the population of the sub-region had been increasing steadily in recent years and in mid-2008 had reached over 660,000, making up about one quarter of that of the north east region. the catchment area population of the sub-region, however, is significantly higher, with up to one million people within thirty minutes drive time from its main centres and 2.7 million within an hour.

the road network is uncongested, with tees Valley well connected to the main arterial road network of the uK. the A1 (M) and the A19 run north south through the region and the A66 runs east west. We have the fastest flowing traffic in the country, something which enables average commuting times of just 22 minutes.

Darlington’s railway station is part of the main east coast rail network and provides rapid connections southwards to london and northwards to Glasgow and edinburgh in a little over two hours.

Durham tees Valley Airport offers flights to a wide variety of major destinations across the uK and europe including Amsterdam and Aberdeen.

tees & Hartlepool ports (teesport) is the third largest port in the uK and is leading the way in improving supply chains through portcentric logistics. the gateway to the north of england, teesport is a key driver in the region’s economy.

Hard work is part of our make-up, it’s ingrained in everything we do. this tradition and heritage provides an important foundation for the teaching and training of the new skills and qualifications that make tees Valley one of the most fertile places for developing talent. tees Valley is home to more than 29,000 students studying at both teesside and the expanding stockton campus of Durham university.

teesside university is widely regarded as one of the best new universities in the country, excelling in the particular disciplines that make it so invaluable to the local economy, especially its links with the engineering, process and energy sectors.

in 2009, the university won the university of the Year and outstanding employer engagement initiative in the times Higher education awards. More than £120 million has been invested in recent years on a friendly town centre campus, with building work well under way on a new £17 million showpiece dental education and sports therapy complex. other new developments include the £12 million Phoenix Building and £10 million Athena Building. the new facilities enhance teesside’s reputation as a leading university for digital innovation, computing, design, media and health.

teesside university has secured the second largest grant in the country for a workforce development initiative between academia and business. it will receive up to £13 million including a £5.2 million injection from the Higher education Funding Council for england.

the university delivers specialist courses such as the FdA transport and logistics in partnership with Middlesbrough College, following consultation with the sector skills Council for logistics to provide a nationally recognised sector-specific qualification.

A new one stop shop for information and guidance on skills development and training for the logistics sector was launched in tees Valley in 2009. the logistics Academy north east – based at Middlesbrough College and teesside university – was established by the sector skills council, skills for logistics, to promote training in the freight logistics industry (see more in the contacts section).

Teesside University is ranked number

one in UK for mechanical engineering

Around a million and a half people of working age can be found within 30 miles of Tees Valley. Whilst the local workforce is undoubtedly hardworking (putting in more overtime than any other part of the uK) and very loyal (one of the lowest turnover rates in the country), it’s the skills that keep companies coming to the area.

Ports and Maritime

PD Ports owns and operates the Ports of tees and Hartlepool (known as teesport), a major deep sea complex at the heart of the industrial tees Valley. the port is the uK’s third largest port by tonnage and covers an area of 400 hectares of land along the southern bank of the River tees and Hartlepool. At its heart is tees Dock, a deep-water facility located on the mouth of the River tees. teesport handles over 6,000 ships a year and is strongly associated with petrochemicals, manufacturing containers and engineering. the estate is rail-connected and close to the A66 trans-Pennine route, and to other major trunk roads. Facilities include two container terminals and ‘roll-on roll off’ facilities. Few ports boast such a prime position for taking advantage of the ever increasing opportunities in european and scandinavian trades, the emerging markets of eastern europe and the ever changing patterns of deep sea container transhipment.

PD Ports is a leading uK ports business offering end to end supply chain solutions.

the approved £300 million deep sea container terminal on the south bank of the River tees, will be known as the northern Gateway Container terminal (nGCt).

the northern Gateway will reduce inland uK transport distances and costs for containers being delivered to scotland, the Midlands and the north and reduce the adverse environmental impact of increasing container traffic. it will create an estimated 500 new dock-related jobs and in addition, indirect posts within the ports, logistics and shipping sectors, estimated at up to 5,000 new jobs - of which in the last three years we have seen some 1,200 new jobs created in tees Valley as a result of increased container volumes at the port through portcentric operations. this includes long-term investment from tesco and AsDA who have both estimated import centres at teesport to serve their northern uK markets

portcentric is the new buzzword at Teesport. it is an initiative to centralise the distribution activities of importers and supply chain specialists within Teesport, to take advantage of all the benefits of being located in a thriving commercial port.

David Robinson, group chief executive officer of PD Ports, said: “teesport is a major uK portcentric logistics hub. our concept of portcentric logistics is gathering further momentum as uK supply chains seek further efficiency gains and are pressed to becoming greener.”

A container taken to Manchester from teesport would save 121 lorry miles if compared with a container taken from Felixstowe; and 106 lorry miles compared to a container taken from southampton. For cargo heading to Glasgow, every container driven from teesport would save 229 lorry miles when compared to the same container driven from Felixstowe.

tesco are one of the major companies already taking advantage of this. the supermarket giant moved to tees Valley in 2009, opening a 1m sq ft distribution centre at teesport. this will service their scottish, northern and Midlands operations. Following the success at teesport with portcentric logisticss, PD Ports is developing a business support service to assist the sMe market in addressing their portcentric logistics requirements in the teesport Hinterland.overland road and rail distances

Working with PD Ports’ logical link shipping service, which launched in early 2009. logical link is a coastal feeder container shipping service offering a next day connection between Felixstowe and teesport. in its first year of operation, the logical link service has reached its goal of reducing operational costs for customers and minimising the adverse impact that road transport has on the environment.

AsDA, which opened the first portcentric import centre at teesport in 2006, has considerably reduced the volume of trucks on the already over-burdened uK road network. this has led to a marked reduction in its overall supply chain costs and a significant cut in Co2 emissions of some 2,200 tonnes. By locating an import centre at teesport to serve its northern based stores and consumers, AsDA has significantly reduced its movements of trucks on uK roads, which have been carrying goods purchased in the Far east, brought by sea to a southern uK port and then on to the north by roads.

More and more shipping lines are discovering the benefits of including teesport in their schedules and there is strong interest from a number of other lines as the portcentric logistics concept gathers momentum. Already CMA-CGM, K line, Maersk and MsC have started feeder services to tees Dock in response to the opening of the AsDA distribution centre.

services include:

regular direct services to northern european ports including Aarhus, Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Gdansk, Gdynia, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Helsinki, le Havre, leixoes, lisbon, Rotterdam, st. Petersburg and Zeebrugge.

direct services to eastern Mediterranean ports of iraklion, istanbul, izmir, Piraeus, salerno and Volos. African and Gulf services to Aden, Djibouti and Port sudan and an Atlantic service to the Great lakes, usA.

uK services to Felixstowe, Grangemouth, immingham and tilbury.

feeder services to europe.

A major expansion of pD container handling facilities at Teesport is helping the port to become the uK’s next container hub.

Major operators Vopak and simon storage offer clients extensive storage and handling solutions in Tees Valley.

Vopak has 168 tanks and three vessel berths offering a capacity of 287,000 cubic metres for Bitumen, Chemicals, liquefied Gas, Petroleum products and Vegetable oils. Both companies operate considerable tank storage facilities which are fully integrated with the adjacent petrochemical complexes at Billingham and Wilton. Customers are connected by a series of pipelines which transfer cargo from quayside storage to customers located on both sides of the river.

the company offers comprehensive terminal and facility management services for bulk liquids at two wholly-owned sites on the River tees. sites at seal sands and Riverside have a combined capacity of approximately 280,000 cubic metres and provides storage for 60-70 chemical and petrochemical products for both uK based and international companies.

in 2009, simon storage announced a new long term contract to store and handle the full range of road fuels at its seal sands terminal for Petroplus Marketing. simon is providing a fully integrated solution that includes 40,000m3 of carbon steel tankage, fully automated road loading facilities, integrated bioethanol in-line injection systems and batch biodiesel

blending systems. simon’s seal sands terminal has the capacity to handle up to 600,000 tonnes of road fuel products a year for Petroplus, and is already assessing further expansion plans.

simon storage is a leading european independent bulk liquid and gas logistics service provider with nine storage terminals in the uK, Germany and ireland.

Renault imports 80,000 cars and vans through teesport each year from its main distribution centre in le Harve.

shipping is provided by Flotta suardiaz with about three vessel calls a week at teesport, each carrying up to 1,500 vehicles. the company also sends cars by rail to Bathgate in scotland. At tees Dock, vehicles are processed and prepared for final delivery to the dealer. the teesport facility covers about 23 hectares (56 acres) with space for up to 9,000 vehicles on a fully paved storage area.

there are six freight-only sailings per week to Zeebrugge and three to Rotterdam. this means that products can be on shelves within 24 hours of leaving a factory in the uK or the Continent.

the combination of easy access for ro-ro vessels and ample landside storage

make teesport a key location for the importation of new vehicles. tees Dock has three ro-ro ramps ideal for handling vehicle imports. Renault cars and vans are handled at tees Dock by CAt uK services.

teesport has expanded its ro-ro facilities in recent years to match the growth in ferry services provided by P&o Ferries.

in early 2010, KlM announced that it would introduce freight on inbound flights to Durham tees Valley Airport. KlM’s twice-daily cargo service will operate on a six-month trial basis on two of its three daily feeder services to schipol.

Andrew Galloway, KlM cargo account manager for the north of england, said the service - which will accept individual parcels of up to 70kg - was likely to appeal to businesses dealing in high value items with limited life and time-sensitive deliveries “We are looking for niche markets,” he said. “in the tees Valley area you have the petro chemical industries, but on the Humber we are even looking at fisheries. if you want to get salmon to dining tables in new York, you want to get it there before it goes off.”

Tees Valley’s rail freight facilities, both eWs and Freightliner, operate modern rolling stock, providing connections to all parts of the uK and europe via the channel Tunnel.it is one of the exceptions to the massive reductions of freight on the rail network. eWs is the prime mover of heavy freight in tees Valley and partner PD Ports operating their tees Yard rail hub, which has links to the north West and elsewhere. eWs operates regular container services using teesport as a hub for its intermodal maritime movements and this is likely to increase with the development of the nGCt. Freightliner operates its own rail freight terminal close to teesport and provides trunk rail services between key ports and inland rail freight interchanges within the uK including a daily direct service to the deep sea port of Felixstowe.
