Designs of this kind areused in rangoli, embroidery and as walldecoration in Saurashtra,Gujarat and South India
Teacher’s Note : Talk to the children about their experiences related to snakesbefore starting with this narrative. This would make the lesson more interesting.
2. A Snake Charmer’s Story
I am Aryanath
I can do something special whichI am sure none of you can do!Do you know what? I can playthe been! You must be surprised.Yes, I can make snakes danceby playing the been. I have learntthis art from my familymembers. We people are knownas Kalbeliyas.
My grandfather Roshannathjiwas famous amongst our people. He could easily catch manypoisonous snakes. He tells memany stories about his past.Come, listen to his story in his ownwords–
16 Looking Around
Dadaji remembers
From the time of my grandfather and great grandfather, wehave always been saperas (snake-charmers). Snakes havebeen an important part of our life. We used to move fromvillage to village carrying our snakes in bamboo baskets.
Whenever we stopped in a village, acrowd would gather around us. Wewould then take out our snakes fromour baskets.
Even after the show, people wouldstay on. They knew that in our tinboxthere were many types of medicinesfor them. We made these medicinesfrom plants collected from the forests.I had learnt all this from mygrandfather. I felt nice that I couldhelp people with my medicines evenif doctors and hospitals were far off.In return, people would give us somemoney or foodgrains. In this way wecould manage our life.
Sometimes, I was called to placeswhere someone had been bitten by a snake. From the marksof the bite I tried to find out which snake had bitten the person.I would then give a medicine for that. But I have not alwaysbeen on time to help. As you know, some snake bites caneven cause death on the spot. But most of the snakes arenot poisonous.
Sometimes, when some farmers would come running forhelp shouting “snake, snake”, I would catch that snake.
16 Looking Around
A Snake Charmer’s Story 17
After all, catching snakes was something I had been doingsince my childhood.
Oh, those were the good days. We could help a lot of peoplein many ways. We also entertained them. It was not like todaywhen everyone watches TV for entertainment.
When I grew older, my father taught me how to remove theirpoisonous teeth (fangs). He also taught me how to close thetube of poison in the snake’s mouth.
Teacher’s Note : If possible, explain about poisonous fangs, ducts and theirremoval by showing visual aids.
Think and tell
Have you ever seen anyone playing a been? Where?
Have you ever seen a snake? Where?
Were you scared by it? Why?
Do you think all snakes are poisonous?
In chapter 1 you read that snakes do not have earswhich you can see. Can the snake hear the been ordoes it dance when the been moves? What do you think?
What can we do
Aryanath! your father used to travel with me ever since he wasa young child. He learnt to play the been without being taught.
These days it is diffcult. Now the government has made alaw that no one can catch wild animals and keep them. Somepeople kill the animals and sell their skins at high prices. Sothey made a law against this. Now, with this law, how will weearn our livelihood? We people have never killed snakes, andsold their skin. People say that we keep the snakes in bad

conditions. If we wanted, we too could have earned a lot ofmoney by killing snakes. But we would never do that. Snakesare our treasure, that we pass on from one generation toanother. We even gift snakes to our daughters when they getmarried. In our Kalbelia dance we also have movements similar
to the dance of the snake.Aryanath, you will have tomake a different life foryourself. You have got yourfather’s gift of playing thebeen. You and yourcousins can form a beenparty and entertain people.
But do not waste thisknowledge about snakesyou have got from yourelders.
Share your knowledgeabout snakes with childrenwho live in
towns and cities. Tell them, that they shouldnot be scared of snakes. Help them to recognisepoisonous snakes.
Tell them how snakes are friends of thefarmers. They eat the rats in the fields, otherwiserats would eat the crops.
Now you tell our story. Also make a new storyof your life, to tell your grandchildren.

Teacher’s Note : This narrative focuses on the relationship and interdependencebetween snake-charmers and snakes. By talking about more such communitiesit can be clarified that most of them do not treat animals badly (which is a commonperception).
A Snake Charmer’s Story 19

Have you ever seen animals being used for entertainmentof people? (For example, in a circus, on the road, or in apark)
– When and where did you see this?
– Which animal show did you see?
How did people behave with the animals in the show?
Was anyone teasing the animals? How?
What kind of questions came to your mind after seeingthat animal show?
Imagine that you are an animal in a cage. Think how youwould feel. Complete the following sentences :
 I am afraid when
 I wish I
 I am sad when
 If I had a chance I would
I do not like it at all when
20 Looking Around
Write
Like snake-charmers, which other people depend onanimals for their livelihood?
Survey–People who keep animals
Talk to some people in your neighbourhood who keep oneor more animals for their livelihood–for example, a horse fora tonga, hens for eggs, etc.
 Name the animal they keep?
 How many animals are there?
Is there a separate place for the animals?
Do you know?Of the many kinds of snakes found in our country, only four types of snakes are poisonous. They are:Cobra, Common Krait, Russel’s Viper (Duboiya),Saw-scaled Viper (Afai).A snake has two hollow teeth (fangs). When it bites, the poison enters the person's body through thefangs. There is a medicine for snake bites. The medicine is made from the snake's poison andis available in all government hospitals.Cobra
Krait
Duboiya
Afai
A Snake Charmer’s Story 21
 Who looks after them?
 What do the animals eat?
Do the animals ever fall ill? What does the keeper do then?
Make some more questions and discuss.
Make a report on your project and read it out in the class.
What we have learnt
The government has made a law that no one cancatch and keep snakes. What do you think aboutthis law? Give reasons for your answer and write inyour own words.
Make a snake puppet
Take an old pair of socks.
 Put one on your arm.
Stick buttons or bindis forthe eyes.
Cut out a long red strip ofpaper for using as the tongueand stick it in the place asshown.
On the other side of the papermake a ‘V’ shaped cut.
 Your snake is ready!
Now you can playwith this puppet!
Snake charmers are people who make
the snakes dance by playing the been.
Snake charmers are known as kalbeliyas.
They carry their snakes in bamboo
baskets
Snake charmers used to make medicines
from the plants collected from the forests.
When people gather around the snake
charmers to see the snake dance, they
used to collect herbal medicines from
snake charmes.
Snakes have been an important part of
snake charmer’s life.
Snake charmers used to move from
village to village carrying snakes in
bamboo baskets.
During olden days there were no other
means of entertainment. People used to
gather around to see the snake dance,
whenever snake charmers used to visit
their vilage.
Goverment has made a law that no one
can catch wild animals and keep them.
Some people kill the animals and sell
their skins at high prices.
To avoid this and to protect wild animals
Government has made this law.
There are different kinds of snakes found
in nature.
Some snakes live in water and some live
on land.
All the snakes are not poisonous.
There are four types of poisonous snakes
found in India.
Snakes have two hollow teeth called
fangs
Snake charmers remove the poisonous
teeth of snakes.
After taking the poison they close the
tube of poison in the snake’s mouth.
When a snake bites a person, poison
enters his body through fangs.
From the mark of the snake bite snake
charmers can find out which snake had
bitten that person.
There is a medicine for snake bites. The
medicine is made from snake’s poison
and is available in all government
hospitals.
Rats would destroy the crops by eating
them.
Snakes eat up the rats in the fields.
This way snakes help the farmers by
eating the rats in the fields.
Therefore snakes are called as farmer’s
friends.
Forests and wild animals are the wealth of our country
It hlps in maintaining the environmental balance.
We should protect forests and wild animals.Government has taken the following steps
to protect our wild life. Wild life santuaries and national parks
have been set up.Hunting and poaching is made illegal.
