TAKING A WALK AROUND THE TOWN OF KRŠKO

Th e town of Krško is located where the river Sava valley widens up into the vast Krško fi eld and was set up on both banks of the river. It is the central town of the Posavska region and also its central municipality. Th e Krško area is easily accessible by motorway (Ljubljana – Zagreb) and regional roads from Celje, Maribor, Novo mesto, as well as with international and local trains. Krško is located 98 km from Ljubljana and 51 km from Zagreb.

Population of the Krško municipality: approximately 26,000Population of the town Krško: 7,059Area: 286.5 km2

Average altitude: 163 m

Krško has a rich history, as it has witnessed the destinies and life stories of many important local personalities. Even today, the renovated cultural and historical buildings in the old part of town tell stories about the lives and achievements of the past.

KRŠKO TOWN MUSEUM

Upon entering Krško visitors are greeted by Valvasor's complex of the three houses of Valvasor, Jarnovič and Kaplan, which are the best historical part of the town from an architectural point of view. Th e Late Renaissance Valvasor house from 1609 was determined in 1894 to have been the house where Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641 –1693) had spent the last days of his life. Today we know that the actual house is just meters away and is also an important part of the town's history, as it is where writer, lawyer and politician Janez Mencinger (1838 –1912) used to live. In 1966, a statue of Valvasor made by the academic sculptor and medallist Vladimir Štoviček was erected in front of the Valvasor house. In Valvasor complex has its place the Krško town museum, where you

can visit the permanent exhibition of sculptor and medallist Vladimir Štoviček, who contributed some of his work to the Krško municipality for the Valvasor house specifically. The museum also displays handicraft products of the border area as part of the project Honey and gingerbread trail between Krško and Zagreb. In 2011, an exhibition on Josipina Hočevar (1824 –1911) will be introduced (she was a great benefactor of the city in the 19th century) and in 2013, an exhibition on the life and works of Adam Bohorič (c. 1520 –1598) and Jurij Dalmatin (c. 1546 –1589) will follow.

HOČEVAR’S SQUARE

Th e town of Krško has developed into an important university center in the Posavska region, as Hočevar’s square is home to the Faculty of Logistics and Faculty of Energetics, located in a building from1877 which functioned as a civil public school. It was built by the architect Martin Hočevar and his statue can be seen in the middle of the square.During Valvasor’s lifetime, the square was already known for its St. John the Evangelist church, which got its present features in 1894 when it became the town’s parish church. In 1899, it was further decorated with three medallions, two lunett es and a statue of Maria, all works of the sculptor Ivan Zajc who created the Prešeren monument in Ljubljana a few years later. His university education was enabled by Josipina Hočevar.

MENCINGER HOUSE

Janez Mencinger (1838-1912), writer, lawyer and politician, came to Krško in 1882. Five years later he chose two marvelous houses in old part of town to be his home. Mencinger is known as a writer of novels, like Abaddon, My walking on Triglav and unfi nished Monks memories. He was among the founders of the Slovenian Writers' Association in 1872, two years latt er he was also a Mayor of Krško (1894-1896). Two above mentioned houses were renewed during 2010-2012 and aft er revealed their real beauty. Today, the house address is Cesta krških žrtev 2, the two houses are united, but until around 1930 they had address Krško 37 and 38. Both houses have indoor atrium and a number of interesting elements that bear witness to centuries of life in them. Southern house is particularly famous because today we know that this is the traditional Krško house in which has lived and died a

famous polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641-1693). About the Northern house, where Renaissance painting were discovered during the renovation, we know less but an insight into the restoration allowed depth insight into the architectur which has grown for centuries and left a priceless material to follow. Exceptional portraits from the mid-16th century testify of city and its inhabitants importance. In addition to the public availability of portraits, Mencinger's room is part of a renewed and publicly accessible houses with original furniture.

KRŠKO OLD TOWN CENTER

Th e town of Krško is located between the river Sava and valley hills. Its important strategic position gave meaning to the town throughout the centuries; on March 5, 1477 the square of the time was declared a town. Only a few rocks remain from the former castle, and the town center is defi ned by numerous interesting buildings, famous for their architecture and importance to the town. In the southern part of the center, a short stroll from Dalmatin street, awaits the beautiful Secession style house which was once known as the Engelsberger shop and the inhabitants of Krško are still guarded by Merkur, the patron of trade. In front of the municipality building which has served its purpose since the 19th century lies the Cesta krških žrtev street with the most beautifully decorated Secession facade of the Župnek house (also known as the Scagneti house aft er the architect). Carefully designed ornaments, a rounded balcony and a picturesque front door are parts of the most beautiful Secession house built around the 1900s.
