Welcome to the first issue of

Rocky‟s Report! Here at Temple University

we have a very special little mascot — a

stuffed red panda named Rocky, and in his

name we bring you the latest

news about Temple Univer-

sity Circle K. Circle K is a

global organization con-

nected with groups like Key

Club at the high school level

and Kiwanis at the adult

level, as well as many other

branches for all ages. The

mission statement for Circle

K International is to “develop university

students into a global network of responsi-

ble citizens and leaders with a lifelong

commitment to service.” This isn‟t your

ordinary community service club. Circle K is

part of a grand family of some of the

county‟s most dedicated volunteers. At

Temple, we are part of the Pennsylvania

Liberty District which allows us to network

with many of the colleges in Philadelphia

and its surrounding areas. We hold weekly

meetings for club members to

discuss the many events that

we do. We work with organi-

zations like Philabundance and

Books through Bars, among

many other local service or-

ganizations. I personally want

to welcome you to into the

Circle K family here at

Temple University and ensure

you that this year will be full of some of

the most unique opportunities to make a

difference.

Yours in friendship and service, Mariza Esperanza

Temple University Circle K Editor

FreshServe took place on the Sun-

day during Temple‟s Welcome Week. Our

president, Lauren Gess co-lead a group of

about thirty students of all years to clear

a lot at the corner of Jefferson and 26th

street. Sarah Gierhart and Grace Oey were

there to give Lauren a little Circle K sup-

port. Other participants included a dance

troupe, RA's from 1940, and many new

Temple Owls. Together we cut and pulled

weeds, tore down crawling vines, picked up

garbage and took some lovely photos which

are now on Temple Circle K's face-

book. However, the Temple students were-

n‟t alone because there was a little extra

help from some neighbors. Mack, a North

Philadelphia resident helped us the entire

time. He warned us about poisonous plants,

cut down the tree branches and organized

work flow, all the while dressed in a bike

suit because he did not have time to

change; that‟s dedication! We had boat-

loads of fun, so come out next year and

join us!!

community service is very important. There are a lot of people and organizations that need

people like us to help out and work hard for a good cause.

What interests you about Circle K?: We are a very diverse group of Temple students

that come together frequently to serve

others. We have so much fun doing service

projects together and have created a

'family' over the past few years.

What do you like most about Circle K?:

I like Circle K because it is exactly about

the 3 Tenants : Leadership, Fellowship,

Service. There are many opportunities to

become a leader, whether it is becoming an

officer or chair, or running a service event.

Every meeting allows for fellowship be-

tween other students interested in service.

District events bring PA Circle K clubs to-

gether-- so there are opportunities to

meet Circle K members from other schools

throughout PA. We do a TON of commu-

nity service through weekly events and

larger weekend service projects.

around on my own.

What interests you about Circle K?:

Our mascot Rocky!

What do you like most about Circle

K?: We volunteer at marathons before

the sun comes up, watch energetic five

year-olds dance better than we ever

will, bake cookies for Ronald McDonald

House while occasionally munching on a

few, and sell late-night grilled cheese

sandwiches to party-goers. What's not

to love?

What do you

like most about

Circle K?: I like

Circle K because

it's given me the

special experi-

ences like

DCON, where I

get to spend a

friends I've

made at past

DCONs. One of my best memories is

driving for 8 hours to DCON in Erie.

Everyone always complains about this

one, but I really like road trips and

I got to meet some great people that

I never would have had the chance

really close on the bus

ride and it definitely

made us so much

closer!

What made you join

Circle K?: I joined Circle

K after 4 years of serving

with the William Tennent

making a huge difference!

What interests you most about Circle

K?: It's a great blend of service, leader-

ship, and fellowship, which means that we

serve together, we have so many chances

Sarah Gierhart, actually. Not only did she

recruit me but she nominated me to fill the

position of editor, and look where I ended

up!

What interests you about Circle K?:

There is such a variety of projects that it

is almost impossible to not find a service

event that you like. Circle K basically

keeps you busy having fun with your

friends and helping other people; it‟s per-

fect! There are so many opportunities to

travel around the district and see a lot of

things that you would otherwise miss out

on. It truly is a special organization.

yet! There's something special about

a person who bypasses all the other

organizations and devote themselves

to this one - you know it when you see

it!

What do you like most about Circle

K?: Circle K is unlike any other or-

ganization in that it emphasizes all

the things that makes helping others

so great. Of course there's the ser-

vice component and all the learning

that goes along with it, but there are

also the leadership skills that we

build and the friends that we make.

You can't go to a Circle K meeting,

project, or event without seeing all of

these aspects so perfectly inter-

twined!

JOB DESCRIPTION: As the Pennsyl-

vania District Governor, I am the

Chief Executive Officer for the

Pennsylvania District.

What made you join Circle K?:Some

time ago when I was in high school I

stumbled upon an organization called

Key Club because my history teacher

promised extra credit to the stu-

dents that joined the group he ad-

vised. Not knowing anything about

the Kiwanis Family and caring little to

nothing about community service, Key

Club opened my eyes to the impor-

tance of caring for others. I knew I

wasn't done when I got to college, so

I built a Circle K at my old school

USP. When I transferred to Temple,

I joined here, too!

What interests you about Circle K?:

I think it's amazing that you can al-

ways pick out a Circle K'er in the

crowd, even if they haven't joined

and I am not just saying that!

What interests you about Circle K?:

I really like seeing the impact that a

few hours of volunteering each week

can have on the community! We really

have made some great connections

with different organizations through-

out the Philadelphia area!

What do you like most about Circle

K?: What other organization gives

you the chance to be in Erie one

weekend, Harrisburg on a Wednesday

morning, and then be back in Philly

that night for a Kiwanis meeting?!

there too, as well as an army of UPS

trucks. The empty trucks would soon

be filled with loads of running gear

that the marathon participants

checked-in before the start of the

race. Two volunteers and a driver

“It‟s „refreshing‟ waking up at

4:30 in the morning,” said Amelia

Hock, a junior, as she met up with

other Circle K members on the morn-

ing of the of the ING Half-Marathon.

On Septemer 19, a dozen volunteers

from Temple University‟s Circle K

made their way to the Philadelphia

Museum of Art to volunteer their

services at this annual Philadelphia

event. After donning our bright or-

ange t-shirts, we worked in the pre-

dawn chill to set up the gear-check in

for the runners. There were other

community service organizations

worked together to ensure that no

runner‟s possessions were misplaced.

After organizing the bags in

preparation for the runner‟s return ,

we had a quick bite and raided ING of

their free orange giveaways.

Throughout the day, many of the run-

ners and their family members

thanked us for our time and service.

Junior classman, Jodi-Ann Lewis pro-

claimed, “You get so inspired seeing

people of different ages running the

marathon.” Overall, it was another

Saturday well-spent with Circle K!
