HEALTH is WEALTH – Health Fair Reported by Vicky Chang

Queens, NY Aug 27 – Under the leadership of new member Ruben Rafaelov (project chair) and supervisory CDVP Jaime Torrejon, the 2006 Health Fair (“Health and Wellness”) served the community of Elmhurst, Queens. In general, projects under the CD area are large in scale, and this one was no exception. The Health Fair served the community by providing free medical services and con-sultation which included EKG, blood pressure, urinalysis, and other basic services such as height and weight measurements. Jaime Torrejon, Community Development Vice President, decided in the beginning of his term to revive the health fairs that the Philippine New York Jay-cees provided to communities in the past. The Health Fair was a success due to the collaborative efforts with United Homecare (a registered nursing agency); Kalusugan Coali-tion (a medical studies organization from New York University); and a few practitioners in the dental, chiropractic, and medical fields. The sponsoring church of St. Batholomew and its prayer group also con-tributed significantly in the success of this project. Through the health fair, we were able to provide to the Queens community, spe-cially the underprivileged families with a Comprehensive Health Fair: to acquire free health screenings, seminars, consultations, while also learning ways to improve their health & promote good health habits. We had a great attendance of over 160 who participated in the various screenings and seminars even though it was raining the day of the health fair.

Metro Conference Director visits NYC! Reported by: Metro Dir Jennifer McNeil and Pres Vivian Velasco

On September 1st - 3rd NYS Metro Conference Director, Jennifer Sinatra Mac Neil and Dylan Mac Neil toured the NYC Metro area with The Philippine-NY Jaycees. Our group first traveled to see the New York Yankees game organized by Gov. Willi Gamboa, where the atmosphere, even with the light sprinkles, was exciting. It was like Christmas in September; everyone bustling to get to the game. The energy was amazing. Later that night we met at the Todai Restaurant. This is a very well known Japanese buffet restaurant. The Phil-NY Jaycees, with their twinned Jaycee chapter from Manilena Philippines, were all present. We had 23 people attending dinner.

the

Several of the past presidents of the Phil-NY chapter were present which include Sen. Sergs Estrada, Gov. Willi Gamboa, Gov. Kriz-teen Dulay, Sen. Ner Martinez, Amb. Vivian proceeded with her agenda which included messages from the NYS Metro Conference Director, and from the past presidents of Manilena Jaycees spearheaded by dinner co-sponsor, Millie Sta.Maria-Thomeczek, 1984 president and current Philippine Consulate Deputy Consul General. We all were given this wonderful opportunity to expand our horizons and exchanged ideas with our distinguished guests. To further en-hance our experience, all guests received a copy of their newsletter the “Tambuli” and the National Jaycees Magazines, where the New York State Jaycees were featured. The Philippine chapter concluded their hosted evening by giving the “Wall St. Bull” figurines which sig-nify NYC’s vitality, and chapter pins to our visiting Metro Director and Manilena Jaycees; the guests were then taken to a nearby karaoke facility where we all sang the night away! Before departing Sunday,

Sept GMM: Financial Management Seminar with Jaime Torrejon

The Sept GMM was held at Dip, a bar/restaurant on Second Avenue. GMM speakers not only come from outside the organization but also from the membership. In Sept, CDVP Jaime Torrejon shared some key information regarding financial management. Outside of work, Jaime is a Marketing Representative for the New York Camps Agency within the John Hancock Financial Network. He indicated that there are six basic facets of financial management 1. College Funding - A 529 savings plan is a tax-deferred,

qualified tuition program. It is designed specifically to create savings for higher education. It can used at any eligible college, university or graduate school in the U.S. Tax-deferred growth on earnings and federal income tax-free withdrawals set 529 savings plans apart from other college savings investments (**)

2. Retirement - A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored qualified retirement plan, which offers employees a variety of investment options. Employees can contribute to the plan through payroll deduction (or deferral). These contributions are tax-sheltered until withdrawn at retirement. (**)

3. Disability income 4. Asset allocation – Depending on the level of risk that you are

able to take on, you can invest in financial products that range from high risk/high reward to low risk/low reward.

5. Long term care insurance - A long term care (LTC) insurance policy helps cover the cost of long term care, picking up where

health and disability insurance leave off. LTC refers to help with daily activities -- such as eating, bathing or dressing -- over an extended period of time. It can also include help for those suffering from a severe cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's disease. LTC is generally provided in the patient's home, an assisted living facility , or a nursing home. (**)

6. Life Insurance - Term Insurance: It's life insurance that you pay for over a specified length of time, or term - generally one to 20 years. The amount of the death benefit or face value can be selected to meet your needs. Premiums, or payments - which can be the same amount or increase over time - must be made monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or an-nually. If you die during the term of coverage, the face amount of your policy will be paid to your beneficiaries. (**) Universal Life Insurance: It's life insurance that you pay for over a specified length of time, or term - generally one to 20 years. The amount of the death benefit or face value can be selected to meet your needs. Premiums, or payments - which can be the same amount or increase over time - must be made monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. If you die during the term of coverage, the face amount of your policy will be paid to your beneficiaries. (**) Variable life insurance - Variable life is permanent insurance, which allows you to invest a portion of your premium in various subac-counts. The policy owner can choose among several subaccounts, each of which has its own investment strategy, and invests the money in stocks, bonds, money market, or other securities in order to build your policy's cash value. However, because the performance of these investments is not guaranteed, there is an element of risk. (**) There are many more financial products that we can invest in either based on need, life circumstances and risk levels. The best way to determine the best plan would be to work with a registered financial planner. For more information, contact Jaime at [email protected] (**) Detailed information was obtained from company website http://www.johnhancock.com

Baila Tango

International Affairs VP Florina Monroy wanted to share her passion for the Tango so she arranged for the Phil NY Jaycees to have a private group lesson for four consecutive Friday evenings. She secured an instructor – Mr. Carlos deChey who has patiently spend the last two weeks teaching us the basics of tango. We have two more classes to go – we hope that after that, some of the Tango students will be enticed to take further classes to perfect this dance.

Save the DATE! HALLOWEEN JAM – (OCT 28, Saturday) –Live band, line dancing, open mic, food and drinks, costume contest! what’s the theme–you decide! – Lots of opportunity to let your creative juices fly! – Contact: MDVP Elaine Dayoan - (917) 939-5723; Project Co-Chairs – APRILLE PIAMONTE; BAMBIE GISON LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir/Madam: I am a prospective member who happened to sit in on one of your meetings and I was just amazed at the number of acronyms being bandied about during your meeting. At first I thought GMM was a secret Jaycee greeting - Good Morning Member but apparently it meant General Membership Meeting (isn't that nice to know!). Then I was told that as part of the Jaycees I would learn about CPG - wow! Cool Pretty Girls - and then I found it that it meant Chairman's Plan-ning Guide - which is 10-step tool used to plan and evaluate a pro-ject. And then some more acronyms - as a Jaycee member you are a LOM (Local Organization Member and NOM (National Organization Member) thankfully they don't mean Looks Old Maidish or Never on Mondays!. The Jaycees looks like an interesting organization and they refer to officers with acronyms as well - MSVP I thought meant My Sweet Virtual.Pet - but nooooo... your Membership Services VP Gary is certainly in a class above the rest! I also thought FOJ was Full Of Jokes - but I learned it means Friend Of Jaycees. Hmmmmm. I think that I will attend more events before I decide to join. But seems like a great group to be part of. Salamat – Pedro
