PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to Week 6, we certainly have a very busy term already. On Tuesday our student leaders attended the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community annual Student Leadership Conference at Magenta Club. This was an opportunity for our students to work with students from other schools in the development of leadership skills and knowledge and experience the future of education, including workshops for a range of inspiring presenters. A big thank you to our sponsors, The Entrance Lions Club, MSP Photography, and Ms Dawson and Ms Martinez for their hard work on the executive committee. Congratulations to our amazing athletes who represented The Entrance Public School last Friday with distinction. All our students gave their best efforts and can be proud if their achievements. Thank you to Mrs Ambrose, Mrs Tolman and Mr Littlewood for ensuring our team was well prepared. It was great to see so many parents cheering for all of our students. Each year the Department of Education, along with the Central Coast Council of Parents and Citizens’ Associations, the Central Coast Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, the Central Coast Secondary Principals’ Council and the Central Coast Primary Principals’ Association hold a public ceremony to recognise and thank the many members of our school communities who support us, our students and parents. This year The Entrance Public School would like to recognise and thank Mrs Haslam and Mrs McBride for their outstanding contributions to our school community and their ongoing support. Congratulations to Stage 1 on their outstanding behaviour as school representatives on the Taronga Zoo excursion to Sydney, all of our students had a wonderful time. Thank you to our fantastic staff for all their hard work organising the wonderful educational experience and thank you to our parent helpers. Flu season is here! Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection:

• Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone.

• Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

• Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness. The seasonal influenza vaccine, which protects against the pandemic influenza strain as well as two other influenza strains, is now available free to eligible people. More information about the vaccine is available from the NSW Health Immunisation Unit's vaccination page.

Have a great fortnight.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT How much fun was the BOOK CHARACTER PARADE! A

very big thank you to the wonderful Mrs Evans for her organisation and enthusiasm and of course Mrs Bayfield – always helping us all. I had such a lovely time as a giant TINKERBELL flitting about. Another TEPS first for me was the FAIR! What a brilliant day! Luckily no-one was blown away on the day. Many thanks to Mrs B and all the staff who came to make the Fair such a success. Mrs Bayfield works so very hard for our school to make sure our students have resources and experiences better than any school in the entire country!

As usual, I have been so lucky to see so many smiling, happy faces in my office and around the school. Kaitlyn and Jade made me pictures and a speech, I visited 6S and 5M to join in their Friday Maths Madness – clever mathematical thinking going on up there!! And I never get tired of wandering around our playground and seeing our students play and say hello.

A focus of ours in the playground is rubbish. We are so very close to the lake and the beach that it takes very little time for our litter to get straight into the waterways, killing our fish and sealife and polluting our beautiful coast. Please encourage your children to do the same when you are out and about – maybe pack a spare bag to pick up rubbish and take it home to place in your bin. Don’t forget to wash your hands and only pick up rubbish you can see is safe. A link to watch : http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s4301070.htm

Have a great fortnight everyone! Hope to see you at our Friday assembly. Nicole Heazlewood Deputy Principal

Our school is participating in the Smart Art Challenge. The challenge, which is being organized by Ability Links NSW, aims to promote the value of inclusion, diversity, social justice and schools as a supportive environment. Why? Nearly one in three Australian households is home to

someone living with a disability – 85% of those disabilities are invisible, such as mental health issues, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, ADD, MS, sight and vision impairments … we all have a role to play in ensuring our communities are welcoming and inclusive – including YOU!!

Swim School

Swim school will be occurring in Term 4. All final payments will be required to be paid at the office by Friday 13

K-6 B NEWS

Over the next few weeks, students will be learning about healthy food. Sending your child to school each day with a nutritious lunch and a healthy range of

snacks, will benefit his/her behaviour, motivation, focus and ability to learn. It will also encourage the development of healthy lifestyle habits, which are important for wellbeing into adulthood. Often parents pack a healthy lunch, but also include a range of sugary or fatty snacks, such as museli or cereal bars, chips and lollies. Children then choose to eat these snacks instead of the healthier lunch option. Please keep pre-packaged snacks to a minimum and consider healthier options such as yoghurt, vegetable sticks, dips, rice crackers, fruit, plain popcorn etc. Look out on our Facebook page over the next few weeks for more ideas for healthy lunch and snack options. STEM DAY

What a fantastic day! The enthusiasm, team work and problem solving skills the children displayed were impressive. A big thank you for the effort the Stage 2 teachers put into our STEM Day, planning, resourcing, preparing and delivering the variety of engaging learning activities for our students to experience.

NAPLAN RESULTS

Were released last week, these Literacy and Numeracy assessments were administered to our Year 3 students in May and show an achievement scale for each child. The Year 3 school average, national average a range of achievement for all Year 3 students are represented on these results. Overall these assessments provide a snapshot of your child’s achievements in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy and provide our school with future teaching and learning focus areas. Collectively Year 3 have made very pleasing achievements and we are proud of your efforts. Well done everyone! 3 WAY CONFERENCES

STAGE 3 NEWS

This term is absolutely flying!

Congratulations to our superstar, Cameron S! Cameron was the overall winner of the Public Speaking Competition. We also extend our congratulations to Matilda G, Scarlett S and Amien D who, along with Cameron, will receive scholarships from the Lion’s Club. We are so proud

of you all.

Leadership

On Tuesday, our school leaders attended the TLLC Leadership conference at Magenta Shores. Students had a great time listening to keynote speakers and participating in different workshops designed to enhance their skills in leadership. What an awesome experience!

Fruit Break

The morning session is the longest learning session of the day. Stage 3 are encouraged to have a brain break by refuelling with a piece of fruit/veg and water. It’s interesting to see the variety of fruit/veg our kids bring in! From persimmons, custard apples, tangelos, capsicums and beans to the humble pink lady apple.

Let’s Stay Organised!

It is so much easier to stay focused, engaged and on task when you’re organised. This could be as simple as ensuring you have the right tools for school! Pens, pencils, rulers, scissors and glue sticks are a necessity! Please ensure your child is equipped with these tools for learning. It would also be beneficial to equip children with their own headphones/earphones.

Year 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS Lions Club Sensory Garden Excursion

On Monday 7th August, our awesome TEPS Environment team participated in a walking excursion to the Lions Club Sensory Garden site at North Entrance. We were assisted by the fabulous Lions Club gardeners, and helped in the maintenance of the gardens. We shovelled and wheelbarrowed red mulch to refresh the ‘river beds’ and TEPS garden bed, and we planted lots of native Pigface in the newly established TEPS Garden section. If you haven’t yet visited the Sensory Garden, it’s well worth the wander. It’s a beautiful little spot, and you can check out our very own TEPS garden!! Our Environment Representatives did a wonderful job, and we had lots of comments from the community during our trek up and back, about how great we looked in our special Hi-Vis vests and how well our students conducted themselves at all times. Well done, everyone!! Pallet Garden Project

On Wednesday 16th August, our Environment Team, assisted by KQ, 3K, 3W and 4B, did an amazing job to get our Pallet Garden Project started. Kathy and Nat from Bunnings came to school and worked with our students. Despite the windy weather, our team of gardeners worked hard on clearing the site of debris and rubble, filling the garden beds with soil, and planting and watering lots and lots of young vegetables and herbs. We cleaned up the entire garden section, all the way down to our thriving Bush Tucker Garden. Thank you Bunnings, for donating all the paint, soil and

plants for our garden so far (lots of lettuce, kale and assorted herbs), and thank you to The Men’s Shed for making and

delivering our fabulous new pallet garden beds! Also, we’d like to thank Tom from Tumbi/Mobile Tyres & More for donating and delivering old tyres that we’ll be using

as garden beds for our new pallet garden. We’re really looking forward to seeing our garden area take shape over the rest of the term. There’s lots of work to be done, but our enthusiastic TEPS gardeners are super keen to get it happening!! All students who are interested in helping out and participating are welcome to join us. We’ll be working in the garden on a weekly basis (even week Mondays, odd week Tuesdays), during lunch play time. Schools Tree Day

As part of our participation in Schools Tree Day, we planted a range of native trees and shrubs along the fence line in our Pallet Garden site. Thank you to Planet Ark and Brian Hilton Toyota for your generous donation.

Thank you, Ms Wilson On behalf TEPS Environment Team

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION GulangFest 2017

In Week 4, our Koori Choir, Garawa Pre-Schoolers and some of our K-6 Aboriginal students performed at this year’s GulangFest. It was a great concert and Art Exhibition to celebrate Aboriginal Culture here in the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community. Our Koori Choir sang beautifully with a number of students representing our School. Thank you to Mrs Canobie and Mrs Hindson for your dedication to the TEPS Koori Choir. The Pre-Schoolers performed ‘G’day, G’day’ by Slim Dusty and they were very brave singing in front of such a huge audience. Our Pre-Schoolers also won an Award for their competition entry into this year’s GulangFest Art Exhibition! Thank you to Erin and Suzie for such terrific work teaching the Pre-schoolers! Our K-6 Aboriginal students played didgeridoos, clap sticks and danced to ‘The Children Came back’ by Briggs. We had a huge number of students performing and it was lovely to see the older students proudly teaching and leading the younger ones. Thank you to Miss Saunders, Mrs Haslam, Mrs George and the lovely parents for all your help on the night! Congratulations also go to Kayley V, Jack M and Eleanor W who received AECG awards and Caleb Phelps was the recipient of the Stan Ralph Memorial Scholarship. We had a deadly time celebrating Aboriginal Culture at GulangFest 2017!
