We are delighted to support the patient-focused care it delivers every day. Our gift reflects our commitment to seeing the new patient care centre become a reality—and we hope it will inspire others to step forward.”

Bill and Phyllis Waters

Dr. William (Bill) and Phyllis Waters have made significant philanthropic gifts to education, health and community, including a personal gift of $3M to

our campaign. However, in addition to his personal gift, the challenge gift Bill Waters made to our hospital inspired a whole community of giving. The Waters’ Challenge offered the opportunity for every gift to the hospital to be matched dollarfordollarupto$2Mallowingeachandeverydonortoamplifytheirdonation and take pride in the greater impact of their gift on health care in their own community.

Myron and Berna are true philanthropists, focusing on helping those that would not be able to accomplish things on their own — removing barriers to allow individuals and organizations to soar. We are so very grateful for their investment and for their friendship and belief in our hospital.

Carswell Family Foundation

Helen and Allan Carswell have a history with our hospital that goes back over 60 years, from when Helen was a TEGH nursing student being courted

by Allan. Allan’s career soared, culminating in his leading the NASA Phoenix MissiontoMarsin2007,butheandHelenneverforgottheirrootsinthiscommunity. Jain Family

The Jain family gave us a gift in recognition of the life-saving surgery that Dr. Carmine Simone

provided to Arun and Madhu’s son, Ajay. Grateful patients often look at ways to say thank you to our medical, nursing or support staff for the care or support they received during their stay. The Jain family were so grateful for the care, they wanted to provide a gift that demonstrated the magnitude of happiness they felt to ensure that care like Ajay received is available to others in need.

Volunteer Services to the Toronto East General Hospital

Volunteer Services to Toronto East General Hospital has been the most steadfast and

significant hospital supporter, starting with the early days of Physicians’ Wives Association. Today, the volunteers - from teens to seniors - dedicate more than 50,000 hours to our patients each year. To date, the Volunteers have contributed over $5Mtoourhospital;theycommitted$1MtothisCampaign alone - and exceeded their target. We are profoundly grateful.

Michael MacMillan and Cathy Spoel

The Honourable Bill Graham and Mrs. Catherine Graham generously committed $500,000 to our hospital. Bill has been a tremendous advocate

and ambassador for our hospital and when he stepped forward to Champion the Campaign we knew he would help us achieve greatness. We are truly grateful for his time and leadership and for the tremendous gifts that he and Catherine have contributed to this community.

The Hon. Bill and Mrs. Catherine Graham

Douglas and Adrianne Mahaffy are neighbours and friends as well as generous philanthropic leaders to our hospital. Inspired by the care and services the

hospital provides, Doug and Adrianne decided to support our hospital with a gift of $500,000 towards respiratory care at Toronto East General. We are grateful for their ongoing support and commitment and look forward to the opening of the unit in the new Patient Care Centre.

Adrienne and Douglas Mahaffy

Michael MacMillan and Cathy Spoel have been long-time supporters of our hospital. Michael grew up just up the street at the top of Coxwell and has

remained connected and supportive over the past decades. Michael contributed his incredible enthusiasm and generous support to ensure a successful campaign. Michael assisted in the development of a greater profile for our hospital, always focusing on the delivery of equitable health care in a community that welcomed the world at its doorstep. We are truly grateful for his leadership and for the generous support he and Cathy continue to provide.

William and Meredith Saunderson

Bill and Meredith Saunderson demonstrated their commitment to our hospital with a leadership gift to the new Child and Teen Clinic. This family-friendly

clinic where Bill and Meredith’s daughter, a TEGH paediatrician, sees many of her patients, is adorned with bright colour and bubbles, which provides a calm and nurturing environment for our young families. We appreciate all the Saunderson family does in support of our hospital.

Page 15: Tegh foundation campaign report 2015

The Slaight Family Foundation

Gary Slaight has contributed to our hospital in many ways from the early days where he would help with event promotion to the Slaight Family

Foundation’s most recent generous investment of $500,000 in our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. The Slaight Family Foundation Short Stay Inpatient Unit provides acute mental health services for children and teens in crisis. Gary’s support of this program has a true impact on healthy outcomes for children and teens and we thank him for his investment in our hospital.

Eric Tripp and Maria Smith

Steve and Sally Stavro Family Foundation

Toronto East General and the Stavro family are synonymous; the Stavro family invested in our hospital decades ago. Steve and Sally and the family lived

for many years at the top of Coxwell Avenue. In addition, they had businesses in our catchment area; in fact Steve’s first butcher shop was at Coxwell and Queen.Steve’seldestdaughter,Connie,joinedourBoardin1997andhelpedto raise tremendous profile and capacity for our Foundation and today her daughter, Christina, is carrying on the Stavro Family legacy. Over the years the Stavro family has invested well over a million dollars towards the Stavro Emergency Department and raised millions through gala events and sports activities. We are overwhelmed and moved by their ongoing support and dedication to this hospital and to the east Toronto community we serve.

Eric Tripp and Maria Smith have made our hospital a big part of their lives. Eric has been a member of the Hospital Board for more than six years

and has served as Chair for the past two. Investing in the community is what they do and we are so very fortunate that they have chosen to invest their time, energy and generous support in our hospital. Their gift of $500,000 towards the redevelopment campaign, combined with the leadership and direction Eric has provided through his role as Chair, will have a transformational impact on the future direction of our hospital. We are exceedingly grateful for their thoughtful investment of time, talent and treasure.

Kevin and Mandi Kimsa

A resident of our community, a former board member, a visionary and friend of the hospital, Kevin Kimsa has dedicated tremendous energy into

guiding the future of Toronto East General. In addition to his commitment of leadership and enthusiasm, Kevin and Mandi, have contributed over $250,000towardsthehospital,inparticulartotheStavroEmergencyDepartment, which holds a special significance for Kevin. We thank you Kevin and Mandi for your continued support, dedication and friendship.

Sydney R. and Yvonne McMorran

Bill MacKinnon

Bill MacKinnon has served on the Foundation Board, led the Hospital Board for three years and was Vice Chair of the Campaign Cabinet,

which successfully completed our $60M capital redevelopment campaign. Bill became one of the most valued ambassadors and advocates for this institution and has helped to bring our hospital into focus for corporate and philanthropic Toronto. The direction he provided and the investment he inspired will forever change the future of our hospital. For this and for your tremendous generosity, we thank you Bill.

Bud McMorran was the driving force behind our hospital’s growth in the early years. As former Vice Chair of TD Bank, Bud led the first significant

Campaign at our hospital. Bud’s guidance and governance experience helped to set the ground work for the growth and development of the Foundation and inspired tremendous investment and support from both the local and downtown corporate communities. Bud and Yvonne have continued to support our hospital over the past two decades and we are exceedingly grateful for their ongoing, leadership support and friendship.

Larry and Judy Phillips

L arry Phillips, best known to many as one of the East York Old Boys, burst onto the scene with energy, drive and a posse of “Rum Runners” who have

adopted the hospital as their own. Through his leadership as Foundation Chair, as the inspiration for the EYOB’s golf tournament and the transformation of our Golf Classic, Larry elevated our profile, professionalism and fundraising capabilities at every turn. Larry and Judy have made supporting the hospital a family affair and we are truly grateful for their ongoing support, friendship and dedication.

Mark and Sarah Wellings

Glenn Allan Stonehouse and Family

Glenn Stonehouse demonstrated early on the impact donor support can have at our hospital, when he established the Stonehouse Cardiac Care

Service with a dramatic renovation to the unit. The colours, space redesign, new flooring and lighting transformed the unit into a state-of-the-art cardiac centre. Glenn, a grateful patient of cardiologist Dr. Bentley-Taylor, wanted to give back for the life-saving care he received and he continues to be a generous donor and avid supporter of our Golf Classic tournament. We are truly grateful for your ongoing support Glenn.

Mark, a former Director of the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation Board, embraced his role as ambassador and advocate. At his GMP offices,

Mark hosted numerous impressive “Lunch and Learns” to profile our hospital and introduce us to the downtown corporate community. It was through Mark, that TEGH was first able to gain greater recognition and attention in the broader Toronto community. With a family connection to TEGH through his late father, Mark understood the quality and compassionate care the hospital provided to this community. Mark and Sarah generously donated to the hospital campaign and remain loyal supporters and dear friends.

Bequests Played an Important Role

“I truly believe that real charity is planting a tree whose shade you know you will never sit in.”- MR. GARETH SELTZER Bequest Donor TEGH Foundation Board Member

Dorothy Cobb was a long-time supporter of Toronto East General Hospital. A former beloved staff member and volunteer, Dorothy was a warm and caring person who

devoted much of her life to our hospital. When her husband, Dyke, became ill and passed away, the TEGH family rallied around Dorothy, providing outstanding care for him and tremendous support for her. Dorothy and Dyke did everything they could to ensure that the future of our hospital would remain bright and made the decision to create a lasting legacy to TEGH through a gift in Dorothy’s Will.

Wendy Hunter was not just a donor to our hospital; she was a part of its very fabric. A graduate of the Toronto East General Hospital School of Nursing, Wendy later went on to

become a teacher for our nursing students when the program was transferred to the community college program. In her later years at the hospital, Wendy assumed the role of President of TEGH’s School of Nursing Alumnae and built strong engagement from the generations of nursing graduates whom she taught and inspired for many years. Wendy is missed by her TEGH family but remembered through her generous legacy.

Harry Compton exemplified the best of what east Toronto has to offer – friendly, hard-working, financially prudent and community minded. He lived most of his

adult life quietly with his wife as a long-term resident of the Parkview Hills area of our neighbourhood. Several decades ago when his wife became ill, Toronto East General Hospital was there for her delivering compassionate care until the end. When Harry later fell ill himself, our hospital was there for him too, providing lifesaving surgery. Harry’s decision to make this monumental bequest will truly make an impact on the future of health care for the community.

Page 21: Tegh foundation campaign report 2015

Gray Steele was a leader and advocate for our hospital for more than four decades. Respected and loved, Gray served on both the hospital and foundation boards; Gray

was Toronto East General Hospital. He embodied the spirit and sense of community that established the hospital’s growth and allowed it to flourish. His philanthropy and leadership inspired long-standing directors like Gord Swayze, Walter Jones, Bud McMorran and Tim Marlatt; friends like Margaret Chambers, Cathy Steele and the Harris Family; as well as his grandson, Andrew Steele, currently a director on the hospital board. Gray and his wife, Betty, continued their legacy of support with a generous contribution from their estate to our hospital. We are proud to have known them and call them friends.

Jenny Houghton was someone who left an impression on everyone she met. When Jenny first discovered she had cancer, she chose to celebrate life with her friends and family.

She held an annual summer party to celebrate and raise funds to purchase much-needed equipment for our oncology department. Through her estate, Jenny designated further funds to the oncology clinic. Her bequest was used to establish a beautiful and comforting oncology waiting room, a unique place where friends and family of patients can support their loved ones. The room is adorned with a spectacular work of art referred to as “Jenny’s Garden”, created with love by friend and artist, Jeremy Bortz. Each ceramic floral tile has a message from a friend of a loved one. Jenny’s legacy is one of celebration and comfort.

Margaret Chambers was a friend to our hospital, an ambassador, and so much more. A long-time Beach resident, Margaret had a passion for life, for her community for her

hospital and of course bridge. Margaret delivered the Beach Metro News door to door well intoher80sandremainedontheNorthAmericanBridgeNetworkuntilmonthsbeforeher death. Through her dedication to numerous charities, Margaret was an inspiring role model for all. Always understated, Margaret was well-regarded and highly-respected for her leadership and adored by her friends and family. If you were fortunate enough to be counted among her friends, you were truly blessed. Margaret gave generously during her lifetime and always directed her funds to urgent needs. Her gift to the hospital from her estate will continue her legacy of generous support.

According to Volunteer Services President, Betty Hicks, “Our volunteers are there with smiles on their faces. Dr. Simone saved my voice, he saved my life, with his lung cancer surgical expertise. Within two months, I was back in the studio, singing and recording! I am forever grateful to the hospital and Dr. Simone for my life and for making it possible for me to fulfil my dream to sing for the world.

TEGH serves as a provincial Centre of Excellence in Thoracic Surgery (surgery of the lung, chest, and esophagus) and performs all lung cancer and thoracic surgery for Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, North York General and Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. Inspiring a Community to giveThe Waters’ $2 Million Challenge

When Dr. William (Bill) Waters talked to Toronto East General Hospital about making a contribution, he was not looking for recognition or fanfare. Instead, the TEGH Director and University of Toronto Professor Emeritus simply wanted to help others help their community.

“I want them to be recognized for taking the initiative to make a difference,” said Bill. “I wanted this gift to help someone that wanted to honour a loved one, or thank a doctor for the care they received to be able to make even more of an impact with their donation.”

Through the Waters’ Matching Gift Challenge all gifts to Toronto East General Hospital were matched dollar-for-dollar.Ineffect,$2millionin donationsfromthecommunitybecame$4millionthrough the Waters’ Challenge Fund.

“The important thing for donors to remember is that generosity comes in all sizes. Individuals need to know, that whatever they can contribute makes an impact at a hospital like Toronto East General,” said Linda Henry, Vice President of TEGH Foundation.

Many of the Challenge Fund gifts supported the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) program. Inspired by this Challenge, MIS is a key initiative for TEGH. The surgeon views images of the interior of the body on high-resolution video monitors and performs the surgery with narrow-gauge surgical instruments inserted through small incisions. The advantages to the patient are numerous.

“There is no doubt that MIS is the direction of surgical care,” says Dr. Robert Zeldin, Medical Director, General Surgery. “The technology has advanced so rapidly that surgeons are able to perform almost every operation required today using minimally invasive surgical techniques.

The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a magnificent bronze plaque, portraying the faces of Sally and her late husband, Steve Stavro, in recognition of the continuing family legacy of support for Toronto East General Hospital.

More than twenty years ago, Steve Stavro had a vision to create an outstanding emergency care facility to serve the east Toronto community where he had his roots.
