Each day is ours to live and share, a word, a hand, a smile; and when we know that others care, itmakes life worthwhile.

Fr. Mark started the recollection with a little backgrounder about Lent. Lent

is a season of grace , said Fr. Mark. It is not just about fasting on food but more

on fasting from sin. He exhorted us to find the biggest area of sinful weakness inour life and turn away from it. He asked us to throw ourselves at the mercy ofGod for it is only with His grace that we can conquer sin. Instead of saying, Im

only human. We should say, Now I begin.

In preparation for confession Fr. Mark led us to a discussion on the SevenCapital Vices. They are:

Pride: Thinking that I am greater than I am.

    Opposite virtue = Humility

Covetousness: Too much desire for possessions.

    Opposite virtue = Generosity

Anger: Wanting punishment for someone who does notdeserve it, or wanting more than they deserve.

    Opposite virtue = Meekness

Envy: Sadness at anothers good or joy at anothers sorrow.

Opposite virtue = Joy of love towards my neighbor

Gluttony: Too much desire for food, eating more than whatis reasonable.

    Opposite virtue = Abstinence

Lust: Indulging in unlawful sexual pleasures.

    Opposite virtue = Chastity

Sloth: Sorrow at things that are spiritually good; spirituallaziness.

Opposite virtue = Joy of love towards God

The second part of the recollection was a talk on Listening at Prayer.

    * God speaks to us in all events of our lives and not just during timesof formal prayer. In order to listen to God, we have to want to hearHim.

*God is the broadcaster; our hearts are the receiving sets. In order tolisten to Him we have to:

    1. Get rid of the background noise (coming to quiet)

    2. Tune in (positively disposing ourselves to listen): gettingrid of sin, penance.

    3. Listening itself.

The ultimate test of whether we are listening to God is thefruits in our life!

Happiness always looks small if you hold it in your hands, but when you learn to share it youwill realize how big and precious it is.

When we learned thatDumaguete will host the31st BCBP National An-niversary, we were ex-cited and decided wewere going with the chil-dren. And so we regis-tered as early as Novem-ber last year.

On the week of theanniversary, we wereready. We already hadour tickets. The kids hadstarted packing theirthings, excitedly lookingforward to the weekend.

Wednesday that week, while having breakfastwith Jun my sister textedme informing the deathof my aunt, my mothers

sister. She too is mybaptism and wedding

Ninang. She had been verysick even before my

mother died and I prom-ised that I will be in Ka-patagan should she die.

To keep that promise, Itook the boat that eveningfor Ozamis. I also had withme my return trip ticket toCebu the following eve-ning.

I arrived Cebu May 6 inthe morning feeling verytired but excited to go toDumaguete in the after-noon via Oceanjet. When Ireached home my 2nd girl,Monica, told me their com-pany doctor advised herfor hospital confinementdue to Pneumonia.

I felt so confused. So werushed to see another

doctor for a secondopinion. I too had myself

checked for I had coughand was feeling ill. PraiseGod Monica did nothave to be admitted. We were given lots ofmedicine to buy and totake.

After lunch I felt coldand had fever. It wasthen that I called Juncancelling my trip to

Dumaguete. I could notrisk travelling alone withfever. And so I acceptedthe fact that I could notbe with Jun and thechildren.

Why can't priests hear confessions through electronic media such as telephone,e-mail, or Internet?

Confession on the telephone or by e-mail is not permitted by the Church for a couple of reasons.

First, the sacrament of confession is a personal encounterwith Jesus in which he personally ad-dresses every sinner: "My son, your sins are forgiven." He is the physician tending each one of thesick who need him to cure them. He raises them up and reintegrates them into fraternal commun-ion. Personal confession is thus the form most expressive of reconciliation with God and with the

Church. (CCC 1484)Second, maintaining secrecy is essential. The "Church declares that every priest who hears con-

fessions is bound under very severe penalties to keep absolute secrecy regarding the sins that hispenitents have confessed to him" (CCC 1467). E-mail, the Internet, and telephones are never com-pletely private.

The Pontifical Council on Social Communications on The Church and Internetsays:

Virtual reality is no substitute for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the sacramental real-ity of the other sacraments, and shared worship in a flesh-and-blood human community. There areno sacraments on the Internet; and even the religious experiences possible there by the grace ofGod are insufficient apart from real-world interaction with other persons of faith.
