A collision occurred at the Klipriver and True North intersection on Wednesday 20 August around 6:35 am, involving a D&D Tactical vehicle. A seven-year-old boy lost his life and the D&D Tactical driver has been charged with culpable homicide.The D&D vehicle, which was travelling on Klipriver towards Aspen, T-boned the other car, which was coming from the opposite direction, and turning into True North. The

boy was strapped into the back seat and was being driven by his father. The D&D Tactical vehicle had two occupants - the driver, who is a D&D supervisor, and a controller in the back seat. When tame TIMES asked if the security vehicle was involved in a high-speed chase, Andrew Ledwick, MD of D&D Tactical replied, “No high speed chase was occurring. They were on their way to drop controls off at a site.”He added, “D&D Tactical are saddened by the accident; we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends that have been

affected by the accident. We assure the residents that we as a company do not tolerate any reckless driving in any way. We are currently doing our own investigation and we will cooperate with the Metro Police and other authorities involved, should they need any information. If you witnessed the accident, please call 011 432 6050.”JMPD spokeswoman Superintendent Edna Mamonyane told tame TIMES, “The seven-year-old boy was still strapped in his seatbelt when authorities got to the scene. The young boy died due to the boot hitting his head.

The father most probably underestimated the speed and distance of the D&D Tactical vehicle and should have waited; however the investigation will need to confirm this.”Ledwick explained that his driver is currently receiving trauma counselling. “Once again we send condolences to the family and if there is anything we can assist with, we are willing to do so,” Ledwick said.tame TIMES would like to send their deepest sympathies to the boy’s family and pray that God will comfort them during this very difficult time.

I am quite disheartened, but not at all surprised, by the Facebook comments that I have seen concerning the accident involving a D&D Tactical vehicle on Kliprivier Road where a young boy sadly lost his life. May the little boy rest in peace. This is a very sensitive situation as an innocent child has been lost and a family is grieving for their son due to an accident.What confuses me, however, is that people can applaud D&D Tactical for chasing criminals and make the most racist and disgusting comments when criminals are apprehended, but then just as quickly jump

on the band wagon accusing and bad-mouthing D&D saying they are always speeding around and that is the reason for the young boy losing his life.None of us know who was in the wrong and that is for the authorities to decide. Yes, there were eyewitnesses - however, they all have conflicting stories.I lost my cousin, Gary Schoeman and a friend Wade Ferreira, at this exact intersection several years ago in a very similar scenario and I am sure many more lives have been lost. The point of the matter is that the Kliprivier intersections are dangerous - the road is too wide and too big to try to take chances.If D&D were in the wrong, then justice must take its course and the driver must take responsibility for his actions. Believe me, I am sure, just to know a life was lost - and a young one at that - is enough to make this man re-think his actions, whether he was in the wrong or not; and imagine what the father feels - he might be blaming his actions for his son’s death. It is a very unfortunate situation.May the authorities come to a fair and just judgement and may all parties involved walk away with peace and acceptance in their hearts.

May God be the strength to the family that lost their son as well as the driver of the D&D Tactical vehicle.

The drive to root out corruption within City Power is starting to bear fruit following the suspension of five employees for the theft of drums of cable worth R4, 5 million at the Randburg depot in Johannesburg on Monday 18 August.The arrest of these employees, who comprise of four electricians and two Team Leaders, follows a thorough audit of inventory of cable equipment. The utility embarked on this exercise after it detected some discrepancies in its inventory. Each of the cable drums stolen carries cable that is 300 meters long and the suspects will be charged with fraud and theft.City Power Managing Director, Sicelo Xulu, said investigations are underway to determine whether the employees have links with organised crime syndicates. He said that, as the investigations unfold, more arrests are expected.“These arrests are part of our anti-corruption drive that seeks to rid the utility of criminal elements. This year we have seen a significant spike in cable theft and corrupt practices, and in some of these incidents our contractors and employees were implicated. We are working with external parties to tighten up our internal controls as

well, in order to enhance operational efficiencies. This entails tightening up our internal processes to close the loopholes and address existing weaknesses in the system,” Xulu explained.The theft of cables and vandalism of electricity equipment plunged many neighbourhoods into darkness earlier this year and cost the utility and businesses millions of rands. Xulu said the utility is encouraged by the success it has achieved thus far, but said that more work still needs to be done to make cable theft a thing of the past.Since City Power embarked on this anti-corruption and anti-cable theft drive, approximately 227 suspects have been arrested, and the conviction rate stands at an impressive 86%.“City Power cannot win this battle alone without the support of its employees, contractors and the communities it serves. We urge and encourage our stakeholders to continue to work with us in order to deal a decisive blow to this scourge of cable theft and corruption. The vandalism of electricity infrastructure and theft of electricity is not a crime against City Power alone, but it is an offence against all the law-abiding citizens and ratepayers in Johannesburg,” Xulu concluded.

It has turned into a major pothole and is constantly leaking water. “I want to know who is paying for this water,” a resident exclaimed to tame TIMES.Even though it has been cordoned off with tape and beacons, due to the bend and slant of the road, it is extremely dangerous.Clr Smit said the issue had been reported to Joburg Water on 19 August; however, the leak has still not been fixed. tame TIMES has requested feedback from Joburg Water.

Power is definitely released through concentrated efforts by various groups with the focus on creating employment and this power can now be seen at The Papillon Foundation situated in Rosettenville.The vision of The Papillon Foundation was to create a project for training unemployed people in technology that would enable them to be hired afterwards. “We wanted to eliminate graduates having to search for employment after they had completed the accredited, social outreach computer training courses that are offered at the Papillon Centre,” said Stephen Smith, The Papillon Foundation CEO.Several big companies, most notably Mutual and Federal, stepped up to partner with the centre and the result is that Mutual and Federal will research and investigate the possibilities of working with Papillon to train and employ learners for employment in their own call centres. Mr Vassen Moodley agreed that this might be a possibility at Santam. Smith said, “We seem to have many isolated entities that offer skills training today and this is very commendable, but the problem is that

we end up with many well-trained persons sitting with good qualifications and nowhere to go. This results in severe despondency that leads to anger and dissatisfaction and all other kinds of ills.”He added that to overcome this, training entities could possibly consider seeking partnerships in the corporate arena to train job eekers in dedicated skills tailored to each company’s systems requirements. “The focus should not only be on skills training, but also on employment partnerships. A solution could be to analyse the country’s skill shortages and to seek partnerships for the training and placing of learners at identified companies that list the vacancies. These companies should be amenable to share their specific requirements with the training entities and the efforts will result in a dedicated training and employment process,” Smith said.A pilot training session for 16 learners is planned to start soon at Papillon. Prospective students should note that computer literacy and a pleasant telephone manner coupled with fluency in English will be prerequisites.

Increasing education for girls is an important policy priority in many developing countries like South Africa, where high school enrolment often remains lower for girls than for boys. Many girls drop out due to teenage pregnancies. Researchers and policy makers have now found girls in poorer communities are also missing a significant number of school days due to menstruation and not being able to access modern sanitary products. Some have estimated that girls could be missing as much as 10 to 20 percent of their school days due to menstruation. A few organisations have raised their hands to say they want to assist and we at Accessible Quality Health Services (AQH) have decided to join in by selecting a few schools in our area and donating sanitary pads to them. Movie-goers watched the last hour of an un-named man in a red shirt who – after being hit by more than one bullet – still managed to sit up and look around for the help that never came for him, because ambulances were barred from the scene for a full sixty minutes after the shooting; and they saw how the man who wore his strikingly green blanket right to the end, Mgcineni “Mambush” Noki, negotiated in good faith for the workers but ended up with 14 bullets in his body, including 2 fatal gunshots to his head. Community expresses sadness after Eco Estate tragedyThe construction accident that occurred at the Meyersdal Eco Estate on 18 August was one of the worst tragedies to happen in recent times in Alberton. Seven workers lost their lives and numerous workers were left injured. It is alleged that the collapsed structure in the Meyersdal Eco Estate did not have the proper official approval. According to Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, the accident took place while illegal building operations were being undertaken at the back of the property. According to reports, two pillars were removed which caused a concrete slab to collapse on top of the workers. However the facts of the matter are still being investigated by SAPS and the Department of Labour. Construction company Romicon has released a statement in which they expressed their devastation at the tragic accident. “We express our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, and to our staff who are mourning the loss of their colleagues,” Romicon said. “We are contributing to the funeral costs of the deceased, and previous clients of ours in Meyersdal Estate have set up a Trust Fund to assist the families of the deceased and the injured in the months to come,” they continued.

A memorial service for the deceased families will be arranged in the next couple of weeks by the Ekurhuleni Municipality. Sean Romburgh, one of the owners of Romicon, said that they will not be able to provide any further comment on the tragedy, as investigations are underway. Meyersdal Eco Estate, along with Jurgens Bekker Attorneys, will set up a trust for the families of the deceased. “We continue to give our full co-operation to the various emergency services involved in the rescue operation. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families,” they said.President Jacob Zuma has extended his condolences to the families of the workers involved in the tragic accident. He further appealed to builders and project managers across the country to apply the necessary protection measures, as well as to comply with building and safety regulations, to prevent such incidents in the future.One of the injured workers told the media that he heard a loud noise, felt concrete falling on him and saw dust everywhere. Through the hard work and dedication of Booysens SAPS member Cst Mayisela from Vehicle Identification Section (VIS), two hijacking cases were solved and three hijackers have been put behind bars for a total of 47 years. After receiving the dockets, the Constable followed up all available leads and was able to trace the suspects and place the dockets on the court roll for trial.In the first case, two suspects were arrested for a carjacking that took place on 31 August 2013. One was found guilty for robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and the other was found guilty of kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances and was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment. Both suspects were found unfit to possess a firearm.In the second case, a suspect was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for a hijacking that took place on 26 March 2013.

In what seems to be a new trend, cases of motor vehicle theft are being opened by complainants who have handed their vehicles over to wrongdoers as payment for illegal activities.SAPS Members have been instructed to interview all complainants before opening vehicle theft cases to ensure that they are genuine. Those who open false vehicle theft cases are guilty of committing a crime and will be arrested for perjury. One such arrest has already been made at Booysens Police Station.

Booysens SAPS has urged the community to be very cautious about buying and selling goods on the Internet. Any meetings should be set up in public places and bank deposits should be made - handing over cash is most definitely not advised.

In a case of the long arm of the law eventually bringing the suspect to book, the work of W/O Klaasen from Mondeor SAPS Detective Branch recently put a 27-year-old man behind bars for a house-robbery committed on 5 December 2006.The suspect was found guilty on 20 August of robbing a victim in Brabazon Street, Mondeor and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

W/O Mostert of Mondeor SAPS Detective Branch is to be commended for the conviction of a 41-year-old man who robbed the Look ‘n Listen shop in Southgate Mall on 28 April 2013.Arrested by Southgate’s security last year when he tried to escape with an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect was convicted on 20 August this year to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Well done to Sgt Magoro from Mondeor SAPS Detective Branch for his hard work in putting a dangerous thief behind bars for eight years.The case was opened on 29 July 2013 after the suspect robbed a victim at Rietvlei Zoo of his cellphone and mountain-bike at knife-point. The suspect was then tracked down through Sgt Magoro’s diligent detective work and leads obtained from the stolen cellphone.The 27-year-old suspect was convicted to eight years imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

A school debate was held on 20 August at Reuven Old Age Home between Fakkal High, Forest High, Horizon High, Jordao College, Kenilworth High, President High and Sir John Adamson High as part of Booysens SAPS youth Desk’s anti-drug awareness campaign.Kenilworth High won the debate; nevertheless all schools were able to voice their opinions on the major drug problems that are occurring in schools. The drug debate was supported by Booysens SAPS, Joburg City Department of Social Welfare, Department of Social Development, Alcohol and Drug Concerns (ADC), SANCA, Local Drug & Alcohol Commission, Tower Church, Booysen CPF and Clr Rashieda Landis.The three-round debate saw topics such

as “Is drugs a problem in school?”, “Should you be punished when caught?” and the

final topic, “Should SAPS be allowed to do drug raids at

school?” debated and judged by Charlene

Dearling (ADC), Philani Mbazini (SANCA), Pastor Kenneth C a r e w ( T o w e r Church) and Wayne Fearick (LDAC). The speakers were judged

on presentation, information and clarity.

“The learners have been very competitive. We are very

impressed with their preparation, as in the debate they presented facts

A female was arrested for possession of drugs (Kat) by Moffatview SAPS officers W/O Nkabinde and R/Cst Ngogela on 20 August in Augusta Road, Regents Park.The members noticed a woman coming from a shop suspected to be selling drugs. The members approached her as she was going to go her car and asked what she was doing in the shop, as she was not carrying anything.W/O Nkabinde asked her to go to Moffatview

SAPS so that she could be searched by a female officer. On her arrival there, the suspect stepped out of her car and then dropped something underneath it. W/O Nkabinde went to check what she had dropped and saw it was drugs (kat) wrapped in a small plastic bag. The woman was arrested for possession of drugs. The members asked her if she would go and point out her supplier, but she refused.

Glenvista Shopping Centre is home to 43 retail stores and major banking ATMs. Woolworths Food, Checkers, Clicks and the South African Post Office are the anchors of the centre. The Centre underwent major renovations and upgrades between 2007 and 2009, in which a bore-hole water system was put in, repairs and improvements to the parking area were done and additional parking was constructed. The coffee shop was revamped and increased in size, contributing to higher traffic volumes. It has since expanded once again, to offer an outside section. The external office block was excavated and

developed to offer further value and variety to shoppers. Also, bathrooms were re-fitted and upgraded, generators were installed and the security systems were upgraded, with additional cameras installed.More postal boxes have become available, with the South African Postal Office increasing the numbers.Glenvista Shopping Centre works in conjunction with the policing forces within the area, as ensuring the safety of shoppers is a priority. Onsite and offsite monitoring by cameras is being conducted by a security company to ensure the Centre does their utmost to combat criminal elements.

Suiderood resident, Quintin d’Hotman de Villiers, has made it through to Provincials in September and has been awarded his Senior Gauteng colours for Artistic Boys Gymnastics. He competed in a friendly artistic gymnastics competition for boys’ level 4 where he obtained a first place on vault, rings, mini pommel, parallel bar and high bar and second place on floor securing

him first place in his age group.He then competed on 15 August at the Regionals in Centurion, obtaining a first

place on rings, high bar, parallel bar, floor, mini pommel and fourth place on vault securing him first place in his age group. He has made it through to Provincials in September and has been awarded his Senior Gauteng colours for Artistic Boys Gymnastics.

Saturday 13 September will mark yet another milestone for Roller Derby in SA with the conclusion of the 2014 home season taking place at the UNIAO Stadium in Turffontein from 18:00.2014 saw the four home teams from C-Max RDL fight it out on the flat track for a spot in the finals to crown the champions of the league in the first ever home season held in SA. Most teams also have skaters who have qualified for TEAM ZA to represent South Africa at the 2014 Blood & Thunder Roller Derby World Cup in Dallas, Texas this December. The 2014 home season finals promises to bring you the best in roller

derby competition that SA has to offer from the premier league in the country. Mondeor residents,Aimee Plank aka The Iron Tyrant (21) is a blocker and jammer and Jessica Van Kerk aka Empress Pain Guin (21) is a blocker and will represent The Thundering Hellcats.

On 31 August, the Walkerville Dirt Oval Racing club will host the 2014 boet Strydom best Pairs championship.With the six-times reigning champion Bobby Devine out to win his 7th consecutive title, some heavy guns have been brought in to stop him from achieving this goal. UK speedway star Byron Bekker has been included in the line-up, along with multiple SA champion Neil Petit, regional champion

Gio Nunes, fast Lyle Kotze, Dj Devine and up and coming youngster Brad Devine.The sidecar pack will be racing for the Dot Engineering Golden Boot, donated by ex-speedway star Arthur Bruins.Pee wee, flat track and quad racing are also billed for the day. Racing starts at 12:00 at the Walkerville Showgrounds in Old Vereeniging Road. Entrance is R20pp with food stalls and bar facilities available.
