Messages from Principal

At Wideview we share a deep appreciation of our supportive and understanding community. With so many changes happening in our daily lives due to the pandemic, the school too has had to adapt to ensure the health and wellbeing of the students, staff and the broader community. I would like you to know that the support that you have provided the school has allowed for initiatives to be implemented – which has resulted in an outstanding example of what great things can be achieved when schools work hand in hand with their communities.

Drop Off and Pick Up

Another area of community appreciation and pride is the response to our new drop off and pick up organisation. The Temporary Kiss and Drop zone on Wideview Road should be utilised whenever possible as this is a really safe and efficient way to drop off and collect your children. The zone is manned by staff at all times before and after school. Hornsby Shire Council has advised us that the bus zone outside the school can no longer be used to Drop Off and Pick Up Students. Parents are reminded that they are to use the designated drop off zones only. They are not to leave their vehicle unattended or stop for longer than 5 minutes. Stopping on or near crossings or in No Stopping Zones will remain prohibited and will result in a large fine. Remember to talk to your children about what your afternoon pickup arrangements are each day.

The options are:

1. Kiss and Drop 2. Parent pick up 3. Walk or ride home 4. Bus, and/or After school care

Opportunity Class Applications

Opportunity classes located in government primary schools cater for academically gifted Year 5 and Year 6 students with high potential. These classes help students to learn by grouping them with students of simi-lar ability, using specialised teaching methods and educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents normally apply when students are in Year 4. Students who are placed then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. Wideview students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with an opportunity class. If your child is in Year 4 and you wish to apply for Year 5 entry into an

opportunity class in 2021, you must apply online at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5. Applications open on Tuesday 9 June and close at 5pm on Fri-day 26 June 2020. All parents must apply before this deadline and the school cannot apply on your behalf.

COVID-19 Operational Updates

Our current procedures at school around the COVID-19 guidelines remain in place this week. These include:

Staggered pick-up times for students. Please continue to use the parent waiting areas if you are picking up your child.

Phoning or emailing the school if you need to make contact with a staff member or office.

Social distancing for adults. Students in the school do not need to social distance.

Activities that involve external providers (especially non-educational) or require travel remain cancelled.

Hand washing and regular cleaning of high frequency touch points remain in place.

Why is it important for students to get to school on time?

To be part of the morning greeting.

To know what’s happening during the school day.

To start lessons on time and to understand what to do in class.

Reinforce the importance of punctuality. Students who arrive at school on time are generally more settled and ready to learn.

It’s also very important for parents to be at school on time to pick up their child/ren. It can be very upsetting

for a child if their parent is late. Students are to report immediately to the school office where parents will

be contacted.

Regards,

Mr McTernan

The Wideview Way – “Pride, Respect and Responsibility”

As you will be aware we have a reward system in the school that operates across

all grades in the school. The PBEL (Positive Behaviour Engages Learning) Program

focuses on rewarding the children for demonstrating a range of positive aspects in

the school citizenship. This may be inside or outside the classroom. We have high

expectations of students at Wideview. We want the children to display pride in

themselves, show respect to each other and be responsible school citizens.

As the children receive “Blueys”, they paste them into the PBEL Book. As they

accumulate the Blueys they are given certificates. There are certificates for receiving 10, 20 and 40 Blueys.

At 60 Blueys they will receive a ribbon and at 80 Blueys they will receive a special badge which they can then

wear on their uniform each day.

This program has been operating in the school since 2012. We believe that this program has a significant im-

pact on the students and their development as positive and independent citizens.

Returning Library Books

Our students are thrilled to be back enjoying the library again with many excited children queueing up to

borrow books for the first time in many weeks. The long break from school also means we have a large num-

ber of books that are very overdue. If you can please help your child search high and low for library books it

would be a great help to all the students waiting to borrow them.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Reconciliation Week & NAIDOC Week

National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week are times for all Aus-

tralians to learn about and celebrate our shared histories, ‘cultures, and

achievements. Thank you for these members of 6H for this beautiful In-

digenous inspired painting that is displayed in the Office Foyer.

WOW Work!

Well done to Emma in 6H. She has produced an excellent science report and

diagram on the Yellow Spotted Lizard from year 6’s novel study, ‘Holes’.

Year 6 News from the Easter Raffle

We are very excited to announce that the Easter Raffle raised $1885! Thank you so much to the Wideview

Community for their support. We were not sure just how well the raffle would go given that ticket sales

were being done on-line. Year 6 are currently planning and designing a new playground area for the senior

kids to ‘hang’ in, so the funds will be going towards this exciting project.

Writing Competition

Our school will be holding a writing competition for aspiring authors in Years 1 to 6.

Students will submit an imaginative piece of writing using a photo stimulus for inspiration. A panel of

teachers will select a winner and a runner-up from each stage to have their writing published in our school

newsletter. The winners from each stage will have their writing entered into the state competition on behalf

of the school for the opportunity to become a published author. Outstanding entries will be published in the

NESA publication 'The Best of WriteOn 2020'.

2020 ICAS International Competitions and Assessment for Schools

Students in Years 2 to 6 are invited to participate in the ‘International Competitions and Assessment for Schools’ (ICAS), run by the University of New South Wales. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Every student will receive a certificate and an online result report. Top performers will be eligible for medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence publicly recognised. The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take on the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision. ICAS Assessments are now online to allow greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results. Each ICAS assessment will be conducted on a separate day in the computer lab, beginning at 8am (before school starts) and will be supervised by Mrs McNally. Assessment  School Years  Sitting Date

P&C Update

Next P&C Meeting will be Monday 15th June via zoom. 7pm.

Please email [email protected] for zoom details.

Canteen

The canteen has reopened again for orders only. Recess orders are now available too. Please order via

Munch Monitor. Michelle has been working hard with our suppliers to ensure we have stock as needed.

Birthday buckets are back on again. These can be ordered via MM and are a great way to celebrate your

child’s birthday with their class when outside food can’t be brought into school for other children. Please

contact the canteen for more information on these.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will still be by appointment only and we encourage parents to order via Munch Monitor

where possible. Please follow the Facebook page to stay up to date. Unfortunately, due to systems

constraints, we cannot contact people directly about orders (MM doesn’t allow for contact details to be

shared with us) so if you have a query about an order please email the Uniform Shop or send them a PM

via Facebook. As you can imagine we have had lots of orders and lots of queries and are responding as

quickly as we can.

We need to say a big thank you to Flor Muse for her fantastic work in the uniform shop. We wish her well in

her new full-time role.

Welcome to Lynette Porter who has taken over the Uniform Shop Coordinator role. Please be patient as

Lynette gets up to speed.

We have had issues with some suppliers obtaining stock with COVID19, however we have some dates in

regard to back orders. Tunics are due on the 18th June and polar fleeces due 24th June. As soon as the orders

come in, we will work to have them delivered to classrooms as quickly as possible.

We have changed suppliers for the polar fleece. The new fleece feels nicer and warmer and the zipper looks

a much better quality to the old one. There is also a zip on the pocket.

Volunteers are always great in the uniform shop. If you have some spare time, particularly on a Friday

morning, we’d love some help. Please email or contact us via the fb page.

Thank you
