We recent ly reported that Tairua’s Flock Kitchen & Bar had been invited to participate in the Great NZ Toastie Takeover, a national competition designed to find the best “cheese toastie” in the country. C o m p e t i t i o n c r i t e r i a required participating eateries to create sandwiches that were toasted between two slices of bread and, like all good toasties, able to be eaten by hand. The toasties also needed to contain cheese and McClure’s Pickles, with all the other ingredients entirely up to the entrants’ imaginations. Sara Fordham and her team
of Flockers came up with “A Flockn Good Ideer”, comprising sourdough bread, venison, homemade br ie cheese, homemade chutney, baby spinach, McClure’s pickle, and housemade potato chips! O rga n i s e rs h ave n ow narrowed the competition field to a list of 12 finalists, including Tairua’s Flock! Representing the Waikato-Coromandel-Bay of Plenty-Rotorua region, Flock joins “Haye’s Common” from Hamilton as the area’s finalists! Sara said she received the news that Flock had made the finals while standing in the supermarket and was more than a little shocked. Her
toastie had been conceived over one night and the contest entered without a piece of bread being toasted! Her reaction to the news was a definite “Wow!” All finalists will receive a case of McClure’s Pickles and dine-in vouchers to give away to their customers. Final judging will take place in August with the competition’s toast-master-royale visiting all 12 finalists to sample their creations. He will then liaise with McClure’s Pickles co-founder, Joe McClure, and head judge Kerry Tyack to determine New Zealand’s best toastie of 2020. Each toastie is judged on presentation, effectiveness of preparation technique,
eatability, taste, innovation and originality. The supreme winner will be announced on Wednesday, September 3, and will walk away with a year’s worth of pickles, more dine-in vouchers, a toastie trophy – and most importantly, bragging rights to the best toasted sandwich in the country.

Over recent months the demand for Justices of the Peace services in the local area has steadily increased, prompting the move to set up a weekly service desk at the Tairua Library. Maria Cory-Wright JP, working at Tairua Pharmacy and trying to keep pace with walk-in demand, has found it overwhelming i n r e c e n t m o n t h s . After discussions, the local Justices of the Peace have decided to implement the service-desk solution. The service-desk model is becoming increasingly used around the country, especially in the larger urban centres, and also locally with The Hauraki Justice of the Peace Association operating weekly service desks in Waihi, Whitianga, Ngatea and Thames. Jen at Tairua Library has

arranged the use of a room where this service can be provided. The JP’s service desk will be available every Friday from 11am to 12noon, starting this week on the 7th of August. Mary Jury, Hikuai JP said, “Fortunately, we have a dedicated team of local JP's who will provide this service via a roster.” The local JPs hope that this new service in Tairua gets the uptake it deserves, because i ts ava i lab i l i ty, convenience and regularity will meet local needs and also fully utilise the local JP team. Due to work commitments Maria at the Pharmacy won’t be able to do JP work for drop- in c l ients. Instead, she will be available out-of-work hours by appointment for those who can’t make it to the Library on Fridays.

Tena Koutou Katoa, This is Constable Dylan Curtin
writing to the Tairua and Pauanui communities. It is with great pride I take up the opportunity to write to you all since the departure of Constable Paul Johnston, known as PJ.
PJ has been on a secondment to Hamilton taking up other opportunities there. Next month will mark the end of his 3 month secondment where he is likely to take up a full time role over there. PJ has been a wonderful asset for the last 7 years, in Tairua and Pauanui, being extremely passionate and hard working. I wish him all the best on his new venture.
I am hoping that his position gets fil led promptly so we can continue to give the Tairua and Pauanui communities the attention and support they need. We are currently receiving good support from neighbouring stations such as Whangamata, Thames and Whitianga so don’t be afraid to say "Hi" or welcome these Police officers to town if you see them around and show them what a great place this is to be.
With the recent downpours of rain in the past couple of weeks we experienced a lot of flooding. Despite all the warnings and messages to avoid travel, it was disappointing to see many still trying to get through the floods, resulting in multiple rescue operations which put our emergency s er v ice s u nd er h uge pre s s u re .
There have been some rumours about the Armed Offenders Squad and dog handlers spotted in town. I can report that there was an operation to arrest an individual in the Whitianga area after a family-harm event where
Now that the school holidays are over, and the new term has begun, Tod-dlertime at Tairua Library has resumed. Librarian Jen welcomes anyone with young ones. Grandparents are warmly welcome too! Go along on Wednesday morn-ings from 10.30 to 11am. This is a fun way for the chil-dren to enjoy stories, music and activities, and a great way for parents/caregivers to network.Tairua Garden Club will reconvene on Monday 17 August at 1.30pm. This first meeting after the Covid restrictions is their AGM, followed by a speaker and catered afternoon tea. Reg-ular meetings are usually held on the second Monday of the month in the Tairua Hall and include speakers and/or activities, as well as day trips away to visit gar-dens on some occasions. The Club is very social with 80 current members. New members are always wel-come - you do not need to be an experienced gardener to join. Tairua Garden Club, in conjunction with St Francis Church, maintain the two gardens outside the hall as an ongoing project. The Grady White Tairua Boat Show is on this week-end, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August, 10am to 5pm at Tairua Marina. Entry is free. All the latest model boats, marine electronics and gear will be on site for your pe-rusal, plus big displays of all the latest fishing tackle and dive -spearfishing gear. This will be the biggest display of boats seen in Tairua with over 80 new model boats from New Zealand's best manufacturers. There will be various guest speakers throughout the day. Drinks and food will be available at the Tairua Pauanui Fishing Club.
he was the suspect of a serious assault. Firearms and ammunition were also located during the operation. The man is now in custody and court p r o c e e d i n g s a r e i n p r o g r e s s .
The red highway patrol car that has been parked outside the front of the station belongs to our local highway officer Ritchie. He spends the majority of his time on the main state highways focussing on road safety.
Currently there is a community project where we are looking at getting CCTV cameras for the Tairua township. I support this initiative which is being led by Laurie Franks. It will take more than a few of us to make this work so I encourage you to step forward and help make this happen. We live in paradise and I would rate our community as one of the safest in NZ, however CCTV can provide us with quality evidence when following up on incidents and is a good deterrent to prevent crime.
Lastly, reporting. It can be frustrating when you need Police and no one is at the station, but we aim to be out on the street as much as possible keeping the community safe. The station phone has also been centralised so you can no longer call us directly. If you need to report anything the best way to get in touch for non-urgent matters is 105 or online at https://www.police.govt.nz/105support. Once you’ve entered a report we will follow up with you ASAP. You may not think what you have is worth reporting but one small thing may be the piece of the puzzle we need to solve something bigger, so please report everything that you think Police need to know.Nga Mihi, Dylan Curtin

It is very important to remember to use your Information Centres for everything from general information to booking your pool pass at The Lost Spring, your Eyeful Tower Tour at Driving Creek Railway, or your luge rides in Rotorua, just to name a few things. We are so good at providing for you. There is no extra cost to you, however we make a small commission which helps to keep our doors open and continues to provide your community with a much needed asset. Remember us also for our wonderful selection of gifts for family, friends, or to send overseas. The Pauanui Information Centre is looking for more volunteers. Those with good communication skil ls, and passionate about Pauanui/Tairua and our greater Coromandel area, would suit the role. A background in sales is also a great advantage. If you are interested or want to find out more, call me for a chat on 864 7101 or 027 281 8342. The Centre is again fundraising with the Entertainment Guide. Have you heard about the Tairua Craft Group? The groups meest on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month in St Francis House on Main Road, from 10am to 2pm. They describe themselves as “a small group of ladies who like to meet for a chat and do whatever handwork we are working on at the moment”. Group spokesperson, Renée Newell explained the group is very casual, with many levels of ability evident. She emphasised that the Group’s craft sessions are a great place to learn and share, all in the company of friendly like-minds. T h e g ro u p h a s b e e n collaborating on a project to provide woollens for new-borns. They have produced
Allcrafterswelcomehand-knitted hats, tops, booties and singlets which are for the midwives to take on their rounds and give to new babies and toddlers in need. The collected items are now destined for the Thames Birthing Unit. Most of the knitting for this project was done during lockdown! Do you have craft skills that you would like to enhance or share with others? Why not go along and check out the Tairua Craft Group. The group has a door charge of $3 which covers their tea and coffee, and they take their own lunches to their meetings. New members are always welcome. If you would like more information you can contact Jean on 021 278 6820 or Renée on 07 864 8644.
