuas, when they score six runs in the second inning on the way to a 9-5 win. ROUGH START: Through the first two turns in the Rainiers starting rotation, the group collected just two quality starts. The first men on the mound posted a collective ERA of 6.20 (34ERx49.1IP) and allowed an opponent batting average of .298 (56x188). The average start lasted just 5.0 innings, while three outings lasted fewer than 4.1 innings. In 2014 the Rainiers got 120 starts from regular starters (10 or more starts), only 18 of which lasted fewer than 4.0 innings – the same group held opposing batters to a .267 (648x2425) average. REUNITED AT LAST: Rainiers manager Pat Listach and pitching coach Jaime Navarro played together as part of the 1992-93, and 1994 Milwaukee Brewers. The two shared a sucessful 1992 season - Listach earned AL Rookie of the Year honors after hitting .290 (168x579), and Navarro went 17-11 on the mound with a 3.33 ERA (91ERx246.0IP). The 1992 Brewers went 92-70 and finished second in the AL East, falling four games shy of the playoffs. Tacoma hitting coach Cory Snyder went 0-for-3 in his Major League career against Navarro.
