TECHNOTE REGISTERED AS A DIRECTED SPRAY FOR RESIDUAL WEED CONTROL IN COTTON Australian cotton growers have a convenient new option for residual weed control in cotton. Nufarm’s Rifle ® 440 is now registered for use as a directed spray for residual weed control of many grass and broadleaf weeds in cotton. Nufarm has developed this registration over several seasons. 14 trials and demonstrations in both irrigated and dry land cotton fields ensure both the crop safety and efficacy of this new and unique use pattern. As a result, Rifle 440 is the only pendimethalin product registered for this use in cotton. It can also be used pre-emergent or as a band spray in cotton (ideal for mixing with Convoy DF), on irrigation banks, channels and drains. It can also be used pre-emergent for chickpeas, mungbeans, sunflowers and many other crops. HOW DOES RIFLE 440 WORK? Rifle 440 is a short residual herbicide which disrupts cell division and elongation and is absorbed by emerging shoots and roots. Susceptible weeds die before or soon after emergence. The effectiveness of Rifle 440 is improved by rainfall or irrigation within 10 days of application to move it down into the top 3 - 4cm of soil, where it will be present in moist soil at the time of weed germination. If soil is too dry, efficacy may be reduced. EFFICACY The addition of weedmaster DST (or another registered glyphosate product) to Rifle 440 may be required if weeds are present at application. No antagonism of the knockdown activity of weedmaster DST is observed where robust rates (1.5 - 2.2 L/ha) are used when tank mixing with Rifle 440. This tank mix can provide excellent knockdown and residual control of a range of weeds. In trial and demonstration work Rifle 440 applications exhibited high levels of residual control of awnless barnyard grass. An average reduction of 97% in emergence of awnless barnyard grass was seen across six trials (Graph 1) and in a further three demonstration trials, complete control of any new germinations of awnless barnyard grass was achieved with a tank mix of weedmaster DST and Rifle 440 (Graph 2).

RESISTANCE MANAGEMENTRifle 440 is an emulsifiable concentrate containing 440g/L of the residual herbicide pendimethalin. A Group D herbicide, Rifle 440 is ideal for use as part of an Integrated Weed Management (IWM) strategy. Some basic methods to manage resistance include:

• Always use the full label rate

• Rotating herbicide modes of action or use multiple modes of action

• Integrating other non-chemical methods of weed control into the crop management program
