District Conventions is that special time of year when Circle K clubs
from across Pennsylvania come together to celebrate the past year of
community service and select new leaders and officers for the new
one. DCON 2011: The Wonderful World of Service marks the 49th
annual convention for the Pennsylvania district. Temple Circle K will
participate in various workshops and caucuses, and also enjoy a Disney
themed costume contest, a Governor’s Ball, and an excellent opportu-
nity to see the sights of beautiful Pittsburgh, PA. We are happy to
announce the following nominations for the district board:
Audra Kelly for District Governor
and
Mariza Esperanza for Liberty Division Lieutenant Governor
Please wish Temple University Circle K a safe and successful weekend
and stay tuned for more details about DCON!
As many of you know,
the District Service Project
for the 2010-2011 service
year was Promoting Overall
Wellness (POW). Over the
past year, TU Circle K has
helped promote aspects of
fitness, nutrition, global
health, and overall wellness
by performing service pro-
jects that support this
cause.
This month’s district
convention will announce a
new District Service Project
in hopes of bringing atten-
tion to a new cause. Look out
for the next issue of Rocky’s
Report to see which DSP was
chosen!

WEEKLY PROJECTS:
Career Wardrobe and
Philabundance
WCU Volleyball Tourna-
ment
Goalball
Every Wednesday, Temple
Circle K volunteers at the Career
Wardrobe on Spring Gar-
den Street. The Career
Wardrobe is a non-profit
organization that sells
donated clothing to
women transitioning into
the workforce. The shop
is run by a very small
staff and many volun-
teers, so it is a labor of
love for all those involved.
When Temple Circle K
visits for their volunteer-
ing hours, members spend
their time tagging clothes, dressing
mannequins, sorting through donations,
and anything else that needs to get
done. It’s a lot of fun arranging
through all of the clothes and working
with the staff to make the boutique
look as professional as possible. If
you get finished working early, the
staff lets you look around and buy
some of the fashionable clothes the
store has to offer. It’s a really great
and rewarding experience for all
Temple Circle K members!

SPOTLIGHT: Weekly Service Projects
Philabundance
Nothing to do on a Tuesday
evening? Why not volunteer at
Philabundance with Temple Circle K?
Every other Tuesday, members of
Temple University Circle K make the
short drive to South Philly to volun-
teer at this fantastic food back.
Philabundance is a local organization
that assists with food distribution
around the Delaware Valley. Their central
belief, that no man, woman, or child
should go hungry, is attained in various
ways: soup kitchens, food pantries, shel-
ters, etc.
On one particular Tuesday, we
created boxes of food that would be sent
to senior citizens. Everyone had different
tasks that ranged from smashing boxes
and building boxes, to placing food and
well wisher cards inside the packages.
There were many other volunteers there,
in addition to the Circle K’ers, and with
everyone's help, optimism, and dedication,
803 boxes of food were stuffed full of
nutritious items, like orange juice, pasta,
fruits, vegetables, greeting cards, and
colorful paper flowers. The most
exciting part of the night was that
we were able to reach and surpass
the normal goal for a three hour
shift, 800 boxes, in only two hours!
Overall, we had a fun and extremely
productive night at Phiabundance,
and even got some free t-shirts
thrown in!

The WCU Volleyball Tournament was definitely an experience!
Between the teams, the snacks, and the music, there was no shortage
of fun. Although we had two teams and played our hearts out, we did-
n't manage to make it on. Regardless, we had an absolutely great time
in West Chester and got to see tons of Circle K'ers from around the
area! After the games were over, we got to check out the town and
get a delicious dinner. Hopefully next year we'll advance to the next
round, but I know that we'll have a great time regardless!

West Chester University Volleyball Tournament
Last Saturday, Silese and I
got up early and drove to the Over-
brook School for the Blind to help
with their activity hour. When we
arrived, we met two other Temple
volunteers and the organizer Sandy
(or Mr. Sandy, as he’s called by the
adorable kids we were about to meet).
The activity hour is designed for
blind or sight-impaired children to
come and play various games. Before
the kids got there, Mr. Sandy let the
volunteers play tee ball with a special
softball that beeps. Of course, he
made us close our
eyes to see if we
could hit and then
find the ball. This
was the first game
we would be playing.
When the children
arrived, a base that
buzzed was set up
and we were given
eye masks to make
sure that we could-
n’t peek. As the kids
took turns hitting
the ball, the four of
us would listen
closely and try to find the ball, some-
times having to crawl on the floor to
get our hands on it. It was slightly
embarrassing but a lot of fun!
After playing a couple rounds
of softball, we moved
on to basketball.
Though the gym was
equipped with hoops
that would buzz, we
just stood in a circle
and bounced the ball
around. Before bounc-
ing, the recipient of
the pass would have to
clap his or her hands to
tell the passer of the
ball were he or she
was. I was
impressed with how accurate
the kids were. Then we
played soccer, kicking the
ball around the circle in much
the same way. After that,
we started to play goalball.
Goalball is a competi-
tive game tailored to the
blind and sight-impaired.
With three people each, the
teams face one another, each
with a set of goals behind
them. One team rolls a ball,
which is filled with bells, to-
wards the other team, some-
times at speeds up to 50mph! The
other team’s job is to guard their goal
and stop the ball before it hits the
nets behind them. This is a sport
played all over the world. In fact,
one player from the
Overbrook School is eligi-
ble to play at an advanced
level in Turkey! On our
way out, a couple of older
players gave us a demon-
stration of how the game
is really played. Since we
were playing with chil-
dren, our game was much
less intense. The volun-
teers lined up on one end
of the gym, while the chil-
dren lined up at the other
end. They would roll the ball to us
and we would try to stop it while
wearing eye-masks. We didn’t keep
score, but I’m pretty sure the kids
beat us big time!
This was definitely a great
service project. My favorite part was
working with the kids. Three children
came with their parents, all between
the ages of seven and ten, and they
were funny, bubbly, and extremely
enthusiastic to play with us. Mr.
Sandy holds activity hours like this
every couple weeks. It was great to
be there and I’m excited to go back
next time!
