Teach FirsT and Your schoolWorking in partnership to address educational disadvantage

Message from...

Brett WigdortzFounder and CEO, Teach First

Partnerships with schools are integral to the achievement of our mission to address educational disadvantage. Our work with colleagues in schools across the country to date has made an impact on the lives of thousands of children and young people. We’re delighted to invite more schools to join our network to further that impact.

Every member of our movement is committed to raising the achievement, access to opportunity and aspirations of all pupils. Teach First Participants and Ambassadors (alumni) are making a difference every day to the lives of the children they work with. As the charity expands, so does our opportunity to form partnerships with more schools across the country.

Take a look through this booklet to find out how your school and pupils can benefit from working with Teach First, both in the short and long term. You can read about the advantages of placing participants in your school. Participants are committed to making an immediate difference, and have a impact on their pupils. You can also find out how you can engage with our growing network of ambassadors, who are dedicated to achieving long-term systemic change in education. You can recruit governors and experienced teachers through our network, and engage with our range of ambassador-led initiatives for the benefit of your pupils.

I hope that you will take advantage of the wide range of ways in which we can work together. We look forward to strengthening our relationships with current partners, and welcoming new schools to our network. Together we can make significant steps towards ensuring all children achieve at the highest level.

John dunfordChair of Whole Education and Teach First Trustee

The key to the success of Teach First has been its strong partnership with schools. When it started, Teach First soon acquired a reputation with schools for providing high quality, intelligent, enthusiastic teachers. The gradual expansion of the Teach First model from London to other cities has now benefited many more schools across the country.

More than 50% of Teach First Participants stay in teaching beyond the two years of their initial commitment. Many of these talented people achieve rapid promotion in recognition of their work and potential. They are among the best prospects as senior school leaders of the future.

School leadership, however, is not just about the Senior Leadership Team. Good schools recognise that there is leadership at every level of the school. They give responsibility beyond their own classroom to good teachers, including Teach First Participants and Ambassadors.

I have been an enthusiastic supporter of Teach First since it started and, as a member its Board of Trustees, have been delighted to be in a position to share in steering its development. I strongly encourage senior school leaders to engage with Teach First and to make the most of its talented people.

Our missionTo address educational disadvantage by transforming exceptional graduates into effective, inspirational teachers and leaders in all fields.

“ Teach First is a highly effective third sector organisation backed by business and government which has shown what is possible. It recruits highly able graduates, who would not otherwise have considered teaching, to work in some of the country’s most challenging schools for at least two years. ”

The Importance of Teaching, The Schools White Paper 2010, Department For Education

About Teach Firstour partner schools We work with schools which face various challenging circumstances and prioritise primary and secondary schools which:

Have more than 50% of their pupils living in the •lowest 30% of areas of deprivation according to the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI). (Evidence shows that using the IDACI indicates deprivation in the school population more accurately than for example take up rates for free school meals.)

Have low attainment of five+ A*-C GCSEs amongst •its students. Teach First works in schools whose results fall below the lowest 30% of the national distribution.

Teach First also works in schools that have a •Challenge status: either National Challenge or City Challenge.

Measuring our impactIn 2010 a research report confirmed that Teach First is having a positive impact on schools in challenging circumstances.

The report – The impact of Teach First teachers in schools – was conducted by the University of Manchester and funded by the Goldman Sachs Foundation. It provided compelling evidence that Teach First Participants are effective classroom practitioners, and that their presence leads to positive pupil outcomes. This research also identified a positive relationship between the number of Teach First Participants in a school and pupil achievement at Key Stage 4. It showed that a greater number of participants led to significant improvements in school performance.

The research came as the final part of a three year project designed to measure and improve participant impact. As the first impartial and rigorous examination of its kind, the study has enabled Teach First to better understand its strengths and areas for development. This will help our participants and ambassadors work even more effectively to address educational disadvantage.

how can we work together?

Teach First’s Head teacher survey 2010 reported 95.4% satisfaction with the impact of participants in school.

addressing educational disadvantage Educational disadvantage remains one of the most destructive and pervasive problems in the UK. Studies show that socio-economic status still determines whether children fulfil their potential. Teach First exists to close achievement gaps and enable potential to be realised.

Who we areTeach First is an independent charity, founded in 2002, which works to improve the life chances of children from the most deprived backgrounds. In the short term, we do this by recruiting exceptional graduates to teach and lead in schools in challenging circumstances across the country. In the long term, we are creating a movement of leaders who are committed to influencing systemic change in education, from both inside and outside the classroom.

A new cohort of participants is recruited by Teach First each year to begin our Leadership Development Programme. Together they join our national movement, committed to addressing educational disadvantage.

What we do Teach First has already changed the lives of thousands of children and young people. We harness the enthusiasm of exceptional individuals to provide inspirational teaching and transformational leadership.

Teach First recruits graduates – known as participants – to undertake a two year Leadership Development Programme. Participants teach in a school in challenging circumstances for a minimum of two years and focus on developing as effective, inspirational classroom leaders. Every element of the programme is designed to enable participants to make a profound impact on the achievement, access and aspirations of their pupils; and to develop strong leadership skills to apply in the classroom and beyond.

expansion to Primary schools After working exclusively with secondary schools, Teach First launched a pilot to place graduates in primary schools across London in 2008. This has now led to the expansion of our primary provision across England.

ambassadors – a long term commitment to changeFollowing successful completion of the programme, participants become Teach First Ambassadors. Teach First Ambassadors are already playing a major role in positively impacting education, as school leaders and governors, through influencing policy, and much more.

Our intake is growing each year, and we aim to place over 730 participants in 2011 and over 1,000 by 2013. By 2020, we expect to have an Ambassador Community of over 9,000 and, within this, 100 head teachers of challenging schools, along with a further 500 as governors.

“ Four of the trainees seen during visits to schools were judged by inspectors to be amongst the most exceptional trainees produced by any teacher training route. ”

Teach First Ofsted Report 2008

“ My students are in the lowest percentiles for almost every socio-economic indicator there is. I know the impact Teach First applicants can have in raising aspirations. Energetic, innovative, enthusiastic, resilient and wonderfully committed to the students - what parent wouldn’t want their child taught by a teacher like that? What Head teacher wouldn’t want their school full of teachers like that? That’s why Teach First is so important to me and my students. ”

access to unrivalled development opportunities During their two year placement, participants have access to a range of opportunities to develop their classroom leadership, and their wider leadership skills. The Leadership Development Programme incorporates three strands:

Leading Learning - Participants focus on becoming effective teachers throughout their two years in school. This strand exists to support participants in the development of their classroom practice, and towards achievement of a PGCE. Participants attend tailored development sessions which enable them to meet the unique needs of a school in challenging circumstances.

Leading People - In order to maximise their impact in school, it is essential that participants work effectively with all stakeholders. Leading People exists to provide participants with access to activities that develop their skills as effective leaders of people.

Leading Organisations - Participants are dedicated to achieving change for the benefit of pupils. The Leading Organisations strand exists to provide participants with opportunities to explore how organisations - including schools- work, and how they can make an impact from any level.

Quality delivered in partnershipTeach First works in partnership to deliver a high quality Leadership Development Programme. In 2009 Teach First formed the National Initial Teacher Training Partnership (NITTP) with 13 universities across England. This facilitates provision of a high standard of ITT for participants. Our partners also include numerous professional development providers and businesses which support participants in the development of their classroom practice and leadership skills.

The Masters – Furthering teacher effectivenessBeginning in their second year, participants also have the opportunity to work towards a Masters qualification, delivered by The University of Manchester, The Institute of Education, or The University of Warwick, depending on their location. This qualification in Education, Leadership, or Educational Leadership, respectively, is specifically designed to further develop their abilities to be effective leaders in school.

commitment to continuous improvementTeach First is dedicated to continuously improving the Leadership Development Programme and values feedback from our school partners. Each school is therefore invited to be part of a regional Schools Advisory Group to ensure effective progress and evaluation of the programme across the region. Key staff within schools are also invited to participate in evaluation exercises to ensure the continuous improvement of Teach First provision.

For more information regarding placement, all Teach First contact details can be found at the end of this booklet.

Place participants in your schoolcommitment to making a differenceTeach First places participants in primary and secondary schools to provide excellent teaching for their pupils. They commit to a minimum of two years at their school where they focus on leading learning to raise the achievement, access to opportunity, and aspirations of their students.

The reality of educational disadvantage is at the heart of participants’ recruitment and placement, which brings a sense of urgency to their teaching approach. They seek to maximise their impact in their school, and overcome the challenges they face for the benefit of their pupils.

Participant development and support Participants work towards a PGCE throughout the first year, whilst undertaking around 90% of a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) timetable. In their second year, as NQTs, they further their impact in the classroom by setting visions and goals. These are designed to continue raising pupils’ achievement, access and aspirations, and ensure all children realise their potential. Participants reflect on their progress in executing their vision regularly and adapt their approach where needed to ensure success.

Tutors Participants are supported throughout their first year by tutors from one of our university Initial Teacher Training (ITT) providers as they work towards a PGCE and QTS. Tutors run subject days to develop participants’ subject knowledge, and also regularly visit participants in school to observe their lessons and support their development.

Mentors Participants are assigned mentors - members of teaching staff at their school - to support their development. Teach First supports the development of school mentors to ensure invaluable support to participants. This includes a pilot mentor development framework facilitated by our university partners to support mentors in their professional development.

Leadership Development Officers All participants are assigned a Teach First Leadership Development Officer (LDO) to support them. The LDO supports participants during their school placement in setting ambitious yet feasible visions for pupil success, as well as goals for pupil outcomes. LDOs are qualified teachers, and often Teach First Ambassadors.

Tailored training to meet your needs Before beginning teaching, all participants are required to complete a six-week Summer Institute. This intensive residential programme provides participants with core skills and knowledge that will support their teaching from September. The content delivered is specifically tailored to the context in which they will be teaching. Summer Institute unites participants as a cohort and instils a common sense of purpose and direction towards achieving our mission.

Recruitment & selection of participants

Teach First visits over 50 universities across the UK to find the right graduates to meet schools’ needs. We encourage ambitious, high achieving graduates to recognise that teaching in a school in challenging circumstances is a rewarding and socially beneficial career opportunity. Teach First receives thousands of applications from our target universities, and many others across the UK.

a rigorous selection processTeach First’s selection process is rigorous to ensure we hire the right people who can make the biggest impact in school. Taking into account their subject, skills and personal strengths, Regional Directors carefully select the right participant on behalf of the school.

The applicationCandidates must complete an online application form which covers academic history, positions of responsibility, the eight essential competencies, an academic reference and information to ensure equality of opportunity. The minimum requirements for applicants are BBB at A Level (300 UCAS points) excluding general studies and a 2:I degree classification. Each application is read by two assessors independently.

The assessment centreApplicants attend the Assessment Centre for a day, undergoing three assessments: a 30 minute one-to-one interview examining experience and core competencies, a group exercise to test team work and leadership potential, and a sample teaching lesson. Applicants are required to reflect on their performance throughout the assessment process. During the course of the day, applicants meet four assessors, including at least one qualified teacher and one Teach First Ambassador who has previously completed the Leadership Development Programme.

enrolment Those selected as participants must then complete the enrolment process, which involves a Subject Knowledge Audit and reference check. Once they have passed through the enrolment process, they are ready to be allocated to a region and matched with a school. Participants then undertake a one week school observation before commencing the Summer Institute.

“ The recruitment process is very impressive; Teach First does all the hard work for us. The criteria are specific to what we want – it shows that Teach First is listening to what schools want .”

Richard Yates Head teacher

West Drayton Primary School, London

our core competenciesApplicants must demonstrate a high proficiency in eight core competencies:

Humility, Respect and Empathy•Interaction•Leadership•Planning and Organising•Problem Solving•Resilience•Self Evaluation•Knowledge of Teach First and their academic subject•

Applicants are thoroughly tested against these qualities throughout the application and assessment process.

how can we work together?

“ More emphasis than in any other initial teacher training courses is given to the personal and intellectual qualities successful candidates are expected to demonstrate, with the result that these are particular strengths of the trainees. ”

Teach First Ofsted Report 2008

Ambassadors who continue to teach in schools in challenging circumstances get an unrivalled level of professional support and development through Teach On. The initiative equips ambassadors with the skills, knowledge, experience and networks they need to be transformational teachers and leaders in schools.

The skills and experience gained on the Leadership Development Programme means that ambassadors often progress quickly within their schools. Teach On is here to ensure that they are given the necessary development to be highly effective in their roles.

The number of ambassadors continuing to address our mission by teaching and leading in challenging schools is set to surpass 1,000 by 2012. This means that Teach On has the potential to have a profound impact on teaching and learning in the UK. We aim for all pupils in the expanding reach of Teach First Ambassadors to achieve, aspire and access opportunities independent of their socio-economic status - a challenging but achievable task.

What support is available to Teach on ambassadors? We offer an array of professional support and development at every stage of ambassadors’ leadership journeys. Opportunities include ambassador-driven teaching and leadership networks, access to expert speakers, an annual residential conference and website access to resources. We have close relationships with major training providers including Future Leaders, Teaching Leaders, National College and Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT).

The Teach on initiatives include:

Host or speak at a Teach On event

There is very little cost to schools for taking part in Ambassador Initiatives. Teach First has secured funding from our partnering organisations so that schools we work with can benefit from the opportunities availble through

this network. Many components of the Teach On offer are heavily subsidised, such as the annual Teach On Institute, or are free of charge.

Recruit ambassadors to your school

The Teach First Ambassador Community is a uniquely empowered network of Teach First Ambassadors working from all sectors to help achieve our mission. There are currently over 1,160 members and this number is expected to grow to over 9,000 by 2020.

Having successfully completed the Leadership Development Programme, ambassadors have a shared experience of raising the achievement, access and aspirations of children and young people. The two years instil a strong personal commitment to continue making an impact on education in the long term.

Year on year, over 50% of Teach First Ambassadors stay in the teaching profession, of which more than 250 are in either senior, middle or additional leadership roles. This group remains connected to Teach First through our Teach On initiative, which provides tailored support and development opportunities. Our ultimate goal is to develop a strong community of leaders, working in effective partnership with others, to measurably improve standards in education.

Teach First works with schools to establish where teaching and leadership vacancies exist which ambassadors could apply to fill. We encourage our schools to share current vacancies with us which can be advertised to ambassadors through our AmbassadorNet. Ambassadors can then apply for those positions and use their experience to make a real impact in school.

Teach First runs a number of initiatives which are specifically designed to address educational disadvantage in schools. These include: Teach On, Higher Education Access Programme for Schools (HEAPS) and Governance for Change which will be explored in the next few pages.

Governance for Change Recruit ambassador governors onto your governing body

Governance for Change supports ambassadors who want to have an impact on the success of our schools by becoming school governors. It enables schools to advertise their vacancies to ambassadors, and to recruit governors who are committed to supporting long term change.

Governance for Change raises the profile of the role of governors amongst ambassadors. It encourages them to use their leadership abilities to make an impact within the role, whether they are still in teaching or not.

Teach First works with the School Governors’ One-Stop Shop, a charity whose free service matches willing volunteers with governing board vacancies (www.sgoss.org.uk/teach-first).

Governance for Change provides a range of support for ambassadors to maximise their impact within governor roles:

Applications: We provide support and advice for ambassadors during the governor application process to help them highlight how they can use their skills to make a difference.

Vacancies: We provide access to existing governor vacancies identified through Teach First’s school partnerships.

Training and Support: In addition to training workshops, Teach First is expanding the practical support it offers to ambassador governors to ensure they can be effective in their roles. This continually evolving support will come in the form of online resources, mentoring and opportunities to shadow current governors.

Community: Ambassadors have opportunities to network with other ambassador governors, and governors from Teach First’s corporate supporters.

HEAPSHigher Education Access Programme for Schools

Providing support for your Gifted and Talented studentsThe Higher Education Access Programme for Schools (HEAPS) is a pioneering initiative designed to improve pupil progression from our partner schools to the country’s leading universities. Last year, HEAPS had an impact on the futures of over 4,000 young people across the country.

HEAPS is driven by our Ambassador Community through:

Sixth Form Mentoring Programme: This programme matches ambassadors with Gifted and Talented students from our partner schools to provide mentoring. Ambassadors are provided with resources to help their student make informed decisions about their future. HEAPS also provides university and library visits, online forums, interview skills and debating workshops, and a residential for students.

Teacher Training: HEAPS works with Dr Frank-Gemmill to offer bespoke support for ambassadors who have careers or UCAS responsibility in their school. HEAPS also facilitates production of a collaborative scheme of work with UCL aimed at improving the number of A*s in GCSE English. This is available to all teachers, and a similar resource in Science and Maths is being planned.

The Access Bus: This offers pupils in Year 8-11 the opportunity to attend workshops led by current undergraduates about Higher Education. The bus brings students from our partner universities to our schools to promote progression to Higher Education. The workshops are based on structured small group discussions and give pupils the opportunity to ask questions about their university experience.

Take part in Teach First events Contact us

Teach First runs a series of events throughout the year to raise the profile of our cause, and to provide participants and ambassadors with professional development. We invite our school partners to take part in our events and to offer participants, ambassadors, and our wider media and supporter audiences, invaluable insights into their experiences.

Take a look below to see how you can engage with our events and offer your support:

leadership PanelsThe Leadership Development Programme includes events to provide participants with insights into challenges which leaders from all organisations face. Head teachers and school professionals are invited to speak at these events to share their leadership challenges with participants. This offers participants a fantastic opportunity to hear from those in positions of school leadership and to learn from their experiences.

Leadership Panel events take place throughout the year and our partner schools are invited both to speak, and attend as audience members. These events fall into two categories: Challenges in Leadership and Cock Up Clubs.

Challenges in Leadership These panel events involve a panel of successful leaders from diverse sectors who explore a broad leadership theme. This will relate to challenges faced by leaders at all stages of their career development and will examine how leaders choose to respond to these challenges personally and professionally.

Cock Up Clubs These events focus on individual challenges that leaders have overcome that have informed their development as a successful leader. School partners are invited to share with participants the lessons they have learnt from the mistakes they have made, as teachers or school leaders.

Teach First WeekTeach First Week is an annual event during which distinguished professionals take time out from their day job to teach a lesson in our partner schools. The week is an opportunity for schools to raise students’ aspirations by giving them the opportunity to learn from high profile figures. This week also serves to raise the profile of our schools and to facilitate links with successful leaders from the worlds of business, entertainment, and politics. The guest teachers are supported by our participants throughout the event which also provides them with a further professional development opportunity.

Media opportunities Teach First seeks to support our mission by raising awareness of educational disadvantage, and the role we play in addressing this problem. We invite partner schools to work with us to raise this awareness, and to develop their own profiles whilst doing so. This can involve taking part in media interviews, school based filming and recording, and attendance at regional and national occasions such as awards, dinners and policy events.
